I don't see how that's different from any other form of entertainment tbh, they all require tons and tons of work to do well

musical theater people are just more self-righteous and hammy about it

The one musical I stan for unreservedly is "Annie." That could be down to childhood nostalgia, but if I'm near a TV and it's on I will set everything aside to re-watch it.

Crazy Eddie & Jesus the Kid (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 2 October 2016 02:54 (seven years ago) link

it took stalinesque political skill to avoid being assigned any job on the musical of 9 to 5 my theater's doing this fall, but as documented in the mary poppins thread i did get happily caught up in that one last year. no idea what the 9 to 5 musical's like but suspect it won't produce quite as many delighted, weeping children.

Yeah, can't wait to see what celebrated champion of women Alec Baldwin does

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 8 October 2016 14:21 (seven years ago) link

Ha! I actually thought about that too. Probably some too-close-to-home shit for him.

I don't give a shit about Hamilton but he was good. Really weird how different he looks without that stache though.

Am I hallucinating or did 21 Pilots do a lame, 1970s sounding white reggae song?

"raw buttin' these toilet seats" (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 10 October 2016 19:55 (seven years ago) link

i skipped past them bcz i am old & they looked annoying

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 11 October 2016 01:07 (seven years ago) link

Good advice, I watched it as it was broadcast and didn't walk away and get a drink like I should've.

"raw buttin' these toilet seats" (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 11 October 2016 07:06 (seven years ago) link

Their songs are usually poetry-based (written by Joseph and Dun);[61] Joseph has stated that when poetry is too long, he needs to start rapping to fit the lyrics in.

millennials really don't understand what editing is

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Tuesday, 11 October 2016 13:42 (seven years ago) link

having never seen nor heard hamilton the fact that the songs were rewrites from that didn't resonate with me but it was still really good.

akm, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 13:49 (seven years ago) link

His 'never gon be president now' is from when Hamilton's scandalous Reynolds pamphlet was published, detailing his extramarital affair. It was a pretty perfect moment.

can't believe i never got to see this with daveed

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 18:22 (seven years ago) link

thought this was a really woeful episode. and for a broadway star miranda was surprisingly poor in the sketches - usually find that people with that musical theatre background are well suited for cameo appearances in comedy but I found him surprisingly poor. less said about the broadway rapping elements the better as far as I'm concerned.

but the main problem with this episode: the writing was garbage. even the trump/clinton wasn't all that great and with that cast and the week's events that should really be a slam dunk.

ælərdaɪs (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 11 October 2016 19:13 (seven years ago) link

the writing on this show has been garbage since the new cast came in. which is too bad, cuz I like the new cast a lot! but it seems like they never have anything to work with

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 19:16 (seven years ago) link

yeah i like a lot of the cast and sometimes they make it worth watching, unfortunately the sketch's are often so poor there's no saving them.

ælərdaɪs (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 11 October 2016 19:17 (seven years ago) link

I don't think Lin-Manuel considers himself a particularly good rapper, when he free style battled on Fallon against Black Thought his response was 'why am I here?' He is a pretty good writer, though, and his monologue had some great lines. On the election

The way these grand-standing candidates be talkin’
They’re just a tweet away from facing off in Weehawken
They keep brawlin’, D and RNC keep fallin’
I like it better when it’s Kate McKinnon v. Baldwin

That's good writing to me? It seemed to me the show didn't know where to go with him, though.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 19:22 (seven years ago) link

The one where the guy phoned his mom was pretty sweet.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 19:22 (seven years ago) link

CHONK!

Lawsonomy Domine (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 16 October 2016 08:34 (seven years ago) link

this was a good episode most of the way through

akm, Monday, 17 October 2016 13:17 (seven years ago) link

Better than the Lin-Manuel episode;

curmudgeon, Monday, 17 October 2016 16:11 (seven years ago) link

Some good stuff near the beginning but really petered out by the end.

dan selzer, Monday, 17 October 2016 17:00 (seven years ago) link

The lampooning of the second debate had a really calming effect on me. It was so awful and cruel, to see it lampooned seemed relaxing.

Frederik B, Monday, 17 October 2016 17:07 (seven years ago) link

thought this was a pretty awful episode again but much better than the miranda episode. nadir for me was the robot sketch, which was just excruciating. chonk definitely the highlight of the show, and weekend update wasn't too bad - not a huge fan of jost and che in general.

why do i keep watching this show? haha.

*-* (jim in vancouver), Monday, 17 October 2016 17:35 (seven years ago) link

i liked the robot sketch. I liked the hamster sketch at the end too.

akm, Monday, 17 October 2016 17:56 (seven years ago) link

I hated the robot and hamster sketches!

Chonk was amazing agreed.

dan selzer, Monday, 17 October 2016 19:50 (seven years ago) link

whats this i hear about an angry whopper is a good line

johnny crunch, Monday, 17 October 2016 23:28 (seven years ago) link

I didn't laugh out loud much but I really did love that bizarre clusterfuck of a sketch, had it aired later it'd be an all-time 5-to-1 classic

a simba man (Will M.), Monday, 17 October 2016 23:31 (seven years ago) link

Just watched Chonk, and it's funny, but if that was the highlight...

rip van wanko, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 00:19 (seven years ago) link

It was. But agree with Will that the limo sketch should've been later, it would've capitalized on that weirdo energy they get around that time. Sometimes.

Lawsonomy Domine (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 00:29 (seven years ago) link

writers room really seemed to think ken bone was the big story of the week

carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 00:34 (seven years ago) link

The limo sketch would've been better if Kevin Roberts showed up

I know hoes that know Ali Farka Toure (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 00:38 (seven years ago) link

Truth.

Lawsonomy Domine (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 00:51 (seven years ago) link

thehamster sketch reminded me of early SNL; where it wasn't 'funny' so much as, well, here's a concept: what if who's afraid of virgina woolfe was played by hamsters? Ok, let's build a whole bunch of props and a set to support this dumb idea.

akm, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 02:23 (seven years ago) link

hamster sketch was really well done i thought. only highlight of the show for me. acting really sold it.

rip my mensches (s.clover), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 06:06 (seven years ago) link

The sink was pretty good as well. And the short film - not so much the sketch, though Vanessa Bayer was good, but the short film itself. This season has been pretty weird at times. Shame about the live sketches, they're mostly rubbish, but a lot of good stuff around the margins.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 12:07 (seven years ago) link

Vanessa Bayer on Weekend Update was great

¶ (DJP), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 15:04 (seven years ago) link

I love that bit but like so many it's getting a bit tired.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 15:06 (seven years ago) link

I have megacrush on Vanessa Bayer

rip van wanko, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 15:09 (seven years ago) link

Back of the line, pal

But really that character she did on WU is so perfect.
