^^Exactly....252 listens in a week. "What Did He Say" is pretty damn special.

Spinspin Sugah, Friday, 31 July 2009 20:21 (seven years ago) Permalink

still haven't heard the album but the first 12" has been played all year since i got in like november i think. really good. i see it as a dark and moody take on all those great sassy female vocalled west end tracks like "another man"

is she good live? playing over here in august

so dreamy. "want you back" is like a melted fantasy of madonna.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 16 August 2009 04:53 (seven years ago) Permalink

her weakest track...the ONLY weak track.

Spinspin Sugah, Sunday, 16 August 2009 05:18 (seven years ago) Permalink

ha, no. the album does have some weakish tracks, but they don't bother me in the context of the album. but "want you back" is peak material. it's not afraid of itself.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 16 August 2009 05:26 (seven years ago) Permalink

Can't stop listening to Want You Back

Trip Maker, Thursday, 27 August 2009 22:27 (seven years ago) Permalink

that "artificial intelligence" song upthread is really nice. the synths are very nostalgic to me. they remind me of joe jackson or something. or like 80s yes.

Love this. Heard from folks who saw her in London that it was a bit dull live, but I guess I can see it might. Great stuff though.

Me and my dad love these two. This new wave of lo-fi/no-fi goodness keeps getting better and better. It's all very "cable access performance".

quiet and secretively we will always be together (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 10 December 2009 07:02 (seven years ago) Permalink

I had high hopes for this but my goodness, is this ever the wrong end of the 80s for me

I do like the hook on the chorus, though, when her voice comes in and it's all pretty

it just reminds me of the "nightclub" scene in so many cop operas on telly in the late 80s

Karen Tregaskin, Thursday, 10 December 2009 10:29 (seven years ago) Permalink

also nite funk= whole album! (sorry if that's old news but i just assumed am i gonna make it was a 1 off)

I assumed Nite-Funk as a one-off as well, but this news of a whole album is the kind of shit that gets me excited.

There is going to be a Nite Jewel thread on the roof of a building in my town in a couple of weeks and I'm pretty stoked.
I just hope it gets some promotional help, or that the right few people tell their friends about it. It's the kind of event that could easily fly under the radar.

titchyschneiderhouserules (s1ocki), Thursday, 29 July 2010 19:56 (six years ago) Permalink

tour only, uh huh. some of it was on a japanese 7" too i think. i liked another horizon the most. think stones throw are rereleasing her LP, too.

Weak For Me is perfect. The rest of the songs tend to get a little too moody and lost.

Nothing But Scenery is awesome and deep

calstars, Saturday, 18 June 2016 20:04 (eight months ago) Permalink

yeah so heavy & unusual; bc it starts so unadorned it was v surprising to play the record & hear it, but it has shades of the weird repurposing mission nj records have generally, i think. i remember reading some interview w her forever ago where she talks abt synthetic sounds from the eighties having a second act, like there having been a literally creative phase in which instruments were invented but their use being sort of truncated by the limits of the era in which they were populated, & it's so hazy & kind of eerie to hear her duet in sync w/ chiming synth noise

schlump, Sunday, 19 June 2016 00:26 (eight months ago) Permalink

agree, it's a very strange *sounding* album but can't put my finger on exactly how

calstars, Sunday, 19 June 2016 03:01 (eight months ago) Permalink

i don't like the vocals

ejemplo (crüt), Monday, 20 June 2016 13:43 (seven months ago) Permalink

Too much echo and reverb. There seems to be some good singing underneath all of tgat, but it's hard to tell.

Nite Funk is out today. Dam's jams are nice and Ramona plays a subdued role vocally for the most part.

i am just being difficult but i am enjoying this record so much !, + then halfway thru listening i remember the internet's ambivalence + kick a hole in the speaker, snap the arm from the turntable, take a bite out of the record + beat my chest wailing like harvey keitel. i saw her play w julia holter a few nights ago. it is such a good record, i think, + super interesting to hear her talk abt it existing as a kind fundamental full-circle nj record, like sharing so much dna w the first lp. the slow jams really grow on me too.

i bought the lp + read the v spare words for the first song i'd been getting hung up on, i still can't tell why it's spookin me so, living in this quiet zone. so gd !
