never understood whiney's long running personal beef with the quietus

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 16:47 (seven years ago) link

this appears to have nothing to do with The Quietus and everything to do with assuming no one outside of ILX has ever heard of King

Um anyway

The USA Today list is shockingly emo-crew friendly.

The USA Today list is shockingly emo-crew friendly.

rosenstock deserved to be no. 1 on at least one list

Is there a link for the USA Today?

Kinda surprised how underrepresented the year's big prestige emo albums are on a lot of these lists. But that may just be a reflection of the fact that 2016 was a strong year for a lot of music

I'm excited that he's getting so much exposure but also I am concerned about his bound-to-rise anxiety levels lol xp

Why the fuck are the Fat White Family on any of these lists? They're awful. I played with them once and as soon as they got there they asked the promoter where to score crack and then bounced w/o a soundcheck. Their music was horrible.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 17:20 (seven years ago) link

That sounds kind of like the essence of 2016 to me.

¶ (DJP), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 17:22 (seven years ago) link

fat white family are indeed terrible

Fat White Family
Fat White Family are an English rock band, formed 2011 in Peckham, South London.

Quick facts: Fat White Family, Background information ...
Lead guitarist Saul Adamczewski was previously the frontman of indie-pop band The Metros, which also featured the band's original bass player, Joseph Pancucci-Simpson.

The band, fronted by Southampton born[1] and Huddersfield raised Lias Kaci Saoudi[2] released their debut album Champagne Holocaust in 2013. Their second album Songs for our Mothers was released in 2016.[3][4]

In early 2014 the band launched a PledgeMusic campaign to fund their show at South by South West festival, with a subsequent US tour. [5] Rewards for backers include a special massage from any member of the group, dinner for two with the fat white family, drum lessons and a "Primal scream workshop" with Lias Soudi.[6]

They definitely play up the gobby British rock arseholes thing as part of their 'act', but the point of their music hasn't reached me yet either

Main guy nearly had a heart attack tripping on mushrooms and cracked out that night, i'm honestly surprised they're still alive and able to make a record at all.

Main guy returns as out and proud rock arsehole Johnny Rocket in the forthcoming Moonlandingz LP, itself a spin-off of The Eccentronic Research Council's excellent album last year. I'm sure you're all on tenterhooks

I don't really care about their substance abuse problems or their hilarious gobshite antics, I'm not a music journalist, the thing for me is the music and the swagger or lack of swagger

bandcamp's list isn't done but (probably due to obvious self-imposed limitation, at least in the top reaches) is quite good: https://daily.bandcamp.com/2016/12/06/the-best-albums-of-2016-80-61/

i love bandcamp so much of late, so much of my listening comes directly from there. am kind of surprised how much of the stuff on their list i already knew about/loved that i _didn't_ get to through bandcamp, though!

having said that:

"The thing about dark magic is that it really isn’t something to trifle with, not something you can achieve with a couple of crystals from Urban Outfitters, a Stevie Nicks album, a leather corset, a smudge stick and a change to your Twitter handle."

this is false and i have the photos to prove it.

whats up with quietus's #1 Årabrot - The Gospel? track 3 almost sounds like 90s alternative grunge metal

just another (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 19:31 (seven years ago) link

Arabrot is a headscratch record... feels like a contrarian statement to have that one on 1 but hey the rest of the list is good and at last I see an indie-focused list without that painfully average Car Head Seatrest album.

<3 Doran and the gang but this happened with Grumbling Fur a few years ago and appears to be based largely on friendship with the band in question. Which is probably fine, these bands often require a boost, although I've not liked either record myself.

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 19:45 (seven years ago) link

That Grumbling Fur album was great though.

Many xps

I couldn't get in to that Bees album. Think someone on the Spiritualized thread said something along the lines of it being the best thing Jason Pierce had been involved in and whilst it was nice enough, it was nothing that I particularly wanted to listen to repeatedly.

I liked Black Star (the track) as much as anyone, but it was released in November 2015. Seems odd to put it at #1 this year when any other track from the LP was available.
