Yikes

niels, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 14:45 (seven years ago) link

Yeah that might epitomize the 80s continuation/transformation of this aesthetic. Grayer and more brightly-lit, but otherwise the same old shit.

(xp) fabulous album btw

Millions of species Faye Dunaway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 1 November 2016 00:02 (seven years ago) link

Jake's Progress, obviously, not whatever I typed yesterday. Pun on (a) rake's progress, I guess.

koogs, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 15:36 (seven years ago) link

Oddly, having never heard him before, he was on the radio twice in 24 hours, yesterday.

koogs, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 15:37 (seven years ago) link

...is he some sort of singing rural Northern English veterinarian?

Yorkshire's answer to Jacques Brel, basically. Sadly missed.

Prob because the painting is obscures the title in several ways...

Not 70s but I think the title definitely channels the same awfulness:

It doesn't say which Bach, does it? Based on that photo it's more likely to be Johann Christian than Johann Sebastian:

The Knack - ...But The Little Girls Understand

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Monday, 21 November 2016 15:10 (seven years ago) link

I don't think that really fits - it's just an old blues line from Howlin Wolf etc.

Skyhooks - Ego Is Not A Dirty Word (1975). Sorry for the huge image but the next step down is all like washed-out and illegible 300x300 pixel ones shot at a funny angle. And man, that back cover.

dustalo springsteen (Doctor Casino), Monday, 21 November 2016 16:38 (seven years ago) link

Their complete studio discography:

Living In The 70's (1974)
Ego Is Not A Dirty Word (1975)
Straight In A Gay Gay World (1976)
Guilty Until Proven Insane (1978)
Hot For The Orient (1980)

yeah but (1) it's p creepy and gross, and (2) the cover is a really shit pun on it amirite? (i.e. the woman is under a mic stand)

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Monday, 21 November 2016 17:15 (seven years ago) link

Not everything is a pun, Nick.

The Doug Walters of Crime (Tom D.), Monday, 21 November 2016 17:39 (seven years ago) link

i know i know but there are only two things on the cover - a girl and a stand - and they are arranged on two different levels so you know you know

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Monday, 21 November 2016 17:42 (seven years ago) link

also the person on the cover is sharona who is described in the song my sharona as a 'pretty little thing' so you might resonably conclude that the creep who writes the lyrics for the knack might possibly describe her using the irksome term 'little girl' so eh ...the little girls under a stand am i labouring this much?

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Monday, 21 November 2016 17:47 (seven years ago) link

haha wow ok I totally missed that the first time lol

Seems like the front cover artist missed the cue on drawing one of the hands missing a finger?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 09:32 (seven years ago) link

Shit, good call... maybe the fifth hand over from the left, though it's sort of hard to sort out that whole clump of hands right there. If it is a thing, it's much subtler than the cover as a whole would suggest is possible.

dustalo springsteen (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 22 November 2016 13:54 (seven years ago) link

the Skyhooks were masters of the form!

this thread always cheers me up

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 22 November 2016 14:45 (seven years ago) link

The hand closest to the POV looks like a right hand and is only showing 4 fingers, and the nail polish matches. I see a thumb and the next 3 fingers. It could be the pinky is the one cut off rather than just out of view.

nickn, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 20:25 (seven years ago) link

Green fingernailed hand in the middle there is actually a severed hand being waved around by someone else. Red fingernailed hand second from left has three fingers and a thumb only. What this means I dunno.

everything, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 21:18 (seven years ago) link

Also follows that the visual of the band on stage would be from the letter-writer's point of view.

nickn, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 21:26 (seven years ago) link

The PS on the letter is "I will wave" so I'm going with the idea that the foregrounded fingertips are Denise's.

everything, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 21:31 (seven years ago) link

I wonder if the band wanted to show the finger stump but the label said no way, and the art was changed.

nickn, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 21:57 (seven years ago) link

So so happy with this series of posts.

many x's and p: that Terry Stamp album is actually pretty cool, with Ollie Halsall from Patto on guitar. And Stamp was in Third World War. But that doesn't change the cover.
