The Slate article at least makes logical sense. The Globe & Mail article needs some sort of soothing pussy ointment, and perhaps a bag of ice.

What bugs me about Twitter, I'm starting to discover, isn't so much the form as the content. Plenty of terrific writers and thinkers have believed in the idea that any statement could be conveyed well enough in 250 words or less (140 words I'm not sure), but the problem with so much blogging and, in this case, micro-blogging is that the content is almost always mundane and ultimately worthless.

I'm reminded of Dalrymple's recent quote that "celebrity is the magic fairy dust that makes the mundane fascinating" and that "modern celebrity is the common man worshiping himself" and wonder if the recent idea people have (namely that any mundane thought or experience that they might have is ipso facto interesting to somebody or, at the very least, worthy of being shared online) is tied into concepts like the one Dalrymple mentioned.

I think that after years and years of being taught to be idolaters (or at the very least uber toleraters) of movie stars, rock stars, celebs and pop culture figures in general, people are attracted to sites that essentially let them play the vain celebrity they will, in all likelihood, never get to be otherwise. If Brad Pitt - who outside of handsome looks and light charm is essentially no different than you - can draw interest with what he had for dinner with his wife last night - why shouldn't you?! Do we not live in a democratic society? Many of the ideas behind Facebook apps - and twitter as a site - seems to be having artificial intelligence play the Access Hollywood-styled interviewer who flatters you with interest in your ennui and daily ephemera ("Hurry and compile lists of your _______. What are you doing RIGHT NOW? We're dying to know your answers!").

It's the intellectual equivalent of those tourist trap booths that, for a price, will stick your face on the cover of Time Magazine and let you keep a copy for yourself. The idea is to indulge you in a fantasy of being really important and, like many celebrities, no talent is required, we'll just skip to the part where we're interested in everything about you.

*As a disclaimer, I know that there are plenty of uses for Facebook - and even Twitter - that aren't directly related to narcissism, and that both sites (though I've not really used Twitter) can be fun. This is just pondering at a strange hour.

So is the internet. Your entire point is stuffy at best.

Maybe I should just turn it into an essay entitled "But What Will Happen to Us Long-Winded Types Now That We're All Into Status Updates And Soundbites? (An Ode To No One)"

There should be a Twitter service that doesn't allow tweets with less than 140 words for that.

I am so sunburned and need help! I'm in Mexico and I was sunbathing when I fell asleep with my huge Prada butterfly sunglasses on and now look at me! I'm going to have to hide from cameras for days. I usually never get red, I always get dark. It hurts! Do u guys have any remedies I can try to help ease the pain and get rid of the redness?

Everyone here is making fun of me! Look at Reggie's teammate and friend Bobby starting with the jokes. My whole body is burned but my face looks the worst because of the glasses. I will never wear sunglasses when sunbathing again!

This is so stupid it has to be a wind-up.

James, dude, you gotta check out her blog in which she rants over the fact that Octomom has the same designer sunglasses which is HORRIBLE because Octomom should be spending the money on kids. Maybe Kimmy was able to buy those specs cause, well, she made another flipping sextape. I mean, jesus, is she for real? Twitter, blogging and whatnot really are eyeopeners into the world of celebs. Never realized there were such dumbasses. What did Ashton say about him winning from CNN? Like it was some big deal and shit. But I should stfu cause I follow way too many celebs (I don't even like).

Okay, I'm sorry, Twitter is now funny and worth (some) investment.

BTW, ILXors, who was that famous surrealist that videotaped his own death by strangulation back in the 1970s? Genesis P Orridge was a fan.
