Over the course of our sprawling phone conversation, it became clear to me why artists—like Santigold, Kylie Minogue, and Charli XCX, with whom he co-wrote half of True Romance—might be attracted to Raisen. He is eccentric and electric, prone to spirited stream-of-consciousness monologues on topics such as the conspiracy of radio, ’70s krautrock, and the virtues of golfing. Discussing methods he’s used in recording, he mentions Brian Eno’s “Oblique Strategies” deck, “power manifestation,” and the Self-Realization Fellowship center near his home in L.A. In fact, Raisen came to collaborate with Gordon only after he and the singer-songwriter Lawrence Rothman experimented with chanting her name. “As you can see,” Raisen says, “I’m super heavy on energy.” (That Raisen and I are both natives of Massapequa, N.Y. was but another cosmic force at work.)

made it one and a half paragraphs into this before it turned into abject self-parody. fuck music.

Do you resent it when people call you a pop producer?

No, I just get a kick out of it. But also, it's 2016. What the fuck is pop, man? I have no clue. Is pop trap? Trap is pop. The Rihanna record is pop. Pop is not even pop anymore. Pop is now experimental. Experimental is now pop.

every sentence i read i'm throwing up in my mouth

lol both the article and the subject are pretty hilarious. i'd kick it w/ that dude for a night

I guess I'm a rebel, but it makes me cringe even watching the VMAs.

That was the sentence that made me really regret not giving up as soon as I saw the goofy-ass photo. Also, I tried listening to the Kim Gordon song and it was shit.

So the Miranda Lambert review seems like a breaking of their policy to not cover any Country music that might end up on being played on country radio.

I mean they took this to the point of not reviewing a single Taylor Swift album

just to give it a mediocre numerical score that is in no way reflective of the content of the review (it deserves a BNM imo)

Why are they splitting these lists by genre this year? (ok it's because of clicks)

I mean, I like that they are giving some shine to some albums that didn't make the Top 50, but I imagine a lot of the albums on these lists are going to make the Top 50. Are they just going to re-use the blurbs?

I'd imagine Solange, Anderson Paak, Blood Orange, Rihanna, a couple others will end up on the big list.

everybody else is doing genre lists, so why can't we?

I would say probably because it waters down the impact of the outlets that have been doing it longer, thus devaluing the supposed importance of doing it at all, but what do I know?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 6 December 2016 19:36 (seven years ago) link

not sure why they even bothered to put the word pop in that list since the only album on there that impacted the wider pop world in any way was ariana grande

i'm really glad that pitchfork are doing genre lists this year. it's refreshing for a publication to focus on neglected genre picks that would get weeded out of a larger list. glad they took this step forwrad, hope other publications do the same in their wake

idk the moodymann and kornel kovacs are great, and i'm excited to figure out whatever this jubilee record is. plus omar s is on it!

I don't know why people keep calling it a "dance" album when it's not and it's not trying to be, but I like this stuff so obviously I must be terrible

also, I don't *know* this but the genre lists would seem to be the natural result of the recent redesign/etc separating reviews and the like by genre, no?

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Thursday, 8 December 2016 17:02 (seven years ago) link

also the koze comp has like, three of my favorite songs of the year on it

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 8 December 2016 17:02 (seven years ago) link

i love moodymann but even he doesn't scream youthful energy of the dancefloor, omar-s is always great but the new one i sp much more of the same, jubilee can be a fun dj but the album is boring watered-down dancehall, and those are indeed the best of a boring list made by people who don't seem to be invested in actually dancing in clubs in 2016

(never heard of kornel kovacs)

xps

ie it's the cumulative impact of all those albums as The Best Of Dance rather than whether a couple of them are in fact good or not

whatever the reason, i am glad that pitchfork is taking the lead in having genre lists

I fucking hate clubs, always have and always will. does this make my opinion invalid? because this is what you're implying.

"that place you hate? the one that exists in thousands of permutations yet is always basically the same? where there's literally no room to maneuver whatsoever and as a result people keep shoving you and spilling their $20 vodka and simple syrups on you? where drunken frat bros flailingly attempt to grope you or, more likely, jeer about how fat you are as you walk by [this has happened pretty much every time I've wound up in a club]? where you can't hear anything at all over the torrential, inescapable roar of crowd noise and your resulting headache, let alone what music is playing?

sorry, but your general human preference to do things you like and not things you dislike means you don't *really* like all that electronic music you love. stick to guitars, you old."

i'd get it if this were "the top dance records of 2016" and they put that horrible nicolas jaar record on there anyway

not all clubs are terrible like that. i don't wish to deny anyone's experience or the problems in club culture but it can be a beautiful thing worth preserving (and under serious threat!) and it deserves far better representation than that list

the jaar backlash has been real, idg what's so hateable about his latest stuff but otoh it's def not as magical as his early stuff so i'm not invested in riding for it
