haha didn't even notice this the first couple times. so dumb

Spottie, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:40 (seven years ago) link

this promo prompts me to imagine simmons saying "I like soup" in the voice of ralph wiggum

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Monday, 16 May 2016 17:48 (seven years ago) link

like, i get it when there's really nothing left for him to do other than have a tv show but he's so bad on camera

call all destroyer, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:53 (seven years ago) link

he cld still be an extremely popular writer but he doesnt want to i guess

lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:54 (seven years ago) link

which i mean sure who wldnt rather be on tv but like if thats not really what youre good at

lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:55 (seven years ago) link

but on the other hand hbo seems to have no problem carrying cheap studio sports shows that no one watches for years so its prob perfect for him

lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:56 (seven years ago) link

yeah of course he's just overambitious and is reaching further with this venture, like his new site will cover topics he's totally out of his depth on like tech and politics and he needs to conquer a new medium so he has to get a show, idk maybe it will all be popular enough but this promo didn't even have the production values of the grantland nba previews with jalen.

call all destroyer, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:57 (seven years ago) link

his destiny is prob as a podcaster

lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:58 (seven years ago) link

definitely his best medium

call all destroyer, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:59 (seven years ago) link

like grantland was unprofitable and eventually his new backers will get sick of him/of losing money, no ones gonna watch his nbo show, he doesnt want to write, but his podcasts are wildly popular, theres money in pods/theyre extremely cheap to produce

lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 18:00 (seven years ago) link

I believe soup is the new internet

Clay, Monday, 16 May 2016 20:06 (seven years ago) link

i think he'll have to write to keep the ringer's traffic afloat in the short term but maybe he will be stretched too thin

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2016 23:18 (seven years ago) link

reminds me of this gem

verhexen, Monday, 16 May 2016 23:47 (seven years ago) link

kind of liked the promo *shrugs*

fwiw, haven't listened to the podcast in weeks.

Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:26 (seven years ago) link

why does everybody keep assuming the ringer needs to generate profit? honestly, that should be the least of their concerns for the foreseeable future. the entire point of vc is to grow your market (or audience).

Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:27 (seven years ago) link

they're still hiring like drunken sailors so i tend to agree.

i've been off the pod mostly due to the non-sports guests but the one he did with travon free was great, that guy is pretty engaging.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:43 (seven years ago) link

bill simmons has exactly nothing to do with vc

mookieproof, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:44 (seven years ago) link

the ringer is raising vc

Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:49 (seven years ago) link

point is a high end vanity project has no chance to be profitable ever in todays media environment

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:51 (seven years ago) link

tho who knows maybe theyll be more willing to engage in content farming than grantland was

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:52 (seven years ago) link

simmons seemed extremely opposed to that sort of thing, he thought if he cld just hire as many writers he liked that of course ppl wld want to read it

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:54 (seven years ago) link

even if it doesn't ultimately make a difference i'm p. certain this will be under better stewardship than grantland was with espn

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:54 (seven years ago) link

they can say fuck now that prob gets the vc pouring in

Clay, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:56 (seven years ago) link

espn is a hugely successful company whos calling the shots w this startup thingy idk xp

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:58 (seven years ago) link

idk either but i do know disney/espn is about as traditional a media company as there is, not sure how grantland ever was supposed to fit into their thing. it has a better chance on its own.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 02:02 (seven years ago) link

the ringer isn't owned by hbo? figured it was

Clay, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 02:03 (seven years ago) link

separate venture iirc

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 02:04 (seven years ago) link

simmons maintaining a good relationship w his espn benefactors was his best shot

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 02:06 (seven years ago) link

they let him on tv they gave him his own site its kinda funny

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 02:16 (seven years ago) link

espn was a hugely successful company

balls, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 05:33 (seven years ago) link

hbo promos are kinda always awful but i'm still a bit skeptical of whether the show will work, if he was willing to do an hour long free flowing conversation i could see it being enjoyable but what he's mentioned it seems like that is not going to be the case. hbo probably doesn't care much either way, they just want content as they prep toward moving more and more to being a streaming service. would have to imagine there's some hbo stake in the ringer but there's apparently definitely heavy vc cash and that whole pod he did w/ louis ck where they were talking about how at this moment creating and owning content is basically minting cash makes me wonder what the structure is. if/when the ringer does happen he'll write something if only to drive traffic but it's been very apparent his heart hasn't really been in writing for a while, i can remember him mentioning tony kornheiser telling him there would come a point when the writing would go and little things he's said (there were a couple of comments during the david chang pod specifically) that pretty much confirmed his writing is purely to help the ringer or just get out an opinion he needs out there.

balls, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 05:47 (seven years ago) link

that whole pod he did w/ louis ck where they were talking about how at this moment creating and owning content is basically minting cash

lol wut

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 05:49 (seven years ago) link

lol daily mail. goon really? www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/louis-ck-clarifies-he-is-886305

fun fact: almost no tv show makes a profit first run. the only one currently airing that does iirc is the walking dead.

balls, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 05:59 (seven years ago) link

eh when he sells Horace and Pete to Netflix or Hulu or whatever he'll be in the black

Clay, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 06:01 (seven years ago) link

yeah once his gloomy realist drama about a dying bar hits netflix the cash will start rolling in for sure

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 06:02 (seven years ago) link

i used the daily mail cause their url is the best, most shows never make a profit which is a group his web series is destined to join, which is why ppl tend not to self finance

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 06:03 (seven years ago) link

he's already made a profit selling it to weirdos in his site

balls, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 06:04 (seven years ago) link

no way has he earned a profit yet

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 06:07 (seven years ago) link

louie self produced a stand up special that did really well then was all i have this notoriously difficult business figured out then went online and talked w bill simmons abt how content is king during the million consecutive tsunami hitting the industry simmons creates content for, moral of the story its good to be a star
