ya I just read an article on Noisey that was basically like "a mixtape is an album that people release themselves and aren't trying to market like a proper label release"

Fluffy Saint-Bernard (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 4 November 2016 16:34 (seven years ago) link

i wonder if this is the album she wanted to release before her label made her fuck it all up?

i assume this to be all the R&B tracks she recorded during the JOYRIDE sessions, and her and the label settled releasing them as a ~mixtape~ so her proper album can be more of a pop record (where we'll probably find "superlove" and, more importantly, "player," hopefully without chris brown)

mostly empoweringly drab mood music with the unfortunate jojo quality of making you sympathise with the execs somewhat

hard to think of many capable artistes surviving being this polarized, in fairness

flickers in the last third; 'spacetime' is v cool on that reliable astral b sure tip; 'touch pass' is superb, the perfect elusive tinashe poise

r|t|c, Friday, 4 November 2016 18:45 (seven years ago) link

'touch pass' is actually probably p regulation cassie on its own but context gives it ballast

always-underrated amethyst ep now only getting better as artistic statement in retrospect

r|t|c, Friday, 4 November 2016 18:56 (seven years ago) link

not underrated by me!!!

low end production, esp in bass drum, seems a little itunes-cruddy on this, but oh well

i like all the ones where she sounds like she is sad and sits in her room

j., Friday, 4 November 2016 19:24 (seven years ago) link

i def like a lot of this but it feels really like a hodge podge of more introspective/odd stuff with attempts to be commercial r&b

this mixtape is very excellent

i love "touch pass" and "ghetto boy" but it felt like i had to sift through a lot of shapelessness to get there

r|t|c, Saturday, 5 November 2016 17:22 (seven years ago) link

the thing is that this case makes a pretty clear case for why it was shelved as an album but it's not like the alternative of turning her into 2006-era ciara is working artistically or commercially either so like....

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2016 17:46 (seven years ago) link

this tape**

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2016 17:46 (seven years ago) link

i think she prob needs to break up w/ her label and skip to the part where she's the next carly rae jepsen. indie audiences like fka twigs and dev hynes.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2016 17:48 (seven years ago) link

if that Far East Movement single is any indication, she has no talent for club bangers either.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 November 2016 18:04 (seven years ago) link

have you heard the song "2 on"?

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2016 18:12 (seven years ago) link

"2 On" does not sound like this Far East Movement track.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 November 2016 18:20 (seven years ago) link

I think my biggest problem with this isn't that its all downtempo moody haze ambience but that she does nothing interesting with her voice at all. Like, compared to all the personality on Aquarius' big moments - 2 On, All Hands On Deck, Feels Like Vegas - this is so inconsequential.

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 8 November 2016 09:51 (seven years ago) link

Good to hear The-Dream back on his game

I like Superlove but it's such a collection of 2010-11 Terius songwriting tics that it feels like something he could have written in literally minutes.

No interest in the mixtape at all really.

Sevyn w/Terius >>> Tinashe w/Terius

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 8 November 2016 10:37 (seven years ago) link

this is the thread where we discuss matters pertaining to the terius that accompanies the "End of R&B in Music" - 2016

r|t|c, Tuesday, 8 November 2016 10:55 (seven years ago) link

Tinashe really needs a forward thinking pop producer - 2 On was peak Mustard, but bringing Terius back just isn't the way to go.
What's becoming painfully obvious is that she only knows how to write two songs: the one where she's waiting for something to happen and the one where she's excited that it's kind of happening or trying to make it happen.

If you like super love you'll love tink - wet aquafina

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 8 November 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

Let me rephrase that. A huge chunk of her songs are either about trying to get off in some way, impatience at not getting there fast enough or flat out frustration when it doesn't happen. It's all there on Aquarius from the great "get ratchet, go dumb then go more dumb then / we can keep it lit, let's roll" until the album ends with an orgasmic thunderstorm. But as her career's been stalling the sense of inertia and frustration has become all the more pervasive, and on Nightride her "and I know how to get there, don't follow me" lines just sound less convincing, with no release in sight.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 8 November 2016 20:10 (seven years ago) link

Thread is way underrating Nightride imo. It sounds beautiful and really opens up and reveals itself after a few listens.

The Terius "Mr. Yeah" coda tacked onto the end of "Company" is pretty unncessary

The secret to appropriating 80s pop is you need to sound like you enjoy 80s pop. She did not get that memo.
