this stuff all seems competent but its not really for me any more

the "out the zoo" beat is pretty sick but the rapping doesn't do anything for me

How come?

Evan R, Sunday, 16 October 2016 02:10 (seven years ago) link

other people like him now

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Sunday, 16 October 2016 06:22 (seven years ago) link

People have always liked him cornballs in the press are just super late

I'd say it's a mix of stiffer rap style and boilerplate lyrics and just a general sensation that he's not really pushing himself

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 16 October 2016 06:36 (seven years ago) link

= the wrong people like him now. I get that you prefer the 07-09 run, I do too. But the boilerplate lyrics accusation has been around forever, and given that he has been out for just a few months and have dropped two albums in that time, and that he sounds a lot more at home and confident and is clearly trying (and generally succeeding at) saying something about who and where he is now, speaking about his addiction and so on, I'd say he may well be pushing himself. Maybe he'll slip back into some kind of lazy default mode shortly but at the moment he's definitely trying to redefine himself. You don't have to like the direction he's going in though.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 17 October 2016 06:44 (seven years ago) link

it's not what you say, it's how you say it

I agree with deej, this stuff is average as fuck, it isn't even close to his best 2011 or 2012 tracks.

But the boilerplate lyrics accusation has been around forever

yeah by people who didn't know what they were talking about lol

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 October 2016 14:24 (seven years ago) link

i've quite liked some of his guest verses this year -- black beatles and vibin in this bih come to mind immediately -- but i agree with deej that his solo tracks have been pretty stiff

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 October 2016 14:25 (seven years ago) link

"The wrong people like him" is a reliable sign sure I like to think of them as negative indicators

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 17 October 2016 15:56 (seven years ago) link

I can't even argue with that, lol. I still enjoy this album though.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 17 October 2016 16:39 (seven years ago) link

I think his verses are as good as they've been in years; it's the hooks that seem a little tired to me. Small quibble though. I'm just enjoying hearing him enjoy rapping again.

Evan R, Monday, 17 October 2016 17:03 (seven years ago) link

I like his bit in "Black Beatles."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 17 October 2016 17:25 (seven years ago) link

black beatles, step it up, champions, prolly, guwop home all p.good recent stuff

||||||||, Monday, 17 October 2016 21:51 (seven years ago) link

His voice just sounds like a different rapper to me now.

Tim F, Monday, 17 October 2016 22:12 (seven years ago) link

That's mostly because he's sober, perhaps?

Anyway, falling out of love with someone is never pretty but it can't be helped I guess. Woptober is still one of my favorite albums this year and Everybody's Looking has its gems too.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 09:05 (seven years ago) link

i wouldn't go as far as 'favorite albums this year' but i gave woptober a good listen & its def an improvement over everybody's looking

“Last night, me and Future met up in Atlanta," Gucci Mane told Miss Info. "We ditched our entourages, we didn’t book my usual studio, or his usual studio… It’s like we knew we wanted to fly under the radar. There was like this positive competition in the room. I’d hear him go in on a verse, and I knew I had to step up.”

Explaining his chemistry with Future, Gucci continues, “He would say the same back, and we knocked out 6 songs so crazy that I knew we couldn’t just sit on it. We talked about recording some more, adding more songs. But I didn’t want to over think it or over plan things. Even Future didn’t think we were dropping this tonight. This is the freshest it can get. These joints ain’t even 24 hours old. That’s like bringing you in the studio with us.”

lol same ol gwop

I don't understand why it sounds like this. Is he rapping over guide vocals? Is he rapping at all?

Evan R, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 02:08 (seven years ago) link

? it sounds normal to me

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 13 December 2016 20:33 (seven years ago) link

I guess I must've been thrown by the delay on his vocals or something. The whole thing just sounded overdubbed and weird to me.

Evan R, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 20:36 (seven years ago) link

watched the "first day out" performance and found it a little lifeless but it's a cool idea i guess

k3vin k., Tuesday, 13 December 2016 21:05 (seven years ago) link

he was def rapping over his own vocals some, standard practice these days, the piano/minimal beats were p cool imo

lag∞n, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 21:21 (seven years ago) link

You can def hear him over the backing track, cuz he did his own radio edits lol

i thought the performance was great, i mean it's a tiny desk perf what more are you looking for

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 13 December 2016 21:44 (seven years ago) link

more banjo and glockenspiel tbh

marcos, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 21:45 (seven years ago) link

this has been true for a long time, but online culture often celebrates ~the idea~ of a rapper more than the actual rapper, and this seems like a peak example of that

Evan R, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 22:24 (seven years ago) link

that's kind of been the whole thing since he got out of jail tbh

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 14 December 2016 12:43 (seven years ago) link

East Atlanta Santa is way better than anything he's released since getting out. His best bars in years, and he seems to have pushed his producers, too.

his verse on the new big boi song feels vintage to me... suwoo bentley and the forgies suwoo too / and i know two jews eat a case like it's fast food

& considering that he raps about mapquesting to your house, the verse might actually be like 10 years old

I read the book, btw. It was a bit short for a guy who has released so much music and has been part of so much, but on the whole it was nice enough. Turns out that big pot belly before he went in was... constipation. Ugh.

"Gucci Mane Biopic in the Works"

http://variety.com/2018/film/news/gucci-mane-biopic-paramount-players-1202693921/

Paramount Players and Imagine Entertainment have launched development of a biopic on musician Gucci Mane based on his “The Autobiography of Gucci Mane.”

The studio has obtained life rights to Mane, whose real name is Radric Delantic Davis, and movie rights to the book. Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins will produce the project. Mane and Todd Moskowitz will executive produce.

Mane is a pioneer of the hip-hop genre known as trap music. He made his studio album debut in 2005 with “Trap House,” the first of a dozen studio albums, followed by “Hard to Kill.”

The book tells of his childhood in poverty in Alabama and his move to Atlanta, where he became involved in criminal activity. He spent nearly three years in prison starting in 2004 after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. While incarcerated, he began releasing mixtapes from prison with rappers Migos and Young Thug.
