I'm assuming the cover art images for the reviews have recently gotten huge on desktop for everyone else too? But they're not using high res images so it looks terrible.

xp to self The way it wrangles in The Doors is completely senseless, it doesn't seem to understand what's going on musically at almost any point and it spends its second half trying to ascertain just how *kitsch* and *self-aware* the album is like this is pomo class 101 or something, with every piece of art reduced to how neatly it fits Pitchfork's ridiculous kitsch/self-aware house dichotomy and ignored on the grounds of, like, composition, musicianship, emotional intensity etc. I mean, a BNM is cool and all but come the crunch, you gave the review to the intern?

i take back the bit about it being written by an intern. i proffer instead the view that at least one of pitchfork's senior editors writes like an intern

the review's emphasis on how self-aware the artist is is embarrassing, it's basically insulting to artists in general by implying that it's unusual for an artist to be aware of the tropes/styles/aesthetic frameworks they operate in

referring to a female senior editor as 'the intern' strikes me as less of an antifeminist dickmove than halfheartedly giving one of the greatest albums of the 21st century so far an 8.3 and a trite let's-make-loads-of-shitty-comparisons review when had it been made by a man, say mark kozelek, who is maybe 1/60 as interesting as weyes blood, the review would have been fucking oceans of existential rapture. idk though it's all subjective isn't it
