Thread for all 2016 albums of the year lists

poor Kate Tempest. her first album wasn't THAT bad was it? (albeit in a 'hey, remember The Streets?' kind of way, admittedly). not heard this new one though

something so rare and refreshing about being able to enjoy exquisitely bad taste like that fopp list. it's a masterpiece

That Fopp list does read like it was compiled by a lot of people who haven't really liked music since the 90s.

Kaiser Chiefs not even in the Fopp list. Almost feel bad for the lads.

Or another perspective, some people are not so quick to drop an artist because they're no longer in fashion. Travis does make me laugh, but to be fair, there's very little that's actually embarrassing. Plenty of other lists will do far worse. While I never liked Garbage, I heard the new album, and it's no worse than the old stuff. Bloc Party, Wild Beasts, The Julie Ruin, Explosions in the Sky, Pet Shop Boys, Primal Scream, Tindersticks, Lucinda Williams are all decent. #60-51 are not unusually retro entries. We'll see Dinosaur Jr on some other lists I'm sure. I like that Teleman is on there, even though I don't think it's quite in my top 100. I don't love the new Suede or Coral, but would take them over Bon Iver. I'm surprised they have De La Soul but not A Tribe Called Quest. Haven't heard the Dexys but would check it out. I used to like Lambchop, but find the latest a chore. Same with the Eno. Just recently heard Christine & the Queens. It's alright, but would never ever say it's close to album of the year territory.

The Piccadilly list has some interesting things:

Camera - Phantom of Liberty - Kosmische
The Mystery Lights - The Mystery Lights - Garage noir and psych. I saw them live last summer, lots of potential.
Cavern of Anti-Matter - Void Beats/Invocation Trex - More Kosmische!
Whyte Horses - Pop or Not - Certainly a unique #1 choice. Slightly psychedelic jangle pop, worth a listen.

Thee Oh Sees, Goat and Psychic Ills will probably turn out to be the go-to psych choices on most other lists. Wolf People, Lola Colt, Syd Arthur, Blues Pills, Purson and Causa Sui remain under the radar for most which is too bad. But what about Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band? They were celebrated in the past, and The Rarity of Experience is a pretty glorious double album.

I dislike Kate Tempest but attempting to sell her as hip-hop is pretty dumb. I know Imago has been trying to make this pile-on happen for about two years though so let him have his fun.

The music isn't very good either. Let's Eat Grandma did one fantastic song a few years ago when they were 13 but the album (including a rerecording of that song) is mostly just annoying

Okay yeah, Hymns kind of sucks, though I still have fondness for the band. But regarding worse tastes than FOPP, exhibit A - NME!

Vanishing Twin is a nice chill listen. I'd recommend Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation - Mirage too.

FOPP list is fine for the most part, just a bit conservative and some token indie choices which probably shouldn't be there, that's par for the course surely.

On the other hand I just checked out Khemmis and was not at all impressed.

Not heard the new Kate Tempest but couple of tracks from her first one were good, dunno why single her out when there's a world of landfill indie out there, and apparently prog-hair-metal too

interesting NME omissions; PJ Harvey, James Blake, Warpaint, Last Shadow Puppets.

this seems to be the year people get off the James Blake bus.

That must be the first time they haven't found room for an album involving Alex Turner on their list.

I've still not listened to the PJ Harvey album and it's almost December. I guess I should.

Thank god for people jumping off the blake bus one of those artists I never understood why they had a fanbase at all. Now if we could sweep Lana del Rey under a rug too.
