and touch would be my favorite NZ lp ever, for what it's worth. and it and the follow up little things both came out on raffmond, i think.

it can be sometimes disorienteering to take too much alchohol.

Much as I like those two bands, I prefer records by the Great Unwashed, Snapper, Renderers, Clean, Dead C, Gordons, Chills, Tall Dwarfs and Alpaca Bros. (never had a long player but still...) but that just goes to show how crazy-good NZ music is/ was.

but it really was a maelstorm and my ears were ringing for days afterwards. i saw them play maybe 7-8 times and for a long period there they were incredible each and every time. i thought i wouldnt want to be watching any other band anywhere. then they put out that last recored 'sad news for the angels' and it was clear the fire had gone. what a sad way to end. but i reckon that for a period of a about3-4 years there from before hellzappopin probably up to about a year after the venus trail there wasnt a better band on the planet. or in the world.

or even the entire universe.

DUDE! new terminals track posted on the last visible dog website! new album called last days of the sun! i had no idea!

They're chatting about a possible compilation (to include rarities, etc.) over at the 3ds' myspace page. I'd kind of forgotten about them, and pulled out Venus Trail and damn it's still an incredible album.

I started thinking of doing a poll for best song, and then decided not to because I don't think enough people know it well enough to be interested, but if there was ever a record where I'd have a hard time picking a favorite track...

God, I hope they release some the rarities they talk about on that myspace page. Anyone ever heard their peel session?

As for best song on "The Venus Trail," that a tough one because, even though I think it was once my favorite album, I actually haven't listed to it in years. Though looking at a tracklisting now, it does seem that beautiful things is probably the best. Or maybe the title track.

is track two called Philledelphia Rising that song crushes me when its played far too loud- especially the outro. What a monolithic slab of gloriousness. seems like talk of a reunion was premature, which is sad. even if reunions destroy the myth, its a risk i would be willing to take in a heartbeat. Come back 3ds!!

Just rebought a lost copy...it's a little softer, but my pick is probably "Young and the Restless." So pretty. What a band. Spooky is also more amazing than I remembered it.

Dug out The Venus Trail today and it has aged really well! Syrupy pop + guitar squalls + melodies -- good stuff.
3Ds were great, but Hellzapoppin is among the worst album titles though. Up there with Rastakraut Pasta for "this is embarrassing to say out loud"

I was always slightly perplexed by this thread and the comparison made, as the 3Ds were genuinely popular in NZ - supported U2, "Hey Seuss" had the longest continuous run at #1 on student radio in history (I think), etc etc etc. Nothing against the Terminals, mind!

Brian Crook's first solo album Bathysphere has been issued on vinyl by Meds:

It's a really cool, weird album, with some Terminals-esque garage rock, noisy/free-form stuff and quieter, dark tunes.

So I got the Terminals singles comp over the weekend and of course it's amazing! I was already familiar with most of the songs, but it's good to have them in one place.

Somebody should put out a 3Ds singles comp actually.

The Terminals are the best rock band New Zealand has ever produced.
Period. I know there’s heavy competition, but believe it. No group has
lasted over three decades and maintained intensity, structure and mood
better than the core team of Steven Cogle and Peter Stapleton. Cogle’s
voice is a quavering incantation of deep spell-casting, throwing more
dirt onto the already gritty guitar squalls. Stapleton’s rhythm
section propels songs through lightning charges of tempo and energy.
Age has only embedded The Terminals’ mastery to deeper sonic realms.
The ten years between their last album, Last Days of the Sun, and the
release of Antiseptic, whip by in a flash when you play these records
next to each other. The Terminals never disappoint, they never relent.

Antiseptic does mark some changes, however. Longtime guitarist Brian
Crook now lives in the California desert, so Nicole Moffat has
replaced him, providing violin and vocals. Mick El Borado thickens the
atmosphere with his improvisational keyboard playing. A group that has
stayed together so long knows instinctively where a song can go,
although it is often the maverick pieces – ones that at first don’t
seem to belong -- that end up on the records. Their work together has
become only more sagacious, and The Terminals don’t waste an intended
or improvised note. Antiseptic is a peerless rock album, unless you
can think of another group who’ve stayed as heavy, as broke, and
consistent for this long.

Listening to an advance now -- it's very great! Long may they thrive in whatever configuration.

I like Venus Trail fine, but am much more enthusiastic about the 2 on 1 disc of Fish Tales and Swarthy Songs for Swabs. It seems, to my ears at least, to have much stronger songwriting all around. And the band has more "piss and vinegar" if you will. And i generally will always go with the earlier works of nearly all the FN/NZ bands, because to paraphrase Byron Coley, "lo-fi is my fi" esp. when rendered thru Chris Knox's magic 4track. Only Terminals I know is the expressway tape "disease", which is noisy as hell and quite grebt also.

New Terminals album is very good. They're one of those bands with a sound that aging just seems to suit, really.

Most recent Renderers album's really good, too, incidentally.
