A worthy winner, I feel. I'm surprised Missy is so low, but I guess it had only just come out when we were voting. And no Eminem!

Royksopp's from last year, I am being pedantic yes.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 5 January 2003 14:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

US release though Ronan, different tracklisting.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 5 January 2003 14:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh fair enough, yeah if I lived in America I could say Kittenz and Thee Glitz was my favourite album of the year.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 5 January 2003 14:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Fuck, if I hadn't blown five points on Mum & Dad, the Dels'd've been top 10... still, twenty-four points off someone that isn't me - superb...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 5 January 2003 14:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Several people actually - it got a lot of 5-pointers.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 5 January 2003 14:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

after some scrolli'n'scrollin'n'scrollin'...
i see that my (divided-by-fives-and-tens) votings helped push Ekkehard Ehlers into the "lower reaches of top40"!...

How many people voted?

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 5 January 2003 14:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm pleased to see Tom Waits and Blackalicious in the top 20.

"22. BEACHWOOD SPARKS - Make The Cowboy Robots Cry (32)"

heh heh! Me and one other person, but WHICH other person?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 5 January 2003 15:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Did you get my ballot? I gave Derek Bailey 20 pts and Fred Frith 15 but neither appear on the list above. Oh wait, I now see that someone else had to vote for them. I knew I should have just given Andrew WK 30 points - it's the only thing from my list that even got mentioned.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 5 January 2003 15:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I own and enjoy 10 of these, so I like this list. What, no "Sea Change"?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 5 January 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

That reminds me -

These are the records which people heroically sacrificed large numbers (20+) of points for but which didn't get a second vote:

30 points:
Lewis Taylor - Stoned part one
Okkervil River -Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See

25 points:
hrvatski - swarm and dither
RJD2 - Deadringer: 25
walkmen- everyone who pretended to like me is gone - 25 pts

22 points:
Puerto Muerto - Your Bloated Corpse Has Drifted Ashore - Puerto Muerto

20 points:
8 Mile OST
Aarktica - Or You Could Just Go Through Your Whole Life And Be Happy Anyway
Blak Twang - Kik Off
Buddy Holly: What You Been A-Missin'
Derek Bailey - Ballads
DJ SPEC - The Vexed Episode
DJ SPEC - Yellowmix
V/A - Electrolife: Pop For The Electro Age
Keith Fullerton Whitman – Playthroughs
Mastodon - Remission
Solomon Burke - Don't give up on me
Stockholm Monsters - Alma Mater
Talib Kweli 'Quality'
V/A - The Alchemist of Pop (Joe Meek)
U2 - Best Of 1990-2002
Xiu Xiu "The Chapel of the Chimes" EP
Youssou N'Dour - Nothing's in Vain

Mr. S, I gave Delgados 15 points...unless Tom didn't count me again. ;)

Yay - 2 of mine got no other votes! (Monstahs and J. Meek)

well done farben!

stirmonster, Sunday, 5 January 2003 15:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Crucial Farben question - is Starbox the same thing as Textstar but in a different country? Cos if so Farben came 4th!

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 5 January 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

i voted incorrectly, do over. surely twenty other people voted for Saturday Looks Good To Me and you are just keeping him down.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 5 January 2003 15:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

the DJ SPEC votes were shameless self-promotion by me - well, they would be, but i genuinely havent enjoyed listening to anything else as much as them, not even the superior 2 Many DJs mix so its allowed

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 5 January 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

(no payola, phleeeze)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 5 January 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Delgados was a five pointer for me, also. If I gave it 5, Swygart gave it 30, and sean gave it 15, that leaves 4 other points. Which is impossible, as the minimum was 5. Oh well, I'll stop nit-picking, now...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 5 January 2003 15:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Was there a minimum limit? Ah, soddit, it beat the Lips, so I'm happy.

What does surprise me is that I think I may have contributed one-third of the points that Neko got, and a good three-quarters of the points that Nina Nastasia got too.

I have eight of the total albums listed (nine if you include Kik Off), of which I voted for four.

But still. Eleventh. Coom on :)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 5 January 2003 16:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

There was a 5 point minimum but I couldn't be arsed to enforce it, so Pete's 3 points for the Delgados stood. Kilian gave it 6 not 5 so that solves that one!

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 5 January 2003 16:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Here is my top ten for the Pazz and Jop poll: Opeth-Deliverance/Wipers-Wipers Box Set/Northern State-Hip Hop You Haven't Heard/DJ Erik B-Club CD Vol.11/Dalek-from filthy tongue of gods and griots/Various Artists-Knuckletracks XLIII/Doves-The Last Broadcast/NonPhixion-The Future Is Now/Electric Wizard-Let Us Prey/Missy Elliot-Under Construction Singles: Dixie Chicks-Long Time Gone/Clipse-Grindin'/Eminem-Lose Yourself/Missy Elliot-Work It/Afu-Ra-Hip Hop/Timbaland & Magoo-Indian Carpet/Midnight Sun-Metal Gods/Interpol-NYC/Technics-Downside Up/Sheryl Crow-Soak Up The Sun

Scott Seward, Sunday, 5 January 2003 16:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Silly me! Sorry for nit-picking, Tom! Any clues as to who my fellow Beachwood Sparks voter is, or must the ballot remain secret?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 5 January 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I cant remember - I only checked the Delgados thing cos I was paranoid I HAD actually forgotten Sean again!

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 5 January 2003 16:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Crucial Farben question - is Starbox the same thing as Textstar but in a different country?

No, Starbox is four previously released 12-inch records packaged together; Textstar picks and chooses from among those releases, and has about six (?) fewer tracks. All of the tracks on Textstar are on Starbox, I think, but they aren't the same thing.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Sunday, 5 January 2003 17:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Don't feel bad Tom, Sean is pretty forgettable.

(see how I hate you now Sean? ;))

But darn it, I actually meant to vote in this one, but then I got that horrible flu. The Delgados would have placed - you can blame me!

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 5 January 2003 17:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sundar: Ballads would have appeared if I voted. Sorry. I guess Julio didn't cast his ballot either.

c'mon that means farben is 4th then! if you had instead put it as "starbox is the special edition textstar with bonus tracks" there'd be no question

thanks for posting my heroic 20 pointer for Xiu Xiu "The Chapel of the Chimes" EP ... honestly, i think that's the best thing i've heard all year.
m.

msp, Sunday, 5 January 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Likewise, thanks for posting my heroic 20-pointer for Aarktica, although my enthusiasm's waning a bit for it now (I like certain tracks but not sure about the album straight through), plus I've finally heard Farben, Textstar, which is fantastic. All of this too late to revise my ballot...

(msp: How would you compare the Xiu Xiu EP to the full-length from earlier in the year? I loved the full-length at first but fatigue set in after a few listens.)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Sunday, 5 January 2003 23:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am somewhat flummoxed that I had the only vote for the 8 mile soundtrack.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 6 January 2003 02:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

I might've given it one if I had voted, sterl. and if I had decided yet if it would be in my top 10 or not.

I bet simon would've too.

Josh (Josh), Monday, 6 January 2003 03:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah it was just outside my 10 too Sterling. I did sort of assume other people would vote for it, oh well.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 January 2003 10:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

Who was the other voter for DJ Yoda then, because they're going into my "favourite ILXers" list straight away.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 6 January 2003 10:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

''Sundar: Ballads would have appeared if I voted. Sorry. I guess Julio didn't cast his ballot either.''

who else voted for recloose?

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 6 January 2003 11:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

(msp: How would you compare the Xiu Xiu EP to the full-length from earlier in the year? I loved the full-length at first but fatigue set in after a few listens.)

it's way better than the full length. perhaps it's length is a factor, but i think the ep shows them much more raw, and the production is much more bombastic, so the emotion is more pronounced.

m.

msp, Monday, 6 January 2003 22:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

You know, that Top 10 really is eerily representative of ILM as a whole. A little of everything you hear about most.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 6 January 2003 22:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

My top 2 are the poll's top 2, and I voted for Missy - after that you have to wait until No.30 for one of mine (Hustle) and then there's Total 4 and Clipse and Sugababes and Wire.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 January 2003 22:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Also no trina and no tweet!!!!!???

ilm hurts me deep in my heart.

the paulina rubio thing almost makes up for it though, except i think that's just kogan and me.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 06:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

My surprise is that Sleater-Kinney placed so high when *I* didn't vote.

Don't worry I stuffed the ballot for you. I'm geniunely surprised it did so well too. w00t.

As for Boards of Canada, I was hoping that Twoism, even though it's a reissue, would sneak in there instead of Geogaddi, which played more like an extended EP (an EEP?) for me.

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 07:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hello Alan. You are now one of my favourite ILXers.

I think Ballboy being placed top 40 is my favourite moment of that list, to be honest. House music never meant anything at all to me.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 09:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah it is Sterling but it got me to download "Don't Say Goodbye" which is FAB! I also dl'ed "Gimme The Light" from your singles list but I like another track with the same riddim better and am now stuck for placing it.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 11:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

You do realise 15 of Ballboy's points came from me, though?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 14:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Boards of Canada takes the cake this for Record No One Talked About But Nearly Everyone Thought to Include in their Top 10. It's like everyone is sorta interested in IDM, but not all that much, really, and BoC was the only thing they could agree upon, the perfect token inclusion. I think it's a good record, mind you, but it's weird how it has shown up on nearly every list, and placing quite high, too.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 14:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Haha what do Boards Of Canada, Solomon Burke and Orchestra Baobab all have in common?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Tom, what were the top tens if you split it ILM/ILE?

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

mark p:
6 vowels, 3 'O's, 3 'A's? (nope, none of those work for all three)

other mark: dunno about elsewhere, but you couldn't move on ILM for BoC threads when 'Geo-doggi-do' was released

zebedee, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 14:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

I hear ya, Z, but all the discussion centered around "Sounds like BoC, I don't mind" (including my own review & Reynolds list). So I lot of it just slid by.

Also surprised that Prefuse placed in the top 50, as I used it simply to fill out my list so that I'd have ten entries so that I could give 30 to One Beat and 25 to RJD2 (YES IT WAS ME).

Who else voted for One Beat? I'm taking yall out to drink (all both of you).

Yeah but it's an insult from Whiney, it's almost an honor to have him recognize that, apparently, my tastes are different enough from his that it's worth pointing out. Glad to have my differences!

Also, I'd love to see him ru down my list of albums with his opinions. I'm guessing we have at least some crossover in our tastes (hip hop, metal and whatever else), he's just not keen to admit it publicly and would rather hurl off a one-liner at me.
