exactly same thing happened to me - it was still under warranty so Apple just gave me a new one

my 5 (not S) finally stopped sending audio to the ear speaker so i have to either have headphones plugged in or use speakerphone :(

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 2 September 2016 10:27 (seven years ago) link

i have the option to update my iPhone 6 to the 7 this fall, but 7's looking like a pretty incremental upgrade. essentially a 6S v1.5. may just wait until fall 2017 when the big redesign is supposed to happen.

circa1916, Friday, 2 September 2016 12:16 (seven years ago) link

i assume no updates to the SE

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 2 September 2016 12:25 (seven years ago) link

which is what i would want

tbh i am considering going featurephone, and using my speakerless iphone as an ipod touch.

is apple still going to be dumb and get rid of the headphone jack

marcos, Friday, 2 September 2016 13:52 (seven years ago) link

yes.

figure they'll one day take off the volume switch, make you adjust it from inside the OS or on your Beats cord.

Via Siri.

schwantz, Friday, 2 September 2016 15:02 (seven years ago) link

is the jack going away with the 7 or with the one after that?

So will they be offering some kind of wonky adapter for 1/8 inch audio connectors? Trying to figure out how that's going to look/work coming out of a single lightning jack. Honestly I hate the lightning cable so much -- having an exposed connector is the stupidest shit ever and I've had to throw out tons of cables, including "apple-licensed" ones, because they corrode so easily.

I am definitely not buying new lightning adapter headphones, nor am I going to get Bluetooth headphones -- fuck having another device to charge.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Friday, 2 September 2016 15:43 (seven years ago) link

maybe they'll make you have to use a apple watch to listen to music (do those dumb watches have headphone jacks, I assume so)

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 2 September 2016 15:46 (seven years ago) link

that's the idea. they don't want you to use a different wire. they want you to stop using wires.

what is an "exposed connector"?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 2 September 2016 15:46 (seven years ago) link

that was xp

Trying to figure out how that's going to look/work coming out of a single lightning jack.

Think of it as attaching to the end of the cable, not the iPhone.

I don't know the technical term, but on a lightning connector, the actual part of the connector that makes contact/conducts power and data is directly exposed, whereas in something like a USB cable it's shielded.

xp oh god that is awful. So you can't listen on headphones while charging?

I really am starting to think that the Company's product design is suffering without Jobs.

They'd better have at least improved battery life, I'm starting to require two full charges per 24 hours.

so like a headphone jack?

the headphone jack thing is my dealbreaker.

It's frustrating, because Android still totally sucks, but yeah - what's with all of the dongles?

schwantz, Friday, 2 September 2016 16:16 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, this seems to be the key drawback. Maybe Apple will do special headphones that let you daisy-chain to a power source, ha ha.

for whatever reason, headphone jacks seem to last decades and lightning cables last like a year. The Amazon Basics cables I bought stopped working in about 6 months.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:18 (seven years ago) link

I mainly use bluetooth headphones now, but yeah, charging sucks.

Alba, Friday, 2 September 2016 16:18 (seven years ago) link

tbf, as it is I sometimes just use a bluetooth speaker when I charge my phone because charging and headphones at the same time is already annoying. But at least a bluetooth speaker can stay plugged into the wall.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:19 (seven years ago) link

lightning cables get a lot of abuse (a ton more than regular USB which only get used in the home, and then only rarely). they're no more or less robust than what preceded them, or the micro usbs on android phones, etc. in my experience.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:23 (seven years ago) link

just saying this again: apple doesn't want you to switch to lightning headphones. they want you to stop using cables. they didn't get rid of floppy drives to encourage you to use zipdisk.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:23 (seven years ago) link

also if you keep breaking amazon basics cables then get these https://www.amazon.com/iPhone-charger-Anker-Lightning-Certified/dp/B00K4VQZCM/ref=sr_1_11?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1472833328&sr=1-11. they're the ones wirecutter recommended based on a ridiculous teardown of the construction. they're the same price as amazon basics.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:26 (seven years ago) link

ok but charging them in addition to charging the phone 1, 2x per day, is uncool

the wires on headphones do suck though, mine are always getting caught in turnstiles on public trans etc

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:27 (seven years ago) link

Apple also wants you to use icloud but I hate icloud.

The only reason I've stayed wedded to iPhone is bc I spend an inordinate amount of time composing music/making synth patches on it, and androids os has inherent latency issues. Android please fix your latency issues before I have to face this jackless future.

Despite a lot of abuse (thrown in bags, the device end is often dangling on to my unswept floor, the cat has been playing with one of them) I've had zero lightning cables die

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:59 (seven years ago) link

btw the new iMessage is very good imo, although I might be biased in that it auto-expands twitter urls into the little tweet summary which is what I want

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:59 (seven years ago) link

i have had zero lightning cables die, but i somehow short out/break approx 2 pairs of earbuds per year, bring on the shiny evil future i say

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 2 September 2016 21:01 (seven years ago) link

I've had a lot more wired headphones die than I have lightening cables.

Jeff, Friday, 2 September 2016 21:04 (seven years ago) link

the headphone jack thing is my dealbreaker.

this plus the obstinately high cost of apple stuff. i'm breaking an eight year streak and jumping to android in a couple of months. phones like the 6p and oneplus 3 are great value, and marshmallow and nougat are very very good (ios 9 still can't do copy & paste properly ffs).

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 2 September 2016 23:07 (seven years ago) link

I've had a lot more wired headphones die than I have lightening cables.

but at least we have the choice for now. it's fine for apple to say "wireless is better, we did this thing with a locked-off wireless standard OH AND LOOK we just happen to own an overpriced headphone brand" but i still want to be able to plug in my speakers and devices that'll last another few years.

it's hard to see a lot of this as anything other than desperate plays to keep apple's share price insanely high. is anyone asking for massively thin phones? not really. do people hate headphone cables? sure, but not so much as to dive into (what i assume will be) a tightly controlled proprietary spec that will inflate the cost of wireless headphones (cf. certified lightning cables v microusb cables).

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 2 September 2016 23:18 (seven years ago) link

that said these things will fly off shelves

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 2 September 2016 23:19 (seven years ago) link

people do want thinner phones tho

Spottie, Friday, 2 September 2016 23:21 (seven years ago) link

some always will, but a lot of people are happy with thin enough, and many would prefer things like a few hours' more battery or a headphone jack

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 2 September 2016 23:35 (seven years ago) link

listened to music on my phone the whole work day the other day using headphones that were not connected to my phone, despite being from the 90s

hope apple has a lil wireless dongle like the bluetooth one I have, it's pretty sweet

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Friday, 2 September 2016 23:54 (seven years ago) link

I get the need for having headphones that don't need batteries and work instantly w/out pairing or w/e but if I had a nickel for every time I moved my head the wrong way and my phone flew off the desk, or I got my headphones cable stuck on my desk chair armrest and ripped them out of my ears, I would have a few sodas now

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Friday, 2 September 2016 23:56 (seven years ago) link

Latency is my fear. I like to use my iPhone for music-making, and I'm nervous this is gonna screw it up. Plus I don't want more dongles. It's a total joke how Apple thinks they're these visionaries, removing connectors, liberating us all from wires, when the reality is that now everyone has to have all these docks and dongles.

rly?? They have become thin enough to be a nuisance at this point; it seems v strange that people would prioritize increased thinness (on an already extremely thin product) over improved battery life or other features. Like I put a case on mine deliberately to make it thicker.

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 6 September 2016 15:06 (seven years ago) link

I wouldn't mind a bit thinner. Purely vanity, I still get the phone outline in my pants pocket.

Jeff, Tuesday, 6 September 2016 15:13 (seven years ago) link

yeah, it's a phone in your pants pocket; at what thinness will a phone not give you an outline?
