I was wondering a couple days ago if he was gonna do stuff like trade value for the ringer bc that like actually was good and interesting NBA context but realized he was prob too busy having dinner with celebs

Clay, Friday, 4 November 2016 18:51 (seven years ago) link

this years trade value column to be replaced by "daryl morey explains why all his decisions are good and nice"

lag∞n, Friday, 4 November 2016 18:55 (seven years ago) link

hbo still has him under contract for the remainder of his 3 yr term, i wonder what will come of this

westworld always needs fresh bots xp

Clay, Friday, 4 November 2016 19:31 (seven years ago) link

This show was really godawful tho

The Lebron column he wrote recently was so lazy and bad I bailed about four paragraphs in, it was just instantly vanishing down a solipsistic rabbit hole where the only frame of reference was previous bill Simmons thoughts on the nba

gis for westbrook shark jump (agent hibachi), Friday, 4 November 2016 19:32 (seven years ago) link

The other weird thing is I ended up liking a lot of grantland as basic semi entertaining lunchtime reading (aside from obviously essential z Lowe) but weirdly nothing on the ringer has ever seemed the right length to me, it's either 50k words of faux hot takes riffing on Russell Westbrook instagram post or 200 underdeveloped words on something really interesting

gis for westbrook shark jump (agent hibachi), Friday, 4 November 2016 19:34 (seven years ago) link

ya theyre def doing something wrong over there even pieces on interesting topics by good writers arent quite right?

lag∞n, Friday, 4 November 2016 19:41 (seven years ago) link

i read the latest network piece on there but thats one of maybe three articles I've read since it launched

Spottie, Friday, 4 November 2016 19:43 (seven years ago) link

seems like they're being weird about trying to publish shorter pieces even when it isn't warranted

call all destroyer, Friday, 4 November 2016 19:43 (seven years ago) link

The Ringer is absolutely fucking awful.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 4 November 2016 21:00 (seven years ago) link

ha otm

Spottie, Friday, 4 November 2016 21:05 (seven years ago) link

its interesting bills philosophy for grantland "publish good stuff" was really noob and not nearly specific enough but then with the ringer it seems like hes trying to do something a more focused but it just doesnt make sense and is bad

lag∞n, Friday, 4 November 2016 21:05 (seven years ago) link

the article about nba bench celebrations. could have been fun but i couldnt even get halfway through. and i like the writer generally

Spottie, Friday, 4 November 2016 21:07 (seven years ago) link

yeah gotta be the fastest hbo has ever canned a show

*a show not involving the actual murder of horses

lag∞n, Friday, 4 November 2016 21:09 (seven years ago) link

i've read very little, but i suspect i'd like the ringer better if it looked like grantland instead of medium

mookieproof, Friday, 4 November 2016 21:18 (seven years ago) link

pierce on the show last wk was ultimate cornball

johnny crunch, Friday, 4 November 2016 21:19 (seven years ago) link

omg mediums design is sooooo much better than grantland

lag∞n, Friday, 4 November 2016 21:20 (seven years ago) link

pierce is an idiot sorry celts fans

Spottie, Friday, 4 November 2016 21:21 (seven years ago) link

lag∞n, Friday, 4 November 2016 21:22 (seven years ago) link

k3vin k., Monday, 14 November 2016 22:06 (seven years ago) link

simmons's career is pretty much over, no?

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 14 November 2016 23:37 (seven years ago) link

Collingswrth ended him yes

Spottie, Monday, 14 November 2016 23:53 (seven years ago) link

Hey so he might be dumb in several ways and an insufferable homer in all the other ways but Grantland is always going to be an amazing memory for me. I should make a list of all the people it introduced me to that I try to follow now

Especially the ones who aren't getting to do the amazing kind of work he let them do

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 15 November 2016 00:04 (seven years ago) link

i don't exactly *mind*, but that tweet was a total dick move by collinsworth -- simmons' tweet was aimed at the patritos, not him

and deleting it was a chickenshit move

mookieproof, Tuesday, 15 November 2016 00:26 (seven years ago) link

Cmon it was a great zing

Spottie, Tuesday, 15 November 2016 00:42 (seven years ago) link

simmons (rightly) blasted collinsworth for months about bringing up deflategate and telling a story abt asking tom brady to look him in the eye or some nonsense while the pats were having a sick 4th quarter in the super bowl. i guess cris found out.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 15 November 2016 01:04 (seven years ago) link

sportswriter beef might be one of the more embarrassing internet beefs

Clay, Tuesday, 15 November 2016 02:27 (seven years ago) link

weird cuz I always remember Simmons saying that Collinsworth was the "best on TV"...guess something irked him

frogbs, Tuesday, 15 November 2016 21:00 (seven years ago) link

collinsworth is now going to appear on simmons' podcast

mookieproof, Tuesday, 15 November 2016 21:25 (seven years ago) link

His website, the Ringer, attracted just 420,000 unique visitors in October, according to comScore.

whaaaaat

yup

if bill had sprung just before the espn ship capsized, say in 5 or so yrs, this all might have worked out but competing with them was maybe a fools errand

Simmons vs. Gladwell: The Future of Football

These two rambling about the American football death spiral almost merits its own poll of schtick moments

*Simmons ref to Batfleck (as a peer with Brock Lesnar and LeBron?)
*Gladwell kicking off with "...at a RAND Conference in Santa Monica"
*Gladwell then digressing into boxing history (with no mention of head injuries in the sport)
*Simmons immediately making an ad hoc list of "TWELVE 'second conversations'" that have nothing to do with gambling
*Gladwell defending Goodell by explaining how Goodell's dad was a principled Republican with balls
*"[Source: Charles Goodell Wikipedia page]"
*Simmons making a parenthetical ref to defunct prime time game shows
*Gladwell pronouncing Chris Collinsworth to be the smartest football analyst in the game
*Gladwell drops in FACS trivia
*Simmons has a "simple fix" to keep veterans (i.e.: Tom Brady) from ruining cap space (actual simple fix: eliminate the cap?)
*Both of them go insane coming up with Rube Goldberg solutions to save the NFL from itself
*Gladwell admires the NCAA's overtime rules
*Simmons to Gladwell: (By the way, I like when you call the 32 NFL owners a “cartel.” I’m stealing that.)
*It keeps going for 8,400 words
