i really like this album! "guwop home" is amazing. obviously the worst songs on it are the kanye and drake features

I like it too ("Robbed," "Waybach") and I'll indulge its inclination to play it safe.

i wouldn't really call it playing safe (and did gucci ever really come out with a curveball vis-à-vis his own well-defined aesthetic?) - but it's so focused and effective, and i love (as evan pointed out) hearing him rap about specific emotional stuff in his signature way

its completely playing it safe & doesn't sound substantially different from the last 30 gucci tapes aside from a few references to his changing circumstances. per usual folks are responding to peer interest & hype & not the actual music

i like the quality of the mixing and mastering but it cldve been cool if they took some more time writing the songs

i know thats not the gucci way but hes supposed to be changing his ways and id be curious to hear his take on a minutely crafted album

like i don't think the process of A&R is necessarily antithetical to what makes Gucci great, it just has been historically bc they didn't really get what he was doing

it is well engineered but i think we're looking from more of a songcraft perspective

ya the engineering is great but itd be cool if the songs were a lil more rigorous to match

Of course including some of gucci's own tapes. That wasn't the question tho it was over whether or not this album sounds "minutely crafted" lol

"first day out" gives me chills tbh

this album is just verses he wrote in prison rapped over random instrumentals, right? surely that has more to do with the product than the time it actually took to record

Sigh. I'm just worried about him. I've been rooting for dude for so long now but I can't see how he's ever coming back from this.

Yeah, man. I'm thrilled about his reinvention. Could not have predicted it. And the new songs keep getting better - as in he's sounding more and more at home on them? I'm not expecting a classic but Woptober should be good.

I think a lot of the recent tracks have been only OK, but even on the mediocre he sounds really engaged again. It's really great to hear

Woptober is really good

It is. And whoile I do see deej's point I'll still go with reinvention. The Gucci who came out of jail is a lot more digestible than the guy who went in was. He sounds and acts as if he got a second shot at life.

His hooks are still lacking a bit on Woptober but his rapping is great, present and symbiotic with the beats, plus his lyrics are better than they've been in a good while afaict.

Also, Out The Zoo might well be my favorite rap song this year.

You COULD argue that this says something about the rest of 2016 rap (and you'd be right), but it also sounds like a top shelf Gucci song, so...

People have always liked him cornballs in the press are just super late

I'd say it's a mix of stiffer rap style and boilerplate lyrics and just a general sensation that he's not really pushing himself

= the wrong people like him now. I get that you prefer the 07-09 run, I do too. But the boilerplate lyrics accusation has been around forever, and given that he has been out for just a few months and have dropped two albums in that time, and that he sounds a lot more at home and confident and is clearly trying (and generally succeeding at) saying something about who and where he is now, speaking about his addiction and so on, I'd say he may well be pushing himself. Maybe he'll slip back into some kind of lazy default mode shortly but at the moment he's definitely trying to redefine himself. You don't have to like the direction he's going in though.

i've quite liked some of his guest verses this year -- black beatles and vibin in this bih come to mind immediately -- but i agree with deej that his solo tracks have been pretty stiff

"The wrong people like him" is a reliable sign sure I like to think of them as negative indicators

I can't even argue with that, lol. I still enjoy this album though.

I think his verses are as good as they've been in years; it's the hooks that seem a little tired to me. Small quibble though. I'm just enjoying hearing him enjoy rapping again.
