In ten years time, will anyone still be listening to DMB?
I THINK NOT!

Regardless of how I feel about DMB, this is a dumb thing to say. EVERYONE who's had ANY measure of success will still have people listening to them ten years after their success. Fact.

Actually, I defy anyone on this thread to list a band/artist who had a hit that no one ever listens to anymore. You just can't do it unless you happen to know exactly what every human being on the face of the earth is listening to at any given moment.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 June 2003 13:30 (twenty years ago) link

Well, I meant it more in a general sense, i.e. will the Dave Matthews Band still be a going concern, and if so, will they be at all a relevant, viable force as compared to their current status.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 June 2003 13:50 (twenty years ago) link

So what would make them any different than 80% of the artists popular today? How many huge acts from 1993 are still relevant, viable forces today? (The ones I can immediately think of are Snoop, Dre and Madonna; most of the other big hitters from then have fallen off big time.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 June 2003 14:28 (twenty years ago) link

So what would make them any different than 80% of the artists popular today?

That's my point. They're not.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 June 2003 14:40 (twenty years ago) link

nice return!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 9 June 2003 14:40 (twenty years ago) link

They're NOT nearly as exceptional as some of the opinions expressed above would have you believe.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 June 2003 14:41 (twenty years ago) link

That's a classic example of objective data used in a deeply subjective manner. The fact that the majority of people don't take Tiffany seriously or have forgotten about her doesn't change the fact that there are fans of hers today who think that she's the greatest performer ever. Furthermore, that's completely within their perogative and their rights as music listeners.

This thread has turned into a rote exercize of heaping scorn on other people's musical tastes for the cardinal sin of being different when it should have focused on heaping scorn on poxy Dave Matthews and his frightening chin.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 June 2003 15:03 (twenty years ago) link

See, that's where you and I part, Dan. I have fewer problems with Dave Matthews (to say nothing of his chin, which seems pretty innocuous to me) and than I do with his fans who consider him some sort've demi-god.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 June 2003 15:07 (twenty years ago) link

strike that "and" after the closed-parentheses.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 June 2003 15:08 (twenty years ago) link

I wouldnt expect anything else from my fellow DMB fans as they're merely responding to (unnecessary) attacks on their favorite band. A band who I truly believe are unique , stand for something and whos music is great.

Marien, Monday, 9 June 2003 15:24 (twenty years ago) link

I can however see why some may call the music noodley and bloated. Some like it and some wont. As simple as that.

Marien, Monday, 9 June 2003 15:26 (twenty years ago) link

Marien, did you get poor marks in grammar?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 June 2003 15:30 (twenty years ago) link

okay first I'm with dan at being pissed at the regulars acting like fucktards and baiting obv. v. young foax for no good reason -- go pick on ppl. yr. own size.

second I rilly want some DMB fans to tell me which songs they like most, how the sound of his songs changed over the last few albums, why it stopped having that goofy bouncy feel of "what would you say" and if that's a good or bad thing, whether you like dave's peppy or dreamy voice more, etc.

[honestly Jon, leave the grammar baiting to usenet]

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 9 June 2003 15:38 (twenty years ago) link

I'm still curious why you were annoyed with me earlier, Sterling.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 June 2003 15:42 (twenty years ago) link

Honestly, I don't know how else to antagonize them.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 June 2003 15:42 (twenty years ago) link

Sterling was annoyed cuz you were ranking your own taste over some high-handed search for a true populist ethos where even 50,000 Dave Matthews phans can't be wrong cuz, above all else, one must dance side by side with the masses to show that you're keeping it real even if your own appreciation is so far removed from genuine fandom and interest that it ain't even academic it's so clinical. That's my guess anyway.

I've seen three Dave Matthews Band concerts (I'm from VA, and not only is it for lovers, it's for South African ex-pats who know just how good the weed is that grows at the feet of the Blue Ridge Mountains) and what struck me most was that there's a Jimmy Buffett-esque kulchur among the fans (partying, big smiles, neohippies), but it was firmly rooted in a Very Deep Respect for the music. No chants with certain parts. No choreographed hand movements from groups of excited grrls. None of that. And I found it really obnoxious -- the revelry that greeted the band, the closed eyes and mouthed words and shoulder hugs that made me feel like I was at a Promise Keepers rally.

Under the Table and Dreaming is good record.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 9 June 2003 15:54 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't 'splain myself too well in that second graf: What I meant to say was that at every other concert I've been to for a band with a Huge Fawning Following (from Buffett to the Dismemberment Plan) there have been signs of naked enthusiasm for the band shown via syncopated handclaps, arm-waving, prop-tossing, and the like. But at the DMB shows I've attended, it's been like church, only with worse music (which isn't to call DMB terrible (I do like UTTAD), but to say that gospel music is great).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 9 June 2003 16:01 (twenty years ago) link

And as much as I dislike most of the jam bands, it's hard to find a more popular genre that music crit has totally ignored, which is a shame.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 9 June 2003 16:14 (twenty years ago) link

(Deeply Stereotyped) DMB Fan: DMB roools! If you only heard more of their stuff, you'd agree that they're the best band ever!

Ned: But I've heard tons of their stuff and they bore the tits off of me. I am not engaged by their music at all and I don't have to be.

Sterling: NED YOU EVIL FIEND STOP TALKING DOWN TO PEOPLE.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 June 2003 16:15 (twenty years ago) link

Also, Sterling mischaracterized me. I am not pissed with the regulars. I am not pissed with the new DMB advocates. I do think it's a shame that vocal proponents on both sides have turned this into the "my musical taste is better than yours" debate.

There should be more inventive name-calling and teasing and less chastizing. Humor brings people together.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 June 2003 16:18 (twenty years ago) link

Actually I never called Ned in particular out, tho I was somewhat frustrated by the "we all have different tastes but MINE are better" act becuz it seemed to cut off any possible discussion about DMB rather smugly and rilly was just a more articulate version of the more irritating things coming from the DMB hordes (more excusable there becuz they haven't wedded themselves to this act through years of fine-tuning) and meanwhile tho the taunting and baiting from other quarters was what rilly frustrated me.

And y3ncey can eat a bag of stereotypical dicks. 50,000 DMB fans might be wrong but they're sure more interesting than corny indie fucks like you.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 9 June 2003 16:39 (twenty years ago) link

how am i a corny indie fuck sterling??? how many dmb shows have you been to?

Why do you think we throw stuff at you?

You own all our cd's- you're gay, you're gay
You own all our 7"s- you're gay, you're gay
You bought all our t-shirts- you're gay, you're gay
You go to all our shows- you're gay, you're gay

[Chorus:] All our fans are gay [x4]

You think you know what we are singing about- you're wrong
You think we care about the underground- you're wrong
You think we won't fuck up your club- you're wrong
You think we care if you like us- you're wrong

[Chorus]

If we're nice to you, it's because we're broke
Or unless you got some drugs to smoke
When the drugs are gone, then we are too
Then we'll go back to making fun of you

[Fan voice:] "But I've supported you guys for so long"
FAGGOT!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 June 2003 16:46 (twenty years ago) link

The real fans don't go to shows.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 9 June 2003 16:53 (twenty years ago) link

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 9 June 2003 16:54 (twenty years ago) link

Technotronic is better than Dave Matthews on the strength of 'Pump Up The Jam' alone

Millar (Millar), Monday, 9 June 2003 19:30 (twenty years ago) link

Yes blount once you find the quote where I cop to trading guns to crazy right-wing strongmen under the table then it will be just like reagan.

Not sure that's what's meant by "jam band," Millar, but run with that thought!

Further evidence that Custos Epsilon is truly deserving of the title, LORD. SALUT!

Actually, I kinda sorta stole that bit from George Carlin.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 9 June 2003 19:44 (twenty years ago) link

pedantic

Marien, Monday, 9 June 2003 23:04 (twenty years ago) link

That doesn't change the fact that its a very good question.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 01:10 (twenty years ago) link

I was going to make an argument about why all the people talking shit about someone elses music are fucking lamers, but I decided that it was a waste of time. Go fuck yourselves and come back when you've actually accomplished something important.
