I don't know if NickB is still wanting to do the "Genesis + solo" poll at some point? I was hoping that "solo" would encompass literally *everything* any of them did, so you could vote for, say, The Knife and Sussudio and Over My Shoulder on the same ballot.

i think you should go ahead and run Stooges/Iggy Pop Moka as it is the only one without a name attached to it. it also got bumped down the line as flopson bailed on it. some dude is going to do Hendrix, i will do Talking Heads but not until February of 2017. flappy bird is doing Animal Collective he just doesn't know it yet. i'm also going to probably drop Blondie and do The Jesus and Mary Chain instead. If MBV goes then Joy Division should also get a poll. what fun we can have...

Bee OK, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 23:48 (seven years ago) link

Ismael Klata reached out to me about doing George Michael. i think he should go ahead and open up that poll!

Bee OK, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 23:51 (seven years ago) link

I could start the wu one as early as next week

Spottie, Thursday, 8 September 2016 00:03 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I'd love to do the Stooges/Iggy Pop one. I go on a Stooges and Cramps binge every year when the summer dies.

Oooh we don't have a Cramps poll in line either!? How? Sign me up for that one too. I don't know if there's enough interest in ILM for them but I love them.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 8 September 2016 01:42 (seven years ago) link

I love The Cramps, but mostly the first handful of years rather than all the later years. My ballot would be boring.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 8 September 2016 02:42 (seven years ago) link

I've been summoned. I'll put the George Michael poll up later today. I've got a short window where this is possible, so let's get on with it.

Good grief

Testing for the stooges poll. Stealing the look from Jarmusch's documentary because I like how it looks:

looks great.

Definitely Elvis. Most people would benifit from delving into that discography.

Seconded this would be fun

Elvis is long due. Should've been one of the first polls, him and chuck berry are the first musicians I think of when trying to define an 'American' sound.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 9 September 2016 09:43 (seven years ago) link

Chuck Berry also doesn't have a poll in line it seems! How in the hell did we get a Timbaland poll before an Elvis and Chuck Berry poll!?

forgot about this and too busy to do it for the next couple of months. if anyone else wants to run with it in the meantime then go for it. but yes, had hoped to include everything from 'watcher of the skies' to 'easy lover' to 'don't give up' etc

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Friday, 9 September 2016 09:56 (seven years ago) link

my only wish is that if you want to run the poll, you need to call the voting thread 'get 'em in by friday'

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Friday, 9 September 2016 09:58 (seven years ago) link

How in the hell did we get a Timbaland poll before an Elvis and Chuck Berry poll!?

this is ILX; the legacy of popist iconoclasm persists even through this consolidatory canon-building phase

ogmor, Friday, 9 September 2016 10:24 (seven years ago) link

Also, most of us aren't 60 years old.

Tuomas, Friday, 9 September 2016 11:15 (seven years ago) link

Also, ilx has a small but dedicated hiking community.

how's life, Friday, 9 September 2016 11:32 (seven years ago) link

Somewhere upthread I mused that Chuck, and this might apply to Elvis also, may not really be ideal for the format/board, since their important work is primarily singles-based so you're really just ranking the greatest hits. The "Great Twenty-Eight" radio button thread is pretty good!

But there is something to RANKING the hits rather than just doing an OPO, and maybe some folks would take the opportunity to dig into the albums, or lesser-known singles. Finally, "The Broken Arrow" gets its due! Ahhh, fuck it, put Chuck in the queue - I'd be down to run that poll, Moka, unless you want it.

Silence, followed by unintelligible stammering. (Doctor Casino), Friday, 9 September 2016 13:08 (seven years ago) link

Lawdy Miss Clawdy it's time for an Elvis Presley poll.

Why do you have to be 60 to like rock n roll?

How?
Just interested. I don't see age as a prohibitive factor in appreciating music. I was about 8 when I first heard Elvis and 10 when way down came out and he literally went way on down.

For bodies we are ready to build pyramids (wtev), Friday, 9 September 2016 15:20 (seven years ago) link

i agree, i was just joking. An Elvis poll would be good so I could learn about all the early elvis on Sun Records. I only really know the big hits

Portishead, Massive Attack

It might make more sense to do a 'Bristol Sound' poll than do these acts separately (especially considering their relatively thin discographies).

chap, Friday, 9 September 2016 15:33 (seven years ago) link

that would be fun

Who'd be in, who'd be out though? Are we including the Third Eye Foundation/Crescent/Flying Saucer Attack/Amp/Movietone Bristol scene? I think you have to.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 9 September 2016 16:02 (seven years ago) link

Not sure I see those bands necessarily being connected to Massive Attack other than geographically, could make a stronger argument for including Neneh, Smith & Mighty, Fresh Four, Krust, Roni Size, Kosheen etc

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Friday, 9 September 2016 16:08 (seven years ago) link

Don't get me wrong I love Timbaland but I still feel Elvis is... well, he's Elvis. You don't have to be 60 years old to love the man. Also if the argument for not having an Elvis poll is because it's 'old people' music then I don't know how half of these polls got made. You're old ILMz

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 9 September 2016 19:34 (seven years ago) link

Also the 'timbaland' signature sound started in 1996. Assuming you were 20 in 1996 you're 40 now so Timbaland is also old, dad music.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 9 September 2016 19:40 (seven years ago) link

We need a Wire poll. I will be more than happy to run that.

I dunno, if I were to do it I might keep it simple and limited to Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky if that sounds at all justifiable? Maybe Wild Bunch as well?

This is the reason an Elvis poll should be of the whole catalogue not just "the hits". Lots of gems tucked away.

3 P albums, 3 MA albums, 2-3 Tricky (counting Nearly God), over which there are about 100 songs? Sounds doable.

write sed fread (Leee), Thursday, 15 September 2016 17:47 (seven years ago) link

There are 5 MA albums!

chap, Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:33 (seven years ago) link

far more than 2-3 tricky albums, too

a simba man (Will M.), Thursday, 15 September 2016 19:02 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I mean ones that would realistically get a significant number of votes!

write sed fread (Leee), Thursday, 15 September 2016 21:43 (seven years ago) link

I think a few songs off Heligoland could do alright.

chap, Thursday, 15 September 2016 21:52 (seven years ago) link

Hey, I like the Hope Sandoval song! I was taking a very conservatively estimating the minimum of songs we'd have in the pool.

write sed fread (Leee), Thursday, 15 September 2016 21:59 (seven years ago) link

Which one? I could conceivably vote for both Paradise Circus and The Spoils (even though the latter is only a few weeks old).

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 15 September 2016 22:02 (seven years ago) link

Oh is there a new one?? "Paradise Circus" obviously is the one I like.

You're missing out, I think the EP and couple of songs from the upcoming album that they've released so far are my favorite ones since Mezzanine.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 16 September 2016 14:30 (seven years ago) link

I think they're also a proper band again and Daddy G and Mushroom are back, don't quote me on that.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 16 September 2016 14:33 (seven years ago) link

Daddy G has been back since Heligoland hasn't he?

I just looked at credits for this year's releases and it turns out Ritual Spirit is only 3D and The Spoils is only Daddy G, i hadn't realised.

a bit of a tangent though

ufo, Friday, 16 September 2016 15:03 (seven years ago) link

Yeah just checked that's dissapointing. But well at least Tricky's back as a collaborator in two songs?

Herbie Hancock also credited? Is it a sample?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 16 September 2016 18:32 (seven years ago) link

Anyhoo back to this thread; I agree a Bristol trip hop poll would be great but only including Tricky, Portishead and MA. A full genre poll would take too much time to listen. Tricky's catalogue alone is actually extensive and you have to do digging to find the actual gems, there's many crap, but there's at least an interesting track per album.

I like Nearly God better than Maxinquaye... maybe I overplayed it too much so I prefer the former when I'm in Tricky mood.
