I do think the Dell ultrasharps are actually LG panels anyway. I have a third monitor that's an LG, they make the eIPS panels that make IPS affordable and are why those Dell Ultrasharps are 300 bucks instead of 700 bucks. I'm sure this is a great monitor, esp for video, but with print I'd stick with the above.

So what's the ideal point now, price-/general availability-wise, to buy the former MBP, ideally new and not refurbished? Do they get rotated out soon? I fear this question may be terribly obvious, but didn't follow the policy in recent years.

touch bar is fine. sliding volume is nice, so far nothing else matters. i miss tactile feedback but not too much, the fact that it's at the top of the keyboard so accuracy is less important helps. i'm working on something where it would be sorta useful, showing context-sensitive shortcuts depending on what modifier keys you're holding down.

force touch, though. i spent a frustrating five minutes this morning just trying to drag things. i think i eventually figured out the right amount of pressure, but file management shouldn't require fine motor control.

i agree! i was having the exact same problem with force touch. so frustrating. and when i type i keep accidentally hitting the touch bar by accident. this must've happened with the function keys on the last MBP but with less force, so i never noticed. but you don't have to hit the touch bar with any real force to have it register your touch. and the arrow keys are annoyingly placed too.

whoops that got garbled, i meant that i was hitting the function keys with the same amount of force but not enough force to get them to register a keystroke

oo! update: disabled "force touch and haptic feedback" under trackpad settings which helped a lot.

my 5s broke*, so i am getting a 64gb SE. i'm kind of excited about it. having that extra space will be nice. somehow it's cheaper too w/ my verizon plan, i don't really know why.

*i dropped in the toilet about a month ago, it still partially worked but the touchscreen functionality suffered a lot and would fail all the time, i kind of learned how to dictate texts to siri most of the time but eventually that stopped being reliable and became such a pain in the ass to even send a text message that in a fit of rage i threw the phone and the screen shattered. it was embarrassing but i should've gotten a new phone right after the water damage anyway.

Oh wow, I didn't realize that existed - my 6S has been randomly shutting down now at like 15 - 30% battery life and I just assumed it was shitty planned obsolescence in a phone over a year old. This is kind of amazing.

Wow, the support website is real I HATE APPLE territory. More "sorry try again later" and "an error has occurred" than MobileMe.

The trusty 5s I had forever had spent most of this year devouring it's second and third replacement batteries to the point where you couldn't believe anything - randomly shut down, go from 93% power to 14% in 30 seconds. I got really good at power management and at mitigating paranoia by never leaving the house without a charging cable. Yes I did everything. No it didn't work.

So I got a 7. Hardware is straight-up science fiction. I'm agnostic about the analog jack fiasco - most of the weird audio stuff I want it for goes through lightning/midi anyway and I'm already conditioned to use an adapter with my headphones anyway. Still fumbling with the non-home button.

got a 7 for basically the same reasons. headphone jack fiasco IS a fiasco from my end for all the reasons others have said. this is the first smartphone I've had where the new version /= an exciting or forward thinking piece of technology and w/ the physical interface changes it feels like a giant step backwards in terms of usability. it's kinda only good at being a phone

battery on my 5 is getting crap (planned obsolescence?) but I think I can hold out until the 8 in the fall which sounds like it might be new & exciting

Costco/Verizon is running a deal rn where you pay $10/mo for the 7 instead of $27 or $32 or whatever it is. I'm tempted because I now have to charge my 6 like 3x per day. But $0/month is still less than $10, and I still don't feel like I want to go no headphone jack.

I want a new Mac to get back into fucking around with Ableton and affiliated noisemakers. Do I actually need a shitload of horsepower for that? I assume not, but also don't want to get something that's almost immediately obsolete.

It could be that I'm just biased in favor of the imac -- my current setup is my favorite out of 24 years of Macs.

I loved my 24" 2008 iMac. The disk finally went last year and replaced it with a mini and a $50 monitor because it had long since been relegated to photo + music library duty and really nothing else. A new 21" might hit the spot.

How about a used last generation MacBook Pro? That's what I'm using and you should be able to get one pretty cheap now

I had the same iMac, Tom. Video card corruption meant it wouldn't on stay longer than an hour, so I finally bit the bullet and bought a shiny 27' model earlier this year. No regrets!

most anything should be fine unless you go crazy with plug-ins.

Nhex do you use that for gaming as well?

I've had a retina imac for past two+ years and yeah it's been my favorite desktop experience by far

yeah if they offered a 24" option I'd take that. as it is i crank up the font settings on chrome / system. but better to get the 27" than to get the 21" and wonder what if it were bigger

After having a 27" iMac I can't go back to a smaller desktop screen.

why is that? I've never had a big CPU screen so don't really get the attraction, unless you use it to stream videos / gaming

Multiple screens, more room w/ InDesign and Lightroom. I dunno, just can't get used to less screen size after having one. My Macbook Pro is fine, but it feels cramped doing pretty much anything and when I had a 21" iMac at work it felt closer to the MBP than the 27".

If doing photography or any color critical work you should pair the MacBook wait an NEC PA monitor. Or Eizo if you're made of money.
