Contrary to the track listing and clarified on subsequent releases (including The Masterplan), "I Am The Walrus" was not actually recorded at the Glasgow Cathouse, but at a conference for Sony music executives - the Gleaneagles Hotel Sony Seminar - who had gathered to hear Creation Records' new signings. Noel Gallagher stated that the band loved this particular live recording but were mortified to learn that it was made during a rehearsal at a corporate event. The band instead picked a venue from their tour schedule at which they had performed a similar sounding version, and added crowd noise taken from a Faces bootleg CD, in a bid to make it seem like an authentic tour recording.

I'm not surprised, tbqh. Imagine Liam singing it. Sounds good, doesn't it?

I'm very surprised, because it's one of Oasis' best singles packages of that period, with 'Underneath The Sky', 'Step Out' and their best cover version ('Cum On Feel The Noize') on the B-sides. I think 'Don't Look Back In Anger' is a miles better song than 'Wonderwall', too. Always did.

Having said that, though, the 'Wonderwall' single is also one of their better singles packages: 'Round Are Way', 'The Masterplan' and the full version of 'The Swamp Song' on the B-sides.

Those that voted for the 'Live Forever' single were probably voting for the song and not the single. Aside from the lead track, it doesn't have much else to offer.

In fact, seems to me that people generally got confused about this section of the poll.

Yeah, true, although "Cloudbusting" is there. (It's on my version of the DefMay CD)

Mark G, Friday, 26 August 2016 11:12 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, 'Cloudburst' has its fans but I've never really liked it, for me it didn't really have much about it that stuck in the cranium long after listening like Noel's best songs of the period.

I didn't vote in the singles poll but it's ridiculous that Don't Look Back in Anger didn't even place, being as that's their best song

Well, there is a stewards enquiry on tthat one thanks to:

Mark G, Friday, 26 August 2016 15:20 (seven years ago) link

I don't think it would be better with Liam singing, Noel's voice was a nice change at the time and I still prefer his voice.

nate woolls, Friday, 26 August 2016 15:44 (seven years ago) link

hum. I don't know, I don't really like Noel's voice. It's too mild and lacks personality.
whenever an oasis song happens to play on my spotify, if it's Noel, I skip it.
"don't look back" is ok, though.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 26 August 2016 15:50 (seven years ago) link

the only real flaw with the masterplan beyond the "i am the walrus" cover is how many songs are sung by noel. i guess he has a better voice traditionally but he mostly sounds mundanely bored, as opposed to liam's way more compelling idgaf bored

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 26 August 2016 16:21 (seven years ago) link

Liam has the sneer and the gravelly Lennon-esque grain. Noel's a much less distinctive singer. nonetheless he sings the two best songs on Morning Glory.
