playing things on your ipod now counts as djing then.

I fucking hate bands who spend more time having their pictures taken than they do writing songs.

This band and that comment reminded me of a video I shot with my friends for school a few months back. I didn't show this on ILM so I don't feel bad about whoring it out now.

Without A Sound: The Koala Flame Story

It's a general Spinal Tap-type parody of posturing indie-rock bands like this.

To the man with the gelled fringe on the tube...
Current mood: indifferent

A drunk man in a dodgy oversized blue t shirt and with his fringe gelled to his forehead came up to me on the tube. He stank of beer and told me trash pussies were 'shit last year at reading'. I found this bizarre, not because of his interesting hair style, but as we never played reading festival, and never intended to.
I have also noticed promoters seem to have no qualms with sticking 'trash pussies' alongside the other names on their flyers, when we have not heard of these nights and have never agreed to play them.
This is starting to bother me. It nags at me, and seems strange and uncalled for.
We started Trash Pussies as a way to have fun in clubs doing something other than getting pissed and lairy- ie- something productive and fun and interactive. And also because we both hugely enjoy music, always have, always will.
Being a part of Trash Pussies has opened us up to so many new genres of music and artists we probably wouldn't have been interested in before, and its always fun to discover new things. We don't take ourselves seriously, we both have no intention of being 'djs' for a living, as we both have other jobs.
I don't understand why people jump to conclusions at something that is in every way productive. If someone hears a set and hears something new and enjoys it, that is an honourable thing.
We hope people come to gigs to enjoy music just as we play gigs to enjoy music.
We don't see djing as an 'art' or ambition, just as a way to have fun and play music we love and believe in. We've gotten better every gig, practising to the point where we are now vey confident- and would like to silence the again, bizarre rumours that we dj off ipods as, a) neither of us have one and b) we use vinyl and cd. We have met some amazing people along the way, and discovered some amazing music, from the favelas of brazil to the ghettotech clubs of new york.
I've also started a new dj collective- the New Testament Party Crew (www.myspace.com/thenewtestamentpartycrew) which is letting me dj music I probably wouldn't with trash pussies (Fifi has a stubborn streak), an altogether more eclectic and broad sound from different genres ranging from baltimore club to dancehall to angolan hip hop. This again is done out for pleasure, rather than a way to 'prove myself' as a dj. Listen to the mixes on our page, a product of frederick blood-royales toil.
I wish people would listen to the music we play before judging us.
I wish that the man on the tube with the gelled fringe could have known this.

TP x

Fair play for the Trash pussies' message.

Fact is, there are so many chancers around, it basically comes down to how much background and interest yon chancers have. (Including them)

Would a fantastic set played off an ipod be better than a lameness done for real? No of course not. Is a massively eclectic set better than a 'familiars and favourites' one? not necessarily.

Is the success factor down to how many removed you are from Bob Geldof?

(jury is out on that one, but not for long...)

Mark G, Monday, 14 July 2008 08:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Unfortunately they call themselves the Trash Pussies so that invalidates anything they do, say or think.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 14 July 2008 09:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Presumably a reference to Fred and Judy Vermorel's "Cash Pussies"...

Mark G, Monday, 14 July 2008 09:50 (fifteen years ago) link

See, I wouldn't go to the places they would play anyway. So it doesn't really encroach on my life. In fact, I'm pretty sure most of us have never heard of most of these bands anyway, and this is the only exposure we've had to them, basically we're actively seeking out being annoyed. Yes, I find these guys irritating, but I never woulda found out about them if I hadn't clicked on this thread, and I'll probably live happily ever after never having to hear their music ever. Which might be great, I dunno, but I highly doubt it, and I still haven't listened to the El Guincho album properly yet, so I'll wait till then at least.

I knew a couple of them at university. I wasn't aware there was a musical element to anything they did though, having never bothered to see or hear them. Friends doing comedy = even worse than friends in bands as far as diplomatic minefields go.

LET'S COUNT THE WES ANDERSON CLICHES/REFERENCES IN THIS NOAH AND THE WHALE VIDEO!

I'm not ashamed to say I have tiny respect for this band because they did the song for Snakes On A Plane
"I'm ready for it, come on bring it!"

VeronaInTheClub, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:18 (fifteen years ago) link

You know, back in the day there were loads of bands who'd make a single and it'd go round the radio stations in the hope that they'd get play.

It wasn't until they did that the record company would put actual money into promoting the band with photos and press and so on.

Now because it's cheap to do so, every band has a backlog of promo shots, videos, archive footage of their first gig, the lot.

There's not enough land for this landfill!

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't know, I'm laughing at this stuff too, but I actually get a kick out of these goofy photos. I like it when a band takes it out there and tries to get away with it, and it's no shame to fail. Better than four blokes against a wall pulling a tinny or something. Here's feedtime, a very great Australian rock band:

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/160/415884.jpg

And you can say, yes, they look pretty cool, definitely not idiots or wankers, and in fact they exemplify their no-frills musical approach very well - but it's not really as in yer face as their music is, not even close - their music is a thousand times more white-knuckled than that. Lots of hardcore bands have this problem when shooting their shots. They don't want to look like dickheads, so they underdo it. The feetime shot is a forgettable band shot that undersells the power of their music. They might have glammed it up a bit, given it a bit of the ol' Motorhead showmanship, why the hell not? So I'm half and half. It's sometimes good to go the hack on a band shot even if you end up overdoing it and looking stupid.

moley, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:47 (fifteen years ago) link

They need bigger photos.

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 11:27 (fifteen years ago) link

ILX can't make it's mind whether we need retarded photos or boring photos:

i'm sorry but none of these bands look very interesting. they need swords or something...

the next grozart, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 11:49 (fifteen years ago) link

(x-post) I think even with the poor range of examples on offer for an 80's band, you can get the gist. If not, here's something similar, but bigger, from Mortal Sin.

http://www.alternative-zine.com/images2/bands_photos/Mortal_Sin/Mortal_Sin_01.jpg

Different band, bigger photo, same observation. Incidentally, I suspect that shot was taken just down the road from where I live. Nice river eh? Care to swim in it?

We neede photos of bands rockin it outrageous style. But those bands have to be rockin it. Canonical example: Queen.
