its strongest feature: being installed in the 'technology' lab at school for play during study hall, or skipped-out-upon pep rallies. basically the only two-player game in that category, too.

Heh, I always wanted to play that too along with Seiken Densetsu 3.
If we're talking long-delayed ROM translations, I'd throw in Gundam Wing: Endless Duel and Front Mission: Gun Hazard, two of the best SFC titles that never made it over.

TurboGrafx 16 stuff (all available in the PSN store!):

Neutopia
New Adventure Island
Bomberman '94
Dungeon Explorer

There are a ton of NeoGeo games in the PSN store, as well. Curious if any of them are worth checking out (most of the games for that system seem pretty distinctly not my thing).

Hold a series of radio-button polls to help un-nominate things. (I'm kidding, but I do have a feeling vote-splitting is going to kill some big franchises here, especially Sonic.)

Noodle Vague otm, I was of the mind that Sonic 2 is the consensus fave, and would thus prevent franchise vote-splitting.

I judge the Sonicses by the soundtrack, so Sonic 1 > 3 >>> 2 imo

Wes Brodicus, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 08:51 (seven years ago) link

Sonic games are kind of weird. i think i agree somewhat w people that say they are not really that good, level design is just too confusing at parts, the games pretty much play like Bubsy the Bobcat (only without the horrible one-touch death) but the presentation is really good, dazzling graphics, cool character design, at first glance it's more impressive than SMW imo.

the series that most impressed me on replay was Shinobi, esp Shinobit 2 & 3. if you haven't had the chance to play through these yet you need to ASAP. Shinobi 2 especially, with all of the copyright infringement madness, fighting the Terminator, Spider-man, Godzilla, etc.

I'm nominating the marginally different SNES version just so I can do a stunt ballot consisting solely of those two games

the ghost of tom, choad (thomp), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 13:10 (seven years ago) link

I've definitely come around to some of the "Sonic isn't all that good" critique, but then there's this thing of... but I played them, very enthusiastically! Counting Sonic CD, I sat in front of the TV for five games of the same basic mechanics (albeit with increasingly dazzling graphics and gimmicks). I think its kinda dull, let's call it "big sprite exploration platforming" hangs together better on some levels than others, and while gathering your rings back up after a hit is certainly annoying, it keeps you playing on through. Certainly if not for the marketing and the "high speed" setpieces, it would never have been a phenomenon, but they didn't just slap branding on a completely average 16-bit platformer. I think I'll end up just voting for Sonic 2, on the Mega Man principle that it's a huge improvement on the first one and none of the later ones really changed anything at all.

important references: the poochies of 90s platforming

i think i'm in the camp of 'sonic was unique + memorable but not v fun'

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:18 (seven years ago) link

i have fond memories of sonic 3 + knuckles but i can well imagine its impressive vastness seeming like more of a slog if i were to play it again today

sonic 2, on the other hand, i can imagine holding up but feeling quite slight

Sonic 2 is probably the right amount of size and depth for a Sonic game imho, if Sonic 1 feels too short for you. IIRC I think S3&K introduces more "secrets" and stuff like that (unless I'm just straight imagining things), but the Chaos Emerald bonus-level quest kinda already gave me enough to work on (and throw my controller down in frustration when I JUST missed the cutoff on one of those racetracks - it's a very unforgiving approach that would never fly now).

'they pelted us with rocks and garbage' (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 15:09 (seven years ago) link

Sonic 2 is great, and will definitely make my ballot. To my 12-year-old, cash-strapped self, the whole Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles thing seemed like a cash-grab, though reading through their wikipedia pages today indicates otherwise. It turned me against those games for some reason.

Sonic games always looked, sounded and felt great but generally controlled like ass unless you were really good.
kind of bad when you consider the main competition was Mario, but I appreciate them going for their own thing
Sonic 2 was the best of these imo

I think of myself as having played a lot of games in this gen but when I look at the snes list there's barely any games I remember, and they were all nommed in like the first ten posts here. basically I played a few 2 player competitive games and I played them SO MUCH but like none of the big RPGs people talk about, hardly any "weird" games, just, like 3000 hours of NBA Jam and Mortal Combat

To think you could have had so much more free time if instead of 3000h of NBA Jam + MK you had just played 1500h of Shaq Fu

oops sorry thought i responded. no, it is 5th generation.

a simba man (Will M.), Monday, 25 July 2016 15:45 (seven years ago) link

not convinced any virtual boy games would be competitive in any generation. i guess if it had been sent back through time to the mid-70s it would have impressed people, but so would Lunchables, FlexiBlocks, and the Big Mouth Billy Bass.
