Not unconsciously either I could have said the same thing about Russell Crowe and you wouldnt be calling me racist. I know what I meant you're not making me feel like I wronged anyone.

And no I'm not biased because we dont think in terms of race in my country since we dont have racial struggles. We struggle with economic differences since the middle class is almost nonexistent and sexism (including homophobia in there) I know it's something that might sound unreal to you but yeah here you can be in a room with people of many colors and noone is actively thinking about it. We don't tiptoe around you'll know when someone wants to offend you and I have never in 30 years heard someone angry use racial slurs.

what magical unicorn of a country are you from that has literally zero racial struggles

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 21 October 2016 19:45 (seven years ago) link

also mh no amt of reasoning is going to get through to moka if their definition of racism is "actively thinking about race" and "using racial slurs"

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 21 October 2016 19:46 (seven years ago) link

Alright then I'm a terrible racist, ban me and get this over with I'm bored with this conversation.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 21 October 2016 19:58 (seven years ago) link

ok moka you are dumb this isn't a cultural difference

every country has racial struggles. and you're a hispanophone no? trying to think of the spanish speaking country that isn't deeply racist ... can't.

Literally anything is better than discussing azealia banks.

If you must know I was born in California, Spanish parents and raised in Mexico.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 21 October 2016 20:18 (seven years ago) link

The majority of the race in Mexico is mixed so I honestly don't know anyone who thinks in terms of race in here. Homophobic slurs on the other hand are off the hook and you hear them mostly everyday but they've become so common that they've started to lose their original meaning like most of the other common insults like pendejo cabron pinche and such.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 21 October 2016 20:21 (seven years ago) link

Many pejorative terms stop losing its original meaning depending on the context they're used. When you're already familiar with the person using a word like 'marica' or 'maricon' (originally used as effeminate) isn't particularly offensive depending on the context. In Peru, Mexico and Colombia nowadays it means 'coward' so it's lost its pejorative meaning.

lol

k3vin k., Friday, 21 October 2016 20:31 (seven years ago) link

in chile it is used to mean coward, but also duplicitous, apt to maliciously instigate interpersonal drama. the fact that "gay" is used to mean these things is pejorative

harold melvin and the bluetones (jim in vancouver), Friday, 21 October 2016 20:31 (seven years ago) link

No actually in venezuela or colombia, marica is a substitute for pana or 'dude'. The colombian friends I have all use marica between them without offensive context, 'que ha pasado marica?' is like saying 'what's up dude'. In Mexico it does mean coward so calling someone marica isn't particularly offensive but it does have a more negative connotation.

However really most insults in Spanish act very different than in English... it's not the words in here that are particularly offensive but the way they are used there's literally a popular book about the word 'verga' (cock) which is about all the different meanings insults in Spanish have depending on context.

Per example saying something 'Esta muy verga' literally translates as "it's very penis" but the meaning is actually "this is really cool" however saying "Esta de la verga" which roughly translates as "it's penis-y" means "it's awful".

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 21 October 2016 20:38 (seven years ago) link

I've always liked "no me vale verga"

harold melvin and the bluetones (jim in vancouver), Friday, 21 October 2016 20:42 (seven years ago) link

Like per example... going back to marica. In Mexico it does mean coward but it's not particularly offensive depending on the context. You can say 'Anda no seas marica' which translates as 'come on don't be a coward' but you can say it I dunno to a friend who is scared of doing something like getting on a rollercoaster or whatever. If you say for example "pinche marica" - pinche is another word that can mean a lot of things but it usually stands for low quality... in this instance it means 'fucking' so you're more or less saying 'you fucking pussy' and that's certainly offensive.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 21 October 2016 20:42 (seven years ago) link

one thing I will take away from this conversation is the phrase "it's penis-y"

this is really common in the anglophone world - I'm from scotland and being told "don't be a poof" because you don't want to go out drinking or get on a roller coast or whatever is extremely common - and is considered offensive.

harold melvin and the bluetones (jim in vancouver), Friday, 21 October 2016 20:46 (seven years ago) link

There's no translation for it so penis-y haha it's penis as an adjective but saying cocky is another meaning in english... spanish would be. 'se cree muy vergas' "he thinks he's the best"
