FUMING Scots dance artist Calvin Harris cut short his gig at last night's Live at Loch Lomond festival after an angry row with fans who threw mud at him.

The Dumfries-born star dropped a song from his set after a few morons in the crowd tossed the dirt on stage.

Calvin, who has produced tracks with KylieMinogue, couldn't believe what he was seeing and slammed the yobs before performing The Girls.

As he introduced the song, he said: "I don't know what you are throwing mud at me for. I make my own music - I'm here to entertain you.

"I'm not like one of those DJs like Carl Cox over there playing other people's records and getting paid £20,000 to do it."

The rest of the crowd cheered as Calvin pointed towards the other dance tents. He then appeared to try to get among the audience to catch the culprits, before deciding it was better to end the gig prematurely.

He spoke exclusively to The Razz after coming off stage.

Calvin said: "It was like three or four guys chucking mud at me and I just thought it was time somebody said something.

"It was when it hit my keyboard that I got angry because I thought 'how much is this gig going to cost us?' I stuck up for myself.

"We actually dropped a song and cut short the set because of it. I wanted to play The Girls so I dedicated it to the guys who threw the mud."

Calvin claimed it was even more of an insult because he's performing with a "proper band" and being paid less than other artists.

He added: "It annoys me some DJs are getting paid five times as much as us when we are a proper band and they're only playing other people's records.

"They are getting so much more than us but we seem to get the grief. It is kept secret in the industry but we are doing all these gigs and other guys are getting paid £20,000 for playing 20 records.

"I kept trying to find the guys who were throwing the mud. The first time it reached the stage I tried to throw some of it back but I didn't want to keep doing that in case it really started something.

When it was messing up all our gear, I thought I should really do something."

Calvin admits being a festival rookie but insists the experience won't put him off playing more.

He said: "Before this I'd never attended a festival - I was just so busy making tracks in my room.

"If I've learned anything it's always bring your own wellies and then leave them with the tour manager. He knows how to deal with dirty wellies."

Yes, everyone knows that playing records is harder than making them, so why shouldn't DJs get paid five times more?

carl cox doesn't get paid more because of what he does on stage. he gets paid more because he can draw 10 times as many people.

I caught the last few songs of his LA set last week, and didn't think it was that bad. Sort of had a 90s dance/LCD Jr. vibe to his songs. I did notice that the club was 18+, and most of the crowd did not have over 21 wristbands, which I think says a lot about his demographic.

Also, way more females than males in attendance, and most looked like they hadn't been to an indie club before. Led me to believe that he must be getting a huge MySpace/MTVU push.

Pretty much all of my issues with Harris are tied up with his voice and persona, which were heavily prevalent on "I Like The Girls" and "Born In The 80s"; those records really were some brand new circle of awful hell. He was a dickhead in interviews and the like at that time as well.

Fear and loathing seem somewhat overdone if he's just producing chintzy circus organ dance-pop now, but if he opens his mouth on the new record then all bets are off.

I just looked at his wikipedia page... that "Sweet Nothing" song is getting some radio play in the US and aside from the horrible Rihanna song it's his highest charting single. But in the UK his last six songs have gone 2-2-2-2-1-6 and both albums #1. Is he totally unavoidable on UK radio/in clubs etc?

I can't imagine any DJ with any kind of rep ever playing Calvin Harris, but he's probably ubiquitous in high street nightclubs (ie most of the clubs in the UK).
