There's a fantastic second hand record shop in Solna, I think it's called Rainbow Music.

Tag (Tag), Monday, 6 September 2004 20:38 (nineteen years ago) link

You guys are amazing! I was going to ask about clothing stores - I'm in the market for some new stuff...

I'm town from Wednesday to Sunday. I am going to some big house party in Soder on Saturday (people I met while on holiday in Spring), but aside from that I have no real plans - all those suggestions look good! Well, they might not be my travelling partner's cup of tea, but I can twist his arm...

Stefan I might check out that Music for the Masses thing - I really didn't know what to do on Wednesday night!

Hanna if you're going to any of those things maybe I'll see you there - a Swedish ILX mini-FAP, or sorts...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 6 September 2004 20:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I got the MP3s from Emmon's site - nice electropop stuff. Having been a huge Depeche Mode fan in my youth, I would have gone at the reference alone...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 6 September 2004 21:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, the apartment I rented is near the subway station Zinkensdamm - apparently across the street from a good coffe shop called Kaffebar (?). From what I'm told, I'm in a good part of the city...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 6 September 2004 21:19 (nineteen years ago) link

In solna is another good place for twee and such pop, Delicious Goldfish Records, at Förrådsgatan 4.

And Zinkensdamm is a very good place to be. In fact, I have my thoughts on buying an apartment in that neighborhood. Just one stop with the tube from Zinkensdamm is Hornstull, with Mickes Skivor at the street Hornstulls(gatan/vägen - don't remember).

I just learned today that another very very good thing is happening tomorrow (wednesday) at Café Edenborg at Stora Nygatan 35 in Gamla Stan. The best music mag in Sweden, Sonic Magazine, has a release party from 8 pm to 1 am. Sophie Rimheden is going to play live. She is sooo good, you can listen to three tracks from her new album here: http://www.dotshop.se/ds/release.php?code=CDSVED002 . If I don't want to shoot myself thanks to too much overtime lately I'll be there for certain.

TBA (TBA), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:23 (nineteen years ago) link

wow. i thought i wouldn't know what to do in stockholm and now i have so many options! TBA that sonic mag party sounds cool too - i'm torn between that and the mftm electropop night... anyway, i've put pictures of myself on other threads (the 'jaymc tells you which celebrity you look like', most recently), so if you see me, come say hello.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 23:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Aiight. Now I know what you look like.

TBA@work, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 06:52 (nineteen years ago) link

>Chutney @ Katarina Bangata (Södermalm). Quite cheap veggie/vegan food.

Just realised I've been to Chutney - a friend used to work there. Yeah, it was good and cheap.

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 07:33 (nineteen years ago) link

OK, I'm of to the airport now...
TBA, maybe I'll see you tonight.
Dunno what to do Friday - maybe Andreas Tillianer or Debaser. My Swedish friends are going to some indie night at Metropolis, so I may wind up there instead.

Thanks folks.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 08:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Hi Rob, I don't know what my plans are for Friday, may stay home, but could do a mini FAP after work perhaps! Drop me an e-mail if you want & I'll give you my cell # and you can text me if you're lost or something!

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 08:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I am so jealous.

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 08:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Rob, I didn't see you @ café edenborg yesterday. Boo-hoo.

TBA (TBA), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Just got back.
I MUST MOVE TO STOCKHOLM.
I had such a great time and I'm exhausted.
TBA - I did go, but I was late - arrived after Sophie had finished. I stayed for a beer but no-one came up to say hello, so I figured you must have left by then :(
Will write more later...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Hi Rob! I was at the magazine thing on Wednesday too, I stayed at least an hour after Sophie R played - tried to look for you but nah... :-( Good to hear you had a good time!

Hanna (Hanna), Monday, 13 September 2004 08:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Wow, both of you were there and I missed you! Damn. Hanna I thought I saw you but I wasn't sure.

I actually went to KGB afterwards which was great fun. They played lots of old Depeche Mode/OMD/etc. We got very drunk and wound up meeting some friendly people and going back to their place! A pretty long first night I have to say...

Thursday we ignored all your advice and went to Berns for the hell of it. There was some kind of special Swedish party going on - something to do with prawns(!) Everyone wearing some blue/yellow, flags around, etc. There was bad music, and lots of the 'beautiful people' there, that's for sure. I will have to say this for the record: I know it's a stupid stereotype but holy CRAP I have never seen such a collection of attractive blonde people - women and men. We were a bit shell shocked by all this and didn't stay long.

Friday we went to the Vasa museum. Permit me to repeat a setiment already expressed here: BEST. MUSEUM. EVER. Incredibly interesting. Then we hung around the park since the weather was soooo good (sunny the whole time I was there!). I pretty much saw the entire city by walking around - I did that nice walk along Norr Mälarstrand too. At night we wound up going to 'Metropolis', which was funny because it looked like a good London indie club, only in Stockholm. Met up with people I knew and we had a great time.

Saturday I shopped around Soder - Pet Sounds was a great store. I stocked up on my Jens Lekman... At night we went to a house party nearby and eventually went to Debaser for the big anniversay party. We didn't get there until really late (1:30am), so of course we missed the 'special guests' Soundtrack of our Lives. Oh well. Story of my trip, apparently.

On Sunday I went up St Eiksgatan to have a look around, and Freak Scene was closed. However, a store next door - Record Trader (?) - was open and I picked up TONS of great Swedish music. She even gave me some EPs for free (a 'Canadian discount', she said!). The latest Labrador comp is suberb.

All in all, a great trip. Thanks to the Swedish ILX posse for the tips!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 13 September 2004 10:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Hanna I just saw your photo on the new 'what you look like' thread (I didn't see it last time). I'm pretty sure I saw you there now! Bleh.

I will be returning to Stockholm without a doubt (there is a very real chance I may be there for work reasons part of next year), so we'll have to meet another time...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 13 September 2004 10:34 (nineteen years ago) link

"pretty sure I saw you there"

Aah, you should have said hi!! Next time!

"some kind of special Swedish party going on - something to do with prawns(!)"

Hahaha, that's weird, sure it wasn't crayfish?

"we wound up going to 'Metropolis', which was funny because it looked like a good London indie club, only in Stockholm"

Metropolis can be a lot of fun, if you're in a good mood! The pic on the "what do you look like"-thread = me @ Metropolis actually.

"picked up TONS of great Swedish music"

What did you buy?

Hanna (Hanna), Monday, 13 September 2004 11:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, it was crayfish! A strange party, that's for sure.
The craziest thing about Metropolis = blackjack! I played a few hands and suddenly I had an extra 100 kr in chips, which they accpeted at the bar! Surely that can't be legal?

I can't recall everything I bought (I'm at work now). I remember Bob Lund, Suburban Kids with Biblical Names, Broder Daniel... I'll post more later ;)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 13 September 2004 12:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, The Tough Alliance too. I was told about their odd live shows... And how could I forget: The Knife!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 13 September 2004 12:17 (nineteen years ago) link

This is the crayfish season. I was at a crayfish party this weekend too! It's a tradition. It involves silly hats, eating crayfish and drinking snaps (shots). Sometimes you also sing songs.

Hanna (Hanna), Monday, 13 September 2004 12:35 (nineteen years ago) link

But that's a lobster!! Or the biggest crayfish I've ever seen...

I remembered another CD - Melpo Mene's 'Don't Save Me' EP. The 2nd song 'Good with the Mothers' has been stuck in my head all day - one of the most beautiful songs I have heard in a while.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 13 September 2004 12:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Sadly I went home quite early from Café Edenborg so I missed you. But holler next time around, and me and Hanna will greet you with open arms.

Oh, that chips thingy is just what they do in Sweden. Lots of beer if you win!

TBA (TBA), Monday, 13 September 2004 16:27 (nineteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
um, is it deathly cold in mid-november? i don't own a winter coat.

was thinking of popping by for a few days to go to tweepop parties, buy clothes, and check out cute swedish boys. though i'd be going alone, so there better be other corny backpackers at the hostel. is that hostel on the boat still going?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 04:53 (nineteen years ago) link

one month passes...
I shall be in Sockholm 2n-5th December, so this thread is useful.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 7 November 2004 11:15 (nineteen years ago) link

is that hostel on the boat still going?

The boat hostel - af Chapman, a fully-rigged 18th century ship moored at Skeppsholmen - is indeed still going and should be open, I think it only closes in January. I can recommend it, I stayed there this summer. It’s fun, and, if you’re lucky, you’ll get a room with a fantastic view over the harbour - besting any view from the swanky hotels. I was there for a week and the novelty was wearing off, but there was great camaraderie amongst the short-term sea dogs I shared my stay with.
I can also add to the recommendations for the nicely gloomy and impressive Vasamuseét. The Nordiska Museét and the Historika Museét are also worth a butchers though the Musik Museét is disappointing but has a nice café right outside. It might be a bit chilly and choppy and bleak this time of year but it would be a shame for any visitor to miss a trip to/around the miles of archipelago.
The beer’s too expensive but the locals are stunningly attractive, some are even friendly and charming, contrary to popular belief. Good kissers too.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Sunday, 7 November 2004 17:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm going from 3rd to 6th for my fix. Hoping to take my records with me for some possible disc jockey action.

Tag (Tag), Sunday, 7 November 2004 18:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Where are you dj:ing Tag?

Hanna (Hanna), Monday, 8 November 2004 13:13 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not sure yet, or even if I am for sure. Will let you know.

Is this place any good or hideously trendy?

http://www.worldsbestbars.com/city/Stockholm/HalvTrappaplusGard.asp

Meh, Monday, 8 November 2004 15:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I've never eaten there, so I've no idea what the restaurant is like. Only been to clubs/other events a few times. It's an ok place, slightly posh but not too bad. The drinks are too expensive for my taste, but some good clubs reside there.

Hanna (Hanna), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Looks like it might be Riche. Which I know you hate for its aching trendiness, Hanna, but it would be nice if you'd come and say hello. I promise I am not achingly trendy.

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I hope you will be taking your usual collection of banjo-driven techno.

Keith Watson (kmw), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:37 (nineteen years ago) link

don't forget the Kidderminster funk tracks

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I've been to Stockholm. I hated the boat hostel!

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Tag>>> Cool, will try and come! Which day is it? Is it any particular club at Riche that night?

Hanna (Hanna), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:43 (nineteen years ago) link

"Is this place any good or hideously trendy?
http://www.worldsbestbars.com/city/Stockholm/HalvTrappaplusGard.asp"
Free entrance, which is a rarity round those parts.

Hank, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 08:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Hanna, will let you know. Nothing's confirmed yet. But I'm definitely going to be in the city from 3rd til the 6th so we should meet up anyway.

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Banjo-driven techno! I ask you.

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:50 (nineteen years ago) link

I can confirm that it will be Riche on 3rd December. Stockholmers come along.

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 09:19 (nineteen years ago) link

if i go to stockholm and not berlin for the 1st week of december, i'll come say hello. i think i might know what you look like from the s1n1ster website, and also my ex-roommate lucas said he met you once.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 10:23 (nineteen years ago) link

It scares me when people remember me from s1n1ster. Oh, I remember Lucas. How is he these days?

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 11:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I will try my best to make it along to Riche on the 3rd. I shall be arriving in Stockholm around midday Thursday 2nd and leaving late on Sunday 5th. I have heard that the ship, the Varsa (sp?) is worth checking out. I am staying south of Gamla Stan on the island of Södermalm.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 29 November 2004 22:32 (nineteen years ago) link

is it more Swedish than Malmo?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 29 November 2004 22:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Three days and counting...come and say hello if you make it to Riche.

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 13:05 (nineteen years ago) link

will do - soon as I find out where it is!

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 13:22 (nineteen years ago) link

If you guys are in town on Saturday - there's a really great club you should come to. It's my bf's record label hosting a thing at a place called H62, it's on Hornsgatan 62 on Södermalm. Four bands/acts playing, all of them fucking brilliant: The Embassy (dancey smart pop music), The Field (ambient laptop dreamy trance-ish), Differnet (a wonderful marriage between chopped up electronics and pop, with soft and cool vocals and Peter Hook-bass), Viktor Sjöberg (soft electronics).

More info here: www.friendlynoise.tk

I don't know if I'll make it to Riche but do come to the Friendly Noise thing, and if you do make sure to say hi! I l.o.v.e. all the acts playing. You will too. :-)

Hanna (Hanna), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 13:30 (nineteen years ago) link

About Differnet on Pitchfork: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/wearetheworld/04-11-24.shtml#song2

Hey you might find this handy: http://kartor.eniro.se/ if you don't know your way around Stockholm... (Type in street, number, and city, and press "sök", and you'll get a handy little map to print out.)

Hanna (Hanna), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 13:34 (nineteen years ago) link

that is so cool - cheers Hanna! Hornsgatan's very close to where I'm staying too.
