have you seen them in person? the straps actually look really good in that pale color, and moreover i don't think vw does the flat kind in solid black (though you can get high-heeled versions).

LAUREN STOP LOOKING AT WINTER SHOES. I don't care what WWD sez. Plus I haven't even thought about sandals for the upcoming two-month heatwave.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:10 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't know what the red wedges are! I can't find them on zappos again :( (and apparently zappos doesn't even ship to canada (wha?) so I shall remain in my shoe-fantasy world as per.) Laurel will let us know though, I hope.
xpost

totally wear the donna shoes! but not a lot. (this is also a good excuse for having lots of other shoes.)

I dunno, I'm starting to worry about going all fetishy because I'm starting to lust after boots like this:

Vernon Jackson (kate), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:11 (seventeen years ago) link

laurel, black boots are year-round. i am SO NOT a "summer shoe" person.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:14 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost - I like that second pair - equestrian, with a touch of motorcycle/pirate!

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not really a "flat shoe" person but I can do strappy summer things okay, I just need arch support FULL-TIME so at least a 1.5 or 2" heel (or more!). Obv I could drool over Sigerson Morrison all day but no joy due to budget.

The maker of those red wedges and assorted similar designs is "Bronx." They're a sort of average shoe-ghetto level of brand but they do good work here and there and I really love my bronzey leather version of those heels.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, they are motorcycle cop boots.

I have a pair of motorcycle/engineers boots, but they don't have nearly enough buckles on them. Or go high enough.

Vernon Jackson (kate), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:20 (seventeen years ago) link

These are Bronx, too, but I think I could go for them!

whoa! oh ye smaller people with the luxury of wearing the chunky crazy shoes and still looking cute/great. (though i guess i could pull if off with a just-below-the-knee skirt. prob not.)

i don't normally like steve m@adden but i'm into these:

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Robyn, I think you are hardly a giant among women -- embrace yr statuesque-iosity!

Caution re the rope platforms above: the heel might jam your poor toe junction mercilessly into that thong. Also, the back strap doesn't buckle, it only has elastic, and that elastic WILL wear out. Granted it's only like $5 to have replaced but y'know, it's just one more thing.

Blue fishtail-y wedges are purdy!

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Laurel, you are smart about the architecture of shoes.
And yeah, hells, I'm just shy of 5'8, you are right. Living in QC really skews one's perspective though. Small-people land.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I have the Bronx wedges, but in aqua blue. They're great!

my latest:

I'm hgoing to pick up some brown slip-on Vans for summer soon, I did see some nice perforated leather ones in NYC but none in my size and colour preference :(

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 17:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I bought:

Problem with finding all these photos is I just found about 3 more pairs I want on the website and am having a hard time unjustifying the purchase since it's freaking Payless.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:12 (seventeen years ago) link

i thought laurel's reddish brown ones above were going to be an ally post. purty hot.

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I only WISH the reddish-brown ones were available at Payless prices. Le sigh of unpaid-electric-bill-having.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Guys there is a very limited but still intriguing CREATE YOUR OWN SHOE option at SteveMadden.com all of a sudden. It's only a couple of styles but this can keep me occupied for days.

xpost seriously dudes check out the Payless website, they have a lot of pretty cute things there lately??? I'm kind of loving these ones right this exactly moment: https://www.payless.com/images/thumb/047488_thumb.gif

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:27 (seventeen years ago) link

no wait that's not right, these ones: http://www.payless.com/Images/beauty/047619_beauty.gif

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:27 (seventeen years ago) link

OH! Yeah I hate the baby-blue flowery ones but I dig the straps & rivets on that striped-heel version!! ;)

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

They had ones in the window that looked similar to the Via Spigas up thread, about 2 months ago. Oh you know what so did...maybe...Target? Or something like that. I don't really like straps like that though so I didn't pay enough attention, I've had shoes like that and whenever I got drunk I always kind of thought they made me feet look disconnected from my legs so I ended up throwing them out!! The things I did when I had money.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Hah. I tried on a pair at DSW a year ago that were amazingly well-balanced and with the heel centered right where my weight goes and with a perfect angle of arch, but the materials were crappy and i could see the edges were going to fray and I wasn't interested in shoes that were going to show their lack of quality. But I do like that cross-in-front strap.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:05 (seventeen years ago) link

"no one ever got my Leo Johnson joke"

haha - I did I did! first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:07 (seventeen years ago) link

What is with mid-price (meaning between $50-$150) designers recently and the utterly shit construction of the shoes? I think that's why I finally just gave up and started doing the Payless/Target thing more regularly. When the freaking heel breaks or it scuffs or frays (which actually hasn't happened too much to me with any of 'em yet, though I am notorious for grinding down the heel of any shoe) I don't feel bad TOSSING them, plus I don't feel bad in 3 months when I'm like "Why did I purchase orange plaid shoes again?" getting rid of 'em.

The cross in front strap seems better to me on more delicate shoes, I guess, something about the really thick straps doesn't work on me very well. Maybe I have fat ankles!!!!

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Ally yr taste in shoes is like a collision between my sister's and my own -- in fact, that's true in many ways. It's like they made one prototype and then decided it was naturally unstable and separated it into two models from then on. Except I might be older than you so that doesn't work. But you know what I mean.

Fat? Ankles? FAT?? Shut up, Legs Malone.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:10 (seventeen years ago) link

I wear the tar out of heels but luckily you can have the lifts replaced for like $8 a pair. SMILEY COBBLER FACE.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:12 (seventeen years ago) link

irritating. i bought a pair of black suede boots for $190 last fall which lasted for five months before developing an unfixable hole in the heel seam. the $30 replacement pair seems sturdier. what gives?

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I tried the Steve Madden make your own shoe thing online, but ended up kind of underwhelmed with the result. Upthread, I really like the reddish-brown ankle strap wedges Lauren posted and the orange ones Ally posted.

what do y'all think of this one? they're on sale...http://images.ninewest.com/images/products/FEWDOZENR.BERDMPAPD.jpg

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I would totally buy those in like 5 seconds if I could.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:20 (seventeen years ago) link

god, I know, right? they're 39.99 on the Nine West website. stupid car insurance bill.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:22 (seventeen years ago) link

i've never bought shoes at payless! but in the past week i've asked more than one person about their shoes and they've whispered "payless" back to me. i'm kind of excited about this development and will be visiting a payless soon, possibly under cover of darkness.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh shit $39.99????????

I am really coming to the point where I find it harder and harder to justify paying large amounts of money on shoes. I wear them down tremendously, make no effort to take care of them, and then really just don't have the attention span to remember to get them fixed before the heel etc gets tooooo manky.

Doesn't stop me from going through Bluefly hoping for some mispriced Jimmy Choos to show up eventually but hell if I'm paying even $200 for them.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:30 (seventeen years ago) link

The lovely Emma B bought some lovely buttery brown leather boots recently that went up almost to the knee. Unfortunately, the luscious leather they were made with was "permanently" fused to some kind of custom rubber heel that decided to CRACK and SPLIT after like three months of London walking and no cobbler would fix them. Perfectly good boots, otherwise!!

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:31 (seventeen years ago) link

oh man I should not have looked at the nine west website

http://www.ninewest.com:8087/fif=nw/NWMARYKATE.fpx&obj=iip,1.0&wid=300&hei=300&rgn=0.0,0.0,1.00000000,1.00000000&lng=en_US&vtrx=1&cvt=jpeg
The dark red ones!!

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I know what you mean, Ally. I guess there are people who spend, like $400 on a pair of shoes, and when I'm looking on Zappos or whatever, I'll sometimes get seduced and be like, hey, it's 50% off, that means it's only...$200...okay, I still can't do that.

but 39.99 is reasonable! you should get them, since I can't.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

these ones too
http://images.ninewest.com/images/products/NWDARVA.IVMRECVPD.jpg

shit.

xpost I know. I often get influenced by the percentage-off number, and not the actual price actually. More so with clothes than with shoes but I tend to hang onto clothes a lot longer than shoes so I justify it to myself, yet still I'm sitting here like "Why DID I buy those thigh high stiletto boots again?"

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm in lust with the red patent leather series Tara Subkoff did for Easy Spirit. EASY SPIRIT. Mein gott.
http://www.easyspirit.com/s?namespace=catalog&origin=viewall_category.jsp&event=p.shoe&pid=12780&cid=45001#

XP: yeah but you have to take care of shoes! I mean, you don't HAVE to in which case yeah, keep buying ones you won't miss and everyone's happy. But I like finding that $200 pair of Italian boots for $20 (TRUE STORY) at DSW and even over the LIFE of the pair of shoes I probably won't pay the orig price for re-heeling/re-soleing/polishes. And the construction is gorgeous. It's just a terrible idea for "event" shoes cos you never know what you'll find or when.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:38 (seventeen years ago) link

ha, oh god. i remember looking for boots a few years ago and i saw a really sick pair under the easy spirit sign and went over to investigate. they were tara s. designed, and i nearly had a heart attack when i flipped them over to check the price - like $600. for easy spirits!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:41 (seventeen years ago) link

god, patent leather is so gorgeous. why don't I have more patent leather shoes? those are beautiful, and they must feel like a SNEAKER, which is amazing.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:41 (seventeen years ago) link

YUMMY. Okay, $240 worth of yummy.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Those are super cute, Laurel. Tho when the hell did Easy Spirit become so expensive????????????? err xpost...

In terms of the rest of your post, if you find things like that then yeah totally do it and totally take care of them! What I'm talking about, basically, is shoes that the LIFE of them, for me, is going to be a year, max (and even then yeah, I often have the same thing Lauren mentions, the expensive pair gets jacked and then the cheapy replacement I buy out of necessity for rest-of-season holds up), I just...dunno. I'm nowhere near (meaning metro-able as I don't have a car) a DSW, btw, that I know of, so my only current outlet (ha ha ha etc) is the internet which is surprisingly kind of crap for this kind of thing. :(

Anyway my credit card was saved for another day as the two shoes I wanted on Nine West did not come in my size.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

those dark red nine wests are CUTE. i have this 70s leather coat that would look awesome with them.

and that is a very sad story about boots :(

those easy spirits are crazy!

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:45 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, i meant the crazy patent ones.
those ones are totally GREAT.
