johnny crunch, Friday, 9 September 2016 19:41 (seven years ago) link

great comeback, nole has to hold this or gael will serve for 5-5!

johnny crunch, Friday, 9 September 2016 19:55 (seven years ago) link

so just caught the end of djokovic/monfils and apparently something was weird about it and the commentators were bagging on monfils for being unprofessional but i don't really "get" tennis so i don't know what happened

i only caught the last couple of points of the set, but my guess is that once monfils fell behind he started playing purposefully erratically, basically tanking the set, in order to 1) conserve energy and/or 2) serve first in the second set

OMFG what a point

he's playing very...casually. his shot selection has been pretty bizarre. even for him!

tennis is exciting!

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2016 20:09 (seven years ago) link

lol otm

johnny crunch, Friday, 9 September 2016 20:16 (seven years ago) link

it's clear that monfils feels he needs to junk up the match a little because he knows he'll never outslug djokovic from the baseline (he's something like 0-12 in his career against him), but i'm not sure djokovic is the kind of player these little chip shots are going to work against. he's just too solid and too mentally strong

omg this lil fans that those ppl had plugged into their phones

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2016 20:23 (seven years ago) link

mcenroe is really mad an monfils, lol

im not listening but mcenroe is terrible w things like this, he was the same way w krygios

johnny crunch, Friday, 9 September 2016 20:28 (seven years ago) link

djokovic just demoralizes ppl

johnny crunch, Friday, 9 September 2016 20:28 (seven years ago) link

now gael is limping....lol

i love monfils but...

monfils showing some life!

don't tell me gbx stopped watching!

can't watch rn but yes to the mcenroe stuff. he gets relentlessly negative some matches. it gets to be a bit much. during the nole-dimitrov it was obvious cliff was getting annoyed with it too in the booth. kept pulling him back to center.

andrew m., Friday, 9 September 2016 21:04 (seven years ago) link

oh i'm watching doggy

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2016 21:04 (seven years ago) link

this is the most monfils set of all sets

like sometimes he just doesn't give a shit? i'm having a tough time following without sound

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2016 21:08 (seven years ago) link

he does do that a lot, but he's been pretty focused this set! i mean the general roller coaster nature of the set, the bizarre decision to serve and volley on SECOND SERVES against the best returner of all time, the drop shots, the court coverage, the crazy angles...this is what makes him so exciting to watch

i'm pulling for him

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2016 21:13 (seven years ago) link

also, i am now noticing for the first time something that dfw pointed out in one of his tennis essays: the pros really do have hypertrophic serving/favored arms!

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2016 21:14 (seven years ago) link

oh yeah they're huge, any semi-serious player will have hypertrophic forearm muscles but the pros, if you ever see them in person, are alien-like

monfils is such a ham

what in the heck

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2016 21:27 (seven years ago) link

uh oh, novak calling the trainer now

mcenroe is still bagging on monfils!

there's no quit in this young man

has been a battle

mookieproof, Saturday, 10 September 2016 01:15 (seven years ago) link

i meant 10, but still

mookieproof, Saturday, 10 September 2016 01:16 (seven years ago) link

stan/novak is the most boring semi result :(

have you ever even read The Drudge Report? Have you gone on Stormfron (k3vin k.), Saturday, 10 September 2016 04:39 (seven years ago) link

who doesn't think kerber will win the third set 6-1 or something

imago, Saturday, 10 September 2016 21:47 (seven years ago) link

I don't

mookieproof, Saturday, 10 September 2016 21:50 (seven years ago) link

hmm you're right

imago, Saturday, 10 September 2016 21:55 (seven years ago) link

was some wishful thinking tbh, pliskova has a really, really dull game

imago, Saturday, 10 September 2016 22:00 (seven years ago) link

the fuck are these unforced errors

imago, Saturday, 10 September 2016 22:03 (seven years ago) link

this is more like it, brilliant hold

imago, Saturday, 10 September 2016 22:16 (seven years ago) link

and there's the collapse. took longer than i thought, but the way pliskova celebrated getting to 4-4 as if she'd won the whole thing...didn't get another point

imago, Saturday, 10 September 2016 22:28 (seven years ago) link
