They definitely play up the gobby British rock arseholes thing as part of their 'act', but the point of their music hasn't reached me yet either

Main guy nearly had a heart attack tripping on mushrooms and cracked out that night, i'm honestly surprised they're still alive and able to make a record at all.

Main guy returns as out and proud rock arsehole Johnny Rocket in the forthcoming Moonlandingz LP, itself a spin-off of The Eccentronic Research Council's excellent album last year. I'm sure you're all on tenterhooks

Rock band takes copious amounts of drugs shocker.

Rewards for backers include a special massage from any member of the group, dinner for two with the fat white family, drum lessons and a "Primal scream workshop" with Lias Soudi.

dinner for two with the fat white family

lack of capitalization indicates this is a trick

I’m not sure whether he’s Hitler and I’m Goebbels, or he’s Goebbels and I’m Hitler… I’m definitely Tina Turner.

banfred bann (wins), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 18:01 (seven years ago) link

I'm assuming the special massage was to take place in Nevada to cover all legal bases.

¶ (DJP), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 18:02 (seven years ago) link

I don't really care about their substance abuse problems or their hilarious gobshite antics, I'm not a music journalist, the thing for me is the music and the swagger or lack of swagger

bandcamp's list isn't done but (probably due to obvious self-imposed limitation, at least in the top reaches) is quite good: https://daily.bandcamp.com/2016/12/06/the-best-albums-of-2016-80-61/

i love bandcamp so much of late, so much of my listening comes directly from there. am kind of surprised how much of the stuff on their list i already knew about/loved that i _didn't_ get to through bandcamp, though!

having said that:

"The thing about dark magic is that it really isn’t something to trifle with, not something you can achieve with a couple of crystals from Urban Outfitters, a Stevie Nicks album, a leather corset, a smudge stick and a change to your Twitter handle."

this is false and i have the photos to prove it.

whats up with quietus's #1 Årabrot - The Gospel? track 3 almost sounds like 90s alternative grunge metal

just another (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 19:31 (seven years ago) link

Arabrot is a headscratch record... feels like a contrarian statement to have that one on 1 but hey the rest of the list is good and at last I see an indie-focused list without that painfully average Car Head Seatrest album.

Moka, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 19:41 (seven years ago) link

<3 Doran and the gang but this happened with Grumbling Fur a few years ago and appears to be based largely on friendship with the band in question. Which is probably fine, these bands often require a boost, although I've not liked either record myself.

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 19:45 (seven years ago) link

That Grumbling Fur album was great though.

Many xps

I couldn't get in to that Bees album. Think someone on the Spiritualized thread said something along the lines of it being the best thing Jason Pierce had been involved in and whilst it was nice enough, it was nothing that I particularly wanted to listen to repeatedly.

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 21:25 (seven years ago) link

I liked Black Star (the track) as much as anyone, but it was released in November 2015. Seems odd to put it at #1 this year when any other track from the LP was available.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 21:36 (seven years ago) link

that is a horrendous list tbh

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 21:38 (seven years ago) link

cool that they like oranssi pazuzu though

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 21:41 (seven years ago) link

Recall last year the (arguably) best list was Cosmopolitan, (not arguably) worst was Radio X, will see if that holds up this year.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 21:41 (seven years ago) link

That treblezind might be the most uninspired list of best songs I've seen so far. They should've added a one song restriction per artist.

is there anybody outside, like, this board who has heard of more than 25 of those artists? not trying to be sarcastic here, i'm a little sheltered and maybe there are parties you can go to where people will say "Oh yeah, 'Boy' by Boyboy, I love that one!" without lying through their teeth.

for the record i listened to "boy" by boyboy and i did actually like it a lot, but i'll be fucked if i'm going to listen to 99 more bands playing at the walpurgisnacht rock festival in the illuminatus! trilogy.
