Quite a lot of love for the Kiwanuka record. I can hear the questing nature at the heart of it, but I dunno, it feels kinda neutered or sterilised.

― Tuomas, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 10:01 (seven years ago) link
yeah but labels know the year-end lists are published around this time, so they know that if they release new product in Dec it won't feature in the lists. it's their call.

As expected, lots of shrines to the dead and dying (no offense Iggy, please don't croak just yet). That's fine. Has the Beyonce worship faltered, or will she come back strong in other lists with lil sis close behind? I like Solange but I thought the album was boring. Would expect to see Dawn Richard. Regarding December releases, Baroness released Purple Dec 18 but they still made some polls. As long as the band's PR team make sure promo streams make it out in time, shouldn't be an issue with the big rags. I'm used to Decibel omitting my favorites, but actually got two of mine this time, Khemmis and Hammers of Misfortune. I don't see how anyone can love the Blood Ceremony and not also include Purson's album. Yay for Mojo putting Syd Arthur in the top 20. Will I see Wolf People, Lola Colt and The Drones?
― Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 14:08 (seven years ago) link
Since I'll be making them for myself, I'm gonna try to put EOY list playlists here for the ones posted... likely two tracks per album.
― the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Tuesday, 22 November 2016 17:17 (seven years ago) link
I'm assuming that Decibel deliberately go out of their way to make these lists distinctive from a RYM query for best 2016 metal, the top 4 there (Vektor, Ulcerate, Deathspell Omega and Insomnium) aren't on the Decibel list. Which is fine, there'd be no point to it otherwise.

Well can't speak for everyone but I'm mostly interested in a Decibel list to discover stuff that isn't already widely praised. I want to read which albums are remarkable despite not being favourites-by-consensus. This is also why I really look forward to the Textura list.

― billstevejim, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 21:06 (seven years ago) link
p.s. Dec 2014 was amazing
Beyonce and D'Angelo each released surprise December albums in recent years that rendered lots of lists incomplete. Kinda a refreshing reminder that not all artists need or remotely care about year-end validation.
December used to be a drop date for a lot of good but shelved albums from rap and R&B B-listers, but that doesn't seem to happen as much anymore.
― Evan R, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 21:13 (seven years ago) link
Miguel's first album came out the first week of December, for instance. Major labels seem to treat December like movie studios treat January, a release date for projects they don't have high expectations for

The Kate Tempest record might be the worst thing I've heard all year. It's an album with no redeeming features. That and The Anchoress album were the low points of my 2016 listening.
The inclusion of The Courteeners on that Fopp list is the most shocking one for me. The popularity of that group in the UK is baffling.
Surprised to see The Divine Comedy record pop up on a couple of lists. I love that band but it's an appalling album.
I know it's early days, but I have a feeling Shura's album is going to be the most disappointing omission on all these lists.

Sort of understand the hate for Jute Gyte in a sort of macho inadequacy 'it's just nooooise' self-pwning incurious sense but voting Weyes Blood as second-worst album of the year makes me entirely suspect the Brainwashed readership to comprise a suppurating hate-riven subreddit of actively bigoted shut-ins (probably confirmed by the seething unchecked Swans support, lack of POC or women etc etc) - it just isn't an album I could imagine anyone with any sort of acceptable social adjustment hating. Even if you can't get with its vibe it's not much more than an intricate pop-folk record with proggy touches and lots of harmonies. If this is what drives you to hatred then you're undoubtedly worthless and probably a localised threat to others.
― illbient microtonal poetry Surbiton (imago), Thursday, 5 January 2017 20:00 (seven years ago) link
Since I'm one of the assholes who vote in their poll, let me say that you don't actively vote for a "worst album of the year", you just rate the albums you've heard (love, like, dislike, hate) so a record could get in that list simply by the matter of having a lot of people not liking it. I don't think there are that many voters either so it doesn't even have to be a lot of people.
