does it have hooks?

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Friday, 10 June 2016 02:16 (seven years ago) link

Not as many as One Second

calstars, Friday, 10 June 2016 03:14 (seven years ago) link

It sounds a lot more full-bodied than anything before, thd production is very thick and humid. Not a great deal of hooks and her voice feels somewhat obscured but I still enjoyed it.

boxedjoy, Friday, 10 June 2016 07:09 (seven years ago) link

hmm, new one not hitting the sweet spot very often. feels a little underworked at times; the songs sometimes seem to go on forever with minimal variation. feels like a holding motion, honestly.

I'm into this album, which is a relief because I didn't think much of the last one.

Nothing But Scenery is awesome and deep

calstars, Saturday, 18 June 2016 20:04 (seven years ago) link

yeah so heavy & unusual; bc it starts so unadorned it was v surprising to play the record & hear it, but it has shades of the weird repurposing mission nj records have generally, i think. i remember reading some interview w her forever ago where she talks abt synthetic sounds from the eighties having a second act, like there having been a literally creative phase in which instruments were invented but their use being sort of truncated by the limits of the era in which they were populated, & it's so hazy & kind of eerie to hear her duet in sync w/ chiming synth noise

schlump, Sunday, 19 June 2016 00:26 (seven years ago) link

agree, it's a very strange *sounding* album but can't put my finger on exactly how

calstars, Sunday, 19 June 2016 03:01 (seven years ago) link

i don't like the vocals

ejemplo (crüt), Monday, 20 June 2016 13:43 (seven years ago) link

Too much echo and reverb. There seems to be some good singing underneath all of tgat, but it's hard to tell.

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Monday, 20 June 2016 13:57 (seven years ago) link

Nite Funk is out today. Dam's jams are nice and Ramona plays a subdued role vocally for the most part.

calstars, Sunday, 3 July 2016 04:07 (seven years ago) link

i am just being difficult but i am enjoying this record so much !, + then halfway thru listening i remember the internet's ambivalence + kick a hole in the speaker, snap the arm from the turntable, take a bite out of the record + beat my chest wailing like harvey keitel. i saw her play w julia holter a few nights ago. it is such a good record, i think, + super interesting to hear her talk abt it existing as a kind fundamental full-circle nj record, like sharing so much dna w the first lp. the slow jams really grow on me too.

i bought the lp + read the v spare words for the first song i'd been getting hung up on, i still can't tell why it's spookin me so, living in this quiet zone. so gd !

schlump, Sunday, 3 July 2016 04:22 (seven years ago) link

im gonna go see her on wed im excited, not planning on listening to the new alb before that tho

johnny crunch, Monday, 4 July 2016 00:30 (seven years ago) link

schlump, Friday, 23 September 2016 14:33 (seven years ago) link

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Friday, 23 September 2016 14:34 (seven years ago) link

this is rly the 'i wish it had likable characters' of music to me

OK wow I love her again

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 19:46 (seven years ago) link

Nite Jewel's last full length was pretty decent (particularly like "Running Out of Time"). Opening with "Nothing But Scenery" was an odd choice though as it feels like the album loses momentum instantly.

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 21:48 (seven years ago) link

Do all the LA artists go to the same beach up the coast to shoot their videos? I feel like I just saw one like this starring weyes blood.

calstars, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 23:12 (seven years ago) link

3 listens in
Sounds like a jammier version of "goes through your head"
Happy to hear the major key cues

calstars, Saturday, 25 March 2017 16:51 (seven years ago) link

this is so damn good, it's been stuck in my head all weekend

Heard an advance of the full thing...it's nice? Not deathless.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 27 March 2017 04:28 (seven years ago) link

Tell us more Ned...does it sound like the last one or is it brighter? Like the hypnagogic pop of her first one or less slanted?

New one not as upbeat as the other but still very welcome
Kind of wish I could make out the words though?

calstars, Wednesday, 5 April 2017 01:16 (seven years ago) link

Here's my attempt at most of it:

I saw you out
it was in a dream
you talked to me
but what did it mean?

took me home
sitting on the couch
it was dark
I was out

please don't let the light in
cuz we're trying
to find you in the space that's in between us
yeah

i still believe in space
cover up my eyes again
seem like you're away (?)

is it you (??)

....

the answer is love
the answer is love

....

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Wednesday, 5 April 2017 01:35 (seven years ago) link

I thought it was "the answer is no"

calstars, Wednesday, 5 April 2017 01:58 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I think it's "no". Seems like this album is a logical progression from Nite-Funk so far

Newest one "had to let me go" is the most funky of the singles so far:

calstars, Sunday, 30 April 2017 16:52 (six years ago) link

Wish the Meters could play rhythm on it.

calstars, Sunday, 30 April 2017 16:55 (six years ago) link

^ Nice track. "Obsession" EP has grown on me; it's uniformly chill which initially turned me off, but I found it compelling in the rain today. Sublime and insular, with the highlights "Real High" and "Real Low", gorgeous tracks with alien, aquatic synth bursts.

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 23:55 (six years ago) link

Haven't heard the EP but will ASAP

I also think this latest one is the one she's most invested and engaged in

calstars, Thursday, 4 May 2017 00:49 (six years ago) link

Yeah this might be my favorite since One Second days

calstars, Saturday, 6 May 2017 01:03 (six years ago) link
