It's good now

I'm super jazzed to annoy my friends with iMessage stickers and embeds and whatever other bullshit they add

The only reason I've stayed wedded to iPhone is bc I spend an inordinate amount of time composing music/making synth patches on it, and androids os has inherent latency issues. Android please fix your latency issues before I have to face this jackless future.

I wish you could see my home. It's... it's so... exciting (Jon not Jon), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:55 (seven years ago) link

Despite a lot of abuse (thrown in bags, the device end is often dangling on to my unswept floor, the cat has been playing with one of them) I've had zero lightning cables die

btw the new iMessage is very good imo, although I might be biased in that it auto-expands twitter urls into the little tweet summary which is what I want

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:59 (seven years ago) link

i have had zero lightning cables die, but i somehow short out/break approx 2 pairs of earbuds per year, bring on the shiny evil future i say

I've had a lot more wired headphones die than I have lightening cables.

Jeff, Friday, 2 September 2016 21:04 (seven years ago) link

the headphone jack thing is my dealbreaker.

this plus the obstinately high cost of apple stuff. i'm breaking an eight year streak and jumping to android in a couple of months. phones like the 6p and oneplus 3 are great value, and marshmallow and nougat are very very good (ios 9 still can't do copy & paste properly ffs).

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 2 September 2016 23:07 (seven years ago) link

I've had a lot more wired headphones die than I have lightening cables.

but at least we have the choice for now. it's fine for apple to say "wireless is better, we did this thing with a locked-off wireless standard OH AND LOOK we just happen to own an overpriced headphone brand" but i still want to be able to plug in my speakers and devices that'll last another few years.

it's hard to see a lot of this as anything other than desperate plays to keep apple's share price insanely high. is anyone asking for massively thin phones? not really. do people hate headphone cables? sure, but not so much as to dive into (what i assume will be) a tightly controlled proprietary spec that will inflate the cost of wireless headphones (cf. certified lightning cables v microusb cables).

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 2 September 2016 23:18 (seven years ago) link

that said these things will fly off shelves

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 2 September 2016 23:19 (seven years ago) link

people do want thinner phones tho

Spottie, Friday, 2 September 2016 23:21 (seven years ago) link

some always will, but a lot of people are happy with thin enough, and many would prefer things like a few hours' more battery or a headphone jack

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 2 September 2016 23:35 (seven years ago) link

listened to music on my phone the whole work day the other day using headphones that were not connected to my phone, despite being from the 90s

hope apple has a lil wireless dongle like the bluetooth one I have, it's pretty sweet

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Friday, 2 September 2016 23:54 (seven years ago) link

I get the need for having headphones that don't need batteries and work instantly w/out pairing or w/e but if I had a nickel for every time I moved my head the wrong way and my phone flew off the desk, or I got my headphones cable stuck on my desk chair armrest and ripped them out of my ears, I would have a few sodas now

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Friday, 2 September 2016 23:56 (seven years ago) link

Latency is my fear. I like to use my iPhone for music-making, and I'm nervous this is gonna screw it up. Plus I don't want more dongles. It's a total joke how Apple thinks they're these visionaries, removing connectors, liberating us all from wires, when the reality is that now everyone has to have all these docks and dongles.

rly?? They have become thin enough to be a nuisance at this point; it seems v strange that people would prioritize increased thinness (on an already extremely thin product) over improved battery life or other features. Like I put a case on mine deliberately to make it thicker.

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 6 September 2016 15:06 (seven years ago) link

I wouldn't mind a bit thinner. Purely vanity, I still get the phone outline in my pants pocket.

Jeff, Tuesday, 6 September 2016 15:13 (seven years ago) link

yeah, it's a phone in your pants pocket; at what thinness will a phone not give you an outline?

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 6 September 2016 15:23 (seven years ago) link

Just looking for less! Until we get to nothing in 2023.

Jeff, Tuesday, 6 September 2016 15:28 (seven years ago) link

Jeff's still in denial about his tight pants addiction. I'm here for you, buddy

also if you keep breaking amazon basics cables then get these https://www.amazon.com/iPhone-charger-Anker-Lightning-Certified/dp/B00K4VQZCM/ref=sr_1_11?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1472833328&sr=1-11. they're the ones wirecutter recommended based on a ridiculous teardown of the construction. they're the same price as amazon basics.

lol these look like they were made in the same factory

, Tuesday, 6 September 2016 16:25 (seven years ago) link

I've had both, the anker ones are nice

idk if "same factory" means anything when some of the factories are buildings the size of a small town

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 6 September 2016 16:38 (seven years ago) link

A bit of crow to eat but I'm beginning to suspect my problem with cables was partly just that the charging port needed cleaning, and maybe the apple cables are just slightly more conductive or something so that they weren't affected as bad by all the dirt in there.

are you trying to chinasplain me

, Tuesday, 6 September 2016 17:25 (seven years ago) link

I'm all for whatever Apple tells me to do with headphones, I'll just comply. But my biggest problem is their earbuds/pods/whatever never fit in my ears. They just all fall out within about 3 seconds, completely useless. I'd gladly use them if they had some interchangeable sizes.

Jeff, Tuesday, 6 September 2016 18:05 (seven years ago) link

i'm all about the earphones with comply foam tips. it's kind of a standard?

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 6 September 2016 18:10 (seven years ago) link

totally chinasplaining at 龜 now, going to get demolished

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 6 September 2016 18:10 (seven years ago) link

The only kind of earbuds that stay in for me are the workout kind with the rubber tips and earclip thingies.

airpods look like somthing that will totally get lost withi n5 minutes of oepning the box

, Tuesday, 6 September 2016 18:14 (seven years ago) link

They are never to be removed from your ears.

Alba, Tuesday, 6 September 2016 18:18 (seven years ago) link

really just throw one of them in the trash right out of the box

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 6 September 2016 18:18 (seven years ago) link

Comply foams work really well but they go stale more rapidly than I would like. And get gross well in advance of that.

When I do wear buds I use those silicone tips with the three flanges but I cut off the littlest end flange.

the etymotics ones, also very good

with my headphones buying problem I should start taking bets on how many new headphones I buy now. urgh.

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 14:52 (seven years ago) link

today's the day they finally release the apple watch that turns your thumb and pinky into a phone receiver

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 14:55 (seven years ago) link

i will happily buy older iphone models as long as apple continues to sell them but as soon as they are gone and only jack-less iphones are available i am out

marcos, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 15:00 (seven years ago) link

Hmm maybe I'll just get a reduced price 6S instead of a 7. Need to see what it has.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 15:03 (seven years ago) link

This is def one of those moments where I'm not sure if I *think* the no-headphone-jack thing is going to hurt Apple or I just want it to.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 15:04 (seven years ago) link

Like I have been wrong about them so many times before so IDK.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 15:04 (seven years ago) link

Jason Snell is right about the adaptor bit: $29 if they're saying "fuck you", $19 if they know this is shit, in the box if they're bricking it

stet, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 15:17 (seven years ago) link

who is jason snell and why are these arbitrary numbers important

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 15:19 (seven years ago) link

took me a second to parse that sentence, "bricking" next to a reference to an electronic device spins some different wheels in my brain

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 15:20 (seven years ago) link

here is your new iPhone, we pre-bricked it for you. it is an unusable, unrestorable lump.

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 15:21 (seven years ago) link

jason snell is former macuser editor now writes an electronic publication at sixcolors.org or something. those prices are typical Apple adapter tiers for "necessary because we yanked a vital port" and "why are you still using this port you dicks?"

stet, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 15:33 (seven years ago) link

the ethernet adapter is $29, kind of lines up w/theory

btw if you're stuck in a place where you have to use a wired connection and are a masochist, the newer "camera connection kit" (pretty bullshit they still sell it as this) lets you run powered usb devices connected to an iPad, namely the usb ethernet adapter
