another reason that i am bummed about the headphone jack is that i plug in my phone to my wired receiver all the time

marcos, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 13:53 (seven years ago) link

but yeah, feels like headphones have become disposable garbage products ppl expect to replace

It's actually been going the other way with headphones -- sales at the high end have been increasing for years now. I think that's one of the reasons there's been so much complaining about the loss of the headphone jack: lots of people have very expensive headphones that don't work directly with the iPhone anymore.

i'm saying if apple's going to replace something so ubiquitous it needs to meet expectations that the replacement won't be worse than what they had

Not to defend Apple, as I'm not happy with the missing jack either, but to be fair the adapter isn't "the replacement" -- wireless and Lightning are the replacement; I'm sure they consider the adapter a temporary bridge for people not ready to make the leap yet.

definitely curious to see what sales #'s are like -- preorders were apparently multiples of past years at certain carriers, but lines were short at stores.

high end users are also the type of people who carry around a portable DAC/amplifier xp

, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 14:30 (seven years ago) link

FWIW The Wirecutter finds no difference in sound with the adapter, but did confirm problems with remotes/mics after a period of inactivity through the adapter.

lol I have a USB DAC that I put between my computer and my external computer speakers.

xp yes sales at high end have increased but also low end have become completely commoditized and are not irrelevant.

personally i don't understand how mini-bluetooth speakers became so ubiquitous, but everywhere i go it's like those and shitty skullcandy earbuds

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 18:00 (seven years ago) link

no different than the boombox from 20-30 years ago, just a lot smaller and cheaper and more convenient

Spottie, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 19:08 (seven years ago) link

siri on mac might be good but i will never know cause i have a mini innit

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 19:44 (seven years ago) link

After a few hours with my new phone, I love the new button/not a button.

Jeff, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 19:53 (seven years ago) link

*quietly whispers* me too

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 20:00 (seven years ago) link

I never use the Bluetooth speakers the way they are advertised (like, a bunch of people partying around a sprinkler in a park or something), but it's convenient to have something I can put in any room of the house and pair with my phone easily, like if I want to put on music while doing the dishes or for my kids in the bedroom. I had a JBL which sounded pretty good and then it broke when it fell so I got some random brand with high marks for like $40 on Prime Day and it sounds pretty good, I can't even remember what it's called.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

i have a JBL one, my favorite thing is the little drawstring loop on it so i can hang it up and out of the way of potential spillage

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 20:18 (seven years ago) link

heck yeah

I impulse bought a bluetooth speaker (I own one at home, already, but it's bigger and not waterproof) when I was traveling out of one of those airport electronics vending machines. Mostly because I was very enthused about buying something out of a Best Buy vending machine and it was on sale (no more expensive than a real store despite being in an airport). That little fucker is waterproof and I have it hanging in my bathroom, sometimes in the actual shower! It's actually pretty sweet.

I'd be down with taking it to a picnic or whatever. I've used it outside while grilling.

also I had a cheap place I was staying on vacation, basically a college residence hall that rents out rooms like a motel, and it was better than most hotel radio things I've used

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 21:17 (seven years ago) link

I have a 7+ and already its obvious that the camera is amazing as is the screen.

Also obvious is that I've never noticed how often I watch movies on my phone when the battery is dying. Not being able to charge and listen is a bigger deal than I imagined.

stet, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 22:27 (seven years ago) link

Gotta get that double dingle dongle

calstars, Thursday, 22 September 2016 00:10 (seven years ago) link

calstars, Thursday, 22 September 2016 00:12 (seven years ago) link

Works best on a laptop or desktop

calstars, Thursday, 22 September 2016 00:13 (seven years ago) link

Elvis Telecom otm, I installed Sierra and recovered approx 25GB of space

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 22 September 2016 07:20 (seven years ago) link

so I bought the iPhone se and I love apple again

Clay, Thursday, 22 September 2016 07:46 (seven years ago) link

So Sierra won't work on my 2009 MBP - quite a blow to be officially declared outdated.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 22 September 2016 14:36 (seven years ago) link

seriously considering the SE when I do finally get a new phone, although afraid I'll have trouble going back to the smaller screen

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Thursday, 22 September 2016 14:37 (seven years ago) link

dropped by the apple store, the haptic feedback feels fine/good, cameras are great, didn't feel the need to upgrade but if i did it would be to the 7+ for its big cameras!!

, Thursday, 22 September 2016 15:12 (seven years ago) link

i am probably gonna drop € for the SE at some point next week. then put an SSD in my 2011 Mini and i'll basically be good for another 5 years

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 22 September 2016 17:12 (seven years ago) link

the SE was cheaper in £. so happy to be able to use my thumbprint to open finally!

and i can put it on its side to watch baseball! TRY THAT IPHONE 7

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 25 September 2016 00:01 (seven years ago) link

I can recommend the 7 plus? It's perfection in every wa3

calstars, Sunday, 25 September 2016 00:57 (seven years ago) link

Raise and wake + fingerprint = u can unlock w/out pressing any physical buttons !

calstars, Sunday, 25 September 2016 00:58 (seven years ago) link

In every wa3!

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Sunday, 25 September 2016 01:19 (seven years ago) link

almost wish I got the plus for pics but I am a happy man

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Sunday, 25 September 2016 03:06 (seven years ago) link

Ha ha, charade you are?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 16:56 (seven years ago) link

three weeks pass...

so who has an SE and should i get one

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 20 October 2016 12:24 (seven years ago) link

I have the 64GB model. You should get one. It's basically a 6 in a 5's body.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 20 October 2016 13:45 (seven years ago) link

(That's also what the ladies say about me, coincidentally)

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 20 October 2016 13:46 (seven years ago) link

how's the battery life?

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:01 (seven years ago) link

yeah I'm also thinking about getting the 64GB SE. Maybe tonight, in fact.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:13 (seven years ago) link

way better than my 5, but that's maybe because it's new idk.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:46 (seven years ago) link

well i've got a 3+ year old 5 that requires sporadic charging throughout the day, regardless of how it's been used. and if it gets even a little cold outside, it'll just suddenly run out of batteries. if i try to do anything with it in an area with poor reception (say, the basement of the hospital), it'll drop 20-30% of charge in the span of a few minutes. using the camera on anything less than 70% runs the risk of sudden death.

so really any improvement would be good

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:07 (seven years ago) link

An SE will be a big improvement, do it.

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:08 (seven years ago) link

yall are convincing me -- was poised to jump ship to the new google phones but they are just a little too pricey

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:10 (seven years ago) link

Apple still isn't selling your eternal soul to advertisers fwiw

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:20 (seven years ago) link

this is true

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:22 (seven years ago) link

I went from a 5 to an SE a month ago

A+++ would bang again

||||||||, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:53 (seven years ago) link

whoa do newer apple phones not suffer big battery drain when the mobile network is weak? b/c my 5-experience matches gbx's in that regard.

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:54 (seven years ago) link

I think the radios are better so you get better signal which means it's less of an issue

||||||||, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:15 (seven years ago) link

aw man i just went to the verizon store and...i think i like the 7? and also the pixel

:-/

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 20 October 2016 20:00 (seven years ago) link
