so one of the dudes from Excepter has produced an album with a sextet of 12-14 year old girls from Brownsville rapping over VERY Excepter=like beats. my friend's label is putting out the vinyl. very strange and obviously a novelty, but kind of awesome, too. like Rye-Rye but more fucked-up and menacing, on first listen.

Since this thread sorta went unnoticed the first two times around, I'm gonna put it here. I might be claiming new favorite band. Francis and the Lights

that's kindof a bit more balearic yacht rock than kinda out there, maybe kinda experimental, maybe kinda pretentious modern r&b and there are about a million threads about that.

So off one listen Triangle is basically awesome. Lots of really blunted loops with prettiness strewn about on top. Shock sample of the album: Antibalas' "Beaten Metal" on "Re: Outsource".

yeah that let me show ya was actually a jazzanova track he was featured on, if you didnt know. i've got "this is what it is", an EP of his, which didn't leave much of an impression on me, but he's featured on a couple of other jazzanova tracks from of all the things. i forget who but i think someone said he's coming out with something this year

I got the impression from discogs that he had already put out his own version of that song and maybe they sampled the vocals?

So I saw Muhsinah and Platinum Pied Pipers last night. Well, only really one song by PPP b/c they didn't go on until 1 AM and I'm old.
Thoughts on Muhsinah: really dug her sound a whole lot -- but her songwriting is kinda weak, IMO. I like that her melodies are unpredictable, full of weird half-note jumps, but it's almost to a fault: lots of times it just sort of sounded meandering. But I'd be interested in hearing the recordings.

glad there are vocal tracks, wasn't hugely into the idea of an all-instrumental Nicolay record, but I shouldn't have worried about anything as the instrumentals are rich with detail, too

Ah, just realized the vocals on here are Carlitta Durand. I've been obsessed by "Her" off this - http://rs615.rapidshare.com/files/222174745/Carlitta_s_Way.rar - mixtape at various points.
I want to hear "Saturday Night" out, but realize it will probably never happen.

yo at any point did ya'll discuss the j*davey album(s)? i know it's over a year old but i only got a hold of it a week ago and have been finding alot to love about it.

The J*Davey album was pretty enjoyable for a few listens. Some keepers there. I look forward to seeing where they go in the future.
Shafiq Husayn's En A-Free-Ka is pretty good, a lot better and a lot more focused than this year's Sa-Ra album. Interesting how most of the rhythms seem to be based more in Afro-beat than hiphop or R&B.
