PEI police! We've moved beyond the Brazil and Russia stage. Nickelback Sucks trope now hits countries in SE Asia that have never heard the band.

An important early 2010s artifact is this Nickelback video where Jason Alexander plays a barista competing against a fedora-wearing version of himself to create the most impressive latte art pic.twitter.com/M3kMMgJrMZ— Brooks Otterlake (@i_zzzzzz) December 14, 2020

funny that this has come up, was just rewatching the Curb season with the Seinfeld reunion and thought a lot about this
always weird to see him with a full head of hair

I remember the marketing meeting where that video was first screened for us. "Funereal" might describe the mood best.

I watched that video on mute for a while and then turned on the sound. Cue surprise that this is indeed a Nickelback song, i.e. angsty and grimfaced, when the visuals would have you expect something closer to Smash Mouth. I don't know if there's another band that's as much of a punchline where the music is just incompatible with that vibe.

Looked it up and that video was directed by Bill Fishman, who directed Tapeheads (along with several Ramones videos!) back in the day.

Is the name of this band a play on the pickle back drink?

the story i remember was one of them worked at Starbucks and a common thing came to $x.95 and he was constantly asking people "do you want your nickel back?"

pretty sure that the pickleback shot was invented in the 2000s.

no no another guy worked at a video store and with the delinquent customers he'd be all putting the tapes in the machine, showing them "THIS is HOW you rewind me"
