I thot Baker Street was 80s and made the 80s list

flopson, Monday, 22 August 2016 19:29 (seven years ago) link

no, it was played to death in the '80s

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 22 August 2016 19:30 (seven years ago) link

I was up late late last night when the list went up and had a grand ol' time listening to all the tracks that I hadn't heard before. The top 50 (100?) was always going to be pretty predictable, but it's more fun to focus on the stuff that's new to you. Unless you're one of those people that knows all songs

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Monday, 22 August 2016 19:31 (seven years ago) link

p4k' view of the 70s def does not match mine especially their top 50 but the 70s is just so deep in general that yea it is really fun to hear some new things

given the high placing of "Fuck the Police" in their '80s list, it'd be kind of hypocritical if they started lauding Sting and co. now

oh yea i also missed waiting in vain

marcos, Monday, 22 August 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

Nitpicking aside, 10 years ago this list would've been all proto-punk/punk/post-punk songs with obligatory nods to Fela, P-Funk and Joni Mitchell.

ha that is still mostly what this list felt like to me

marcos, Monday, 22 August 2016 21:02 (seven years ago) link

ilx ran a 70s traxpoll in like 2004, wonder what it would look like now

imago, Monday, 22 August 2016 21:03 (seven years ago) link

apart from i feel love winning by a zillion points

(i mean, even i'd put it really high, and if i'm putting it really high so is everyone else)

imago, Monday, 22 August 2016 21:04 (seven years ago) link

2004 ilx and 2016 ilx are basically two different things. But I think you're right that I Feel Love would still have a good shot at #1.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 22 August 2016 21:08 (seven years ago) link

you ran the alt 70s album poll iirc? unfinished business perhaps

imago, Monday, 22 August 2016 21:10 (seven years ago) link

ooh this list reminded me that "summer madness" is such a gorgeous tune

marcos, Monday, 22 August 2016 21:12 (seven years ago) link

Summer Madness is amazing. I'm a dork who plays it really loudly on the first day of summer every year.

Mickey Mouse line aside, Life On Mars really hit me hard this past year. Mainly due to the chorus (minus the "is there life on maaaaaaaawwwws" part)

brimstead, Monday, 22 August 2016 22:16 (seven years ago) link

it's hard to imagine an unimpeachable list, but this one is far from terrible

dc, Monday, 22 August 2016 22:18 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, it isn't terrible, but then I notice several inclusions from a single artist and I think "why THIS and not THAT?" or "why so many from one artist when you left of ______?!"

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 22 August 2016 22:20 (seven years ago) link

Thankful that "Oh Bondage..." beat almost every other punk song, but then fucking Television (the greatest critical gaslighting job ever) shows up in the top 10.

Man, "Another Girl, Another Planet" didn't make the cut?

Besides the token nod to Big Star and "Surrender" no power-pop at all

My one surprise was no Richard & Linda Thompson, but then maybe that's just me.
Enjoyed the 'Dreaming' write-up. Also not so sure pop music was changed forever by 'I Wanna Be Your Lover'.

Yeah, no.

Wonder how it breaks down re the early-later '70s split, pre-and post-punk. Some big early-'70s names are missing--Randy Newman, Wings, Aretha Franklin, and the Move, as well as Badfinger, the Raspberries, Grin. No "Layla," no Beefheart, Fairport Convention, Richard Thompson, Meters, John Cale, Ry Cooder, Weather Report, Mott the Hoople, Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, John Prine, Paul Simon. How in the hell did Nina Simone's "Baltimore" make it, anyway? Esther Phillips did such great work in the '70s, and went disco with style, but I suppose no one remembers.

Edd Hurt, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 00:01 (seven years ago) link

no hocus pocus by focus, seems bogus

mookieproof, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 00:49 (seven years ago) link

ha! you guys are fun. Ry Cooder was robbed!

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 02:09 (seven years ago) link

also, everyone knows that "Everything Must Change" is the best song on Nina's Baltimore album.

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 02:10 (seven years ago) link

out of Edd's list, Badfinger, Beefheart, Raspberries, Richard & Linda, Mott The Hoople, Allmans, Skynyrd, and Paul Simon could go on any 70's list for sure.

i don't miss Prine on a list. would rather see Tom T. Hall on a list.

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 02:13 (seven years ago) link

"Night Comes In" by Richard & Linda might make my 70's top ten. if i had one.

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 02:14 (seven years ago) link

(and would have been an ace choice for hepcat spotify pitchfork list.)

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 02:15 (seven years ago) link

good write up of "girl, you need a change of mind" brad!

Heez, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 02:51 (seven years ago) link

No one agrees on what the term means, but I'd certainly count "Hanging on the Telephone," "Teenage Kicks," "Boys Don't Cry," and the Buzzcocks. Maybe even "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker." (But not the Cars, even though many would.)

clemenza, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 03:09 (seven years ago) link

Undertones are borderline, but no way would I include The Cure or Buzzcocks.

Cars absolutely.

I've learned from past experience that arguing about what is and isn't power pop is a bridge to nowhere.
