It's a fucking awful review

imago, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 17:01 (seven years ago) link

I'm assuming the cover art images for the reviews have recently gotten huge on desktop for everyone else too? But they're not using high res images so it looks terrible.

early rejecter, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 17:06 (seven years ago) link

xp to self The way it wrangles in The Doors is completely senseless, it doesn't seem to understand what's going on musically at almost any point and it spends its second half trying to ascertain just how *kitsch* and *self-aware* the album is like this is pomo class 101 or something, with every piece of art reduced to how neatly it fits Pitchfork's ridiculous kitsch/self-aware house dichotomy and ignored on the grounds of, like, composition, musicianship, emotional intensity etc. I mean, a BNM is cool and all but come the crunch, you gave the review to the intern?

imago, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 17:10 (seven years ago) link

looks like they're starting to phase out track reviews? i see only 4 or 5 posted from this week so far, whereas there used to be 8 or 9 per day.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 18:56 (seven years ago) link

Good. those track reviews were always so confusing and pointless. even more shoehorning and spinning than the album reviews

flappy bird, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 18:59 (seven years ago) link

you do realize the review was written by a senior editor and not "the intern"

like, I don't care if the review was 1000 words, 999 of which were actually a digression to endorse Donald Trump, that'd still be unnecessary and insulting

that it was written by a senior editor makes the review even sadder

hahaha god

er, missing parenthetical should be (but that'd require actually engaging in good faith)

fwiw I did read it. I also know what a waltz is.

oh come on

flappy bird, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:53 (seven years ago) link

i take back the bit about it being written by an intern. i proffer instead the view that at least one of pitchfork's senior editors writes like an intern

imago, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:54 (seven years ago) link

the review's emphasis on how self-aware the artist is is embarrassing, it's basically insulting to artists in general by implying that it's unusual for an artist to be aware of the tropes/styles/aesthetic frameworks they operate in

Οὖτις, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:56 (seven years ago) link

xpost

lmao

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:58 (seven years ago) link

Katherine, how do you expect this argument to play out, honestly?

Louis: "This review is bad."

Katherine: "Um, it was written by a senior editor at Pitchfork Media."

Louis: "My mistake, it is in fact very good."

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:03 (seven years ago) link

That wasn't really her point though, as far as I can tell. Just that it wasn't actually written by an intern.

Evan, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:05 (seven years ago) link

my point is "if you're going to publicly mock writers and/or their work, you should at least get your facts straight," and also "maybe don't refer to senior editors as 'the intern,' especially if they're women"

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:18 (seven years ago) link

Um, a lot of his favorite art films pass the Bechdel test, remember?

you'd like the record i feel. it's good

flappy bird, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:41 (seven years ago) link

cool, you got anything i can read on it?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 20 October 2016 18:00 (seven years ago) link

also, to clarify, katherine, yes I see how louis is using coded misogynist language, but i just think it's fun to pop in here and be a dick

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 20 October 2016 18:01 (seven years ago) link

referring to a female senior editor as 'the intern' strikes me as less of an antifeminist dickmove than halfheartedly giving one of the greatest albums of the 21st century so far an 8.3 and a trite let's-make-loads-of-shitty-comparisons review when had it been made by a man, say mark kozelek, who is maybe 1/60 as interesting as weyes blood, the review would have been fucking oceans of existential rapture. idk though it's all subjective isn't it

Louis, heads up, your weird obsession with RYM ratings and Pitchfork scores is really more appropriate for /mu/ and Reddit and Fantano YouTube comments and other places where — COINCIDENCE?!?! — is also more acceptable to make antifeminist dickmoves.

those places are full of actual mouthbreathing morons though so I don't post there

i can see why it was a problematic statement and i feel a bit bad for saying it but i really was just commenting on the ineptitude of the writing. i didn't even consider the gender of the writer. perhaps i should have. sorry.

and fwiw i think that more music journalism should be by women, poc and other non-hegemonic identities, but that won't stop me from calling out shitty music journalism if it directly misconstrues the work of artists i like, no matter who wrote it

"On “Generation Why,” arguably the album’s centerpiece, she actually sings the letters “YOLO” with more thoughtful care than the phrase ever deserved."
