No, it's a thing. Keeps getting screenshotted and commented on by legit accounts.

The semi-serious gist being that as long as Twitter doesn't employ any actual people to eyeball promoted content before it hits streams it will be fairly easy for porn companies, racists, etc to use just-about-sfw pictures and innocuous text to trick the algorithms, the cumulative effect being a much harder site to use at work.

not really a fan of neera tanden but breunig was kind of all over the place -- his allegation that she supported welfare reform as part of the clinton administration isn't really even true. i'm sure he'll land somewhere better than whatever demos is

bruenig done worse w/ much less powerful ppl and seemed to love getting especially vitriolic w/ women in particular, borderline gamergate type behavior. apparently demos gave him the option of abstaining from harassment on twitter and he refused so they fired him. they're catching heat for firing someone who's about to be a father but i also question his judgment, like what a weird definition of integrity, shades of the gawker guys treating revenge porn like the pentagon papers. he definitely does very good, vital work and hopefully will get hired soon elsewhere, the internet in general but social media especially can amplify and foster some pretty awful behavior from ppl who otherwise would never act that way.

shame on me for linking to vox but that's a decent overview i think. would love to read something analyzing the effects (which can probably now be said to include long term effects, it's been a generation) of welfare reform, esp on a state by state basis and factoring in the effect on disability, but i can imagine that would be a difficult project and man talk about an issue that virtually nobody on the political spectrum is capable of being objective about.

elizabeth bruenig seems smart and cool so i trust that this dude is irl a smart and cool dude that turns into a complete ass online (it happens, trust me i know) but him making a stand irl and deciding he'd rather be fired from this job he does genuinely good work at and that apparently accounts for 30% of his income on the eve of having a kid because his conscience wouldn't allow him to take a breather from his weird mmorpg campaign against 'geriatric' liberals (who are almost always either women or poc though i'm sure that's a coincidence) does make me wonder. this has kinda made a lot of weird twitter unbearable for me also, esp as they're the ones that really go in hard and are willing to go a few steps further than bruenig (threatening to twist someone's tits off is such a weird mix of psychopathy, juvenilia, and misogyny)(though tbf the only one of these campaigns it looks like bruenig actually organized was the year and half harrassment campagin against sarah jeong, apparently for criticizing jacobin) and they're also usually desperate freelancer types that refer to hunter thompson (often) as 'the good doctor', much much prefer and respect the ones that have some shitty job in a cubicle or at dominos or whatever.

I wouldn't underestimate how much of the willingness to donate was driven by an affection for Elizabeth.

Leftist Twitter and weird Twitter need to divorce ASAP. Pretty much any time these arguments get heated there's a pile-on of aspiring irony boys which objectively doesn't look much different to harassment. At the same time, that seems to be mirrored by a lot of unpleasantness from the other side - other writers have been threatened with campaigns to get them fired and a couple of good writers, like E. Bruenig and Roqayah Chamseddine, have either been harassed off Twitter or become so sick of the toxicity they've quit. It just makes everyone look ridiculous.

idk all the details, but we've kind of reached the point where criticizing person x's views and "organizing a harassment campaign" against person x can look pretty similar from person x's point of view. there's always pool of angry leftists/trump supporters/russian troll army just looking for a target, so anything that directs attention to a person can result in a tidal wave of shit, especially on twitter.
