it's as if one billion inexplicably laudatory broke with expensive taste reviews screamed out at once and then were suddenly deleted from dozens of music publications

odd that ilx gave song of the year to a dangerously narcissistic novelty act

tbf she hadn't said or done anything around "212" to suggest this level of awfulness (to my knowledge, anyway)

Pretty sure she's not a very nice person, also pretty sure 212 is still one of the best tracks from 2011

what's "mood boarding"?

― how's life, Wednesday, May 11, 2016 7:41 AM (1 hour ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Mood boards are generally a collection of images compiled to establish a visual direction/tone for something in the early phases of a design project.

she seems unstable. or someone with some very deep-seated insecurity issues. her explanation of 'we are both ppl of colour' about her rant against zayn malik didnt even make sense, as if she was saying 'we are both people of colour, and me being racist towards you was in fact to show you we are in this together' huh? interesting/encouraging how theres been such a backlash though. she is hardly the first rapper with racist views against other minorities.

then again, maybe she is totally fine, but just cant leave twitter alone, and needs to make people saw 'ooooh' every 5 minutes, or her life feels empty and worthless.

Guess she can leave it alone now, as her Twitter account has been suspended

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Thursday, 12 May 2016 15:38 (seven years ago) link

i dont like anything she says really. i dont even care for her music. but that seems excessive. there are far worse twitter users out there.

StillAdvance, Thursday, 12 May 2016 15:41 (seven years ago) link

I think as soon as you're throwing out the racial epiphet she used on Zayn you've certainly "earned" it

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 12 May 2016 15:45 (seven years ago) link

yeah im not supporting anything she says. she can go and get gangbanged herself for all i care. i suppose im just saying im a bit suspicious of excessive reactions to offensive comments when twitter/social media/the internet seems to be laden with it. seems almost like its more about people wanting to show how righteous they are, than truly condemning what she says. or maybe im just cynical. its probably a good thing. doubt she will learn anything from it though.

Leave MIA the f–ck alone. You guys are idiots and have COMPLETELY missed the point of what she’s trying to tell you. THIS IS A BLACK PERSON. Sri Lankans/Indians are BLACK. U guys keep for getting that black is not something we share as an ethnicity it’s something we share as a GLOBAL STRUGGLE … the LIBERAL MEDIA has its d–ck so far down you sheeples throats that you can’t even understand what she’s saying. SHES TELLING YOU THAT HER PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING JUST AS OURS ARE. LEAVE MAYA THE F–CK ALONE AND LET HER DO HER PERFORMANCE. FOR F–CKS SAKE.

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 14:26 (seven years ago) link

idk why people expect mature, non-inflammatory political opinions from m.i.a. or azealia banks for that matter. they're not running for president and nothing they say is as bad as what comes from one of the bros who is.

Treeship, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 15:18 (seven years ago) link

Also in this instance banks mostly otm. Maybe it was ill advised for MIA to compare disparate struggles or whatever but "boycotting" her seems a bit much. Not everyone has the exact same perspective all the time.

Treeship, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 15:21 (seven years ago) link

wrong thread but i think MIA acquitted herself well -
“A#blacklivesmatter B#Muslimlivesmatter. I’m not Muslim . My criticism wasn’t about Beyoncé. It’s how u can say A not B right now in 2016....My question was,on American platforms what do they allow you to stand up for in 2016. This has been the number 1 question for me.”

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 15:27 (seven years ago) link

she initially suggested that the black lives matter movement is making some *yawn* easy, noncontroversial, corporate- and government-sponsored argument. as opposed to the (supposedly) more heroically marginal causes she champions. which seems pretty fucking shitty to me, and characteristically self-important besides.

yes, we americans are myopically obsessed with local issues, often ignoring or failing to comprehend anything beyond our own borders. but the black lives matter movement doesn't deserve to be smugly derided as an example of that.

oculus lump (contenderizer), Tuesday, 21 June 2016 17:06 (seven years ago) link

I agree. And yet this is a person who has flirted with imagery associated with groups that perpetrate suicide bombings. She is just on her own thing. The poltical dimensions of her work demand attention but they have never been the kind of thing westerners were supposed to embrace comfortably. They were never even intended as fully coherent.

Treeship, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 18:11 (seven years ago) link

Maybe this is a dumb point. I am just not sure what the benefit is of being offended by known political eccentrics. MIA's perspective is marginal and idiosyncratic. She doesn't seem to have "followers"; she doesn't present a threat to BLM. Boycotting her seems like a weird tactic

Treeship, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 18:31 (seven years ago) link

it does seem silly to get bent out of shape over MIA saying some new weird thing

oculus lump (contenderizer), Tuesday, 21 June 2016 18:35 (seven years ago) link

"she initially suggested that the black lives matter movement is making some *yawn* easy, noncontroversial, corporate- and government-sponsored argument. as opposed to the (supposedly) more heroically marginal causes she champions. which seems pretty fucking shitty to me, and characteristically self-important besides."

her choice of words wasnt great. but her point is simply that blacklivesmatter is more accepted in the media, or afforded more coverage at least, than other human/civil rights causes/movements, that there will be more support in liberal outlets for BLM than the causes she is interested in. not sure how that is really so controversial.

america has the biggest media leverage/presence in the world. so it follows that even causes that appear to challenge american policing will also get more coverage. same way most people around the world are far more informed about black civil rights battles and history than other similar struggles in other countries. or to bring it back to music, same way we all know about PE and NWA, but not political music from elsewhere (also much to do with the language, and it being in the west, etc).

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 09:45 (seven years ago) link

like, for all the racism, exploitation, uneven balance of power, nasty history, etc, black american artists are pretty much the richest, most famous, etc etc, of any non white artists in the world. kendrick and beyonce are just the latest in that long line. so i can see why MIA might, if not call on them to lend their support, but just to point out that they DO have a power that non white artists from elsewhere generally do not. its messy stuff, for sure, but not totally baseless.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 11:12 (seven years ago) link

agree with all that, but "choice of words" isn't a trivial matter

oculus lump (contenderizer), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 11:35 (seven years ago) link

‘It’s interesting that in America the problem you’re allowed to talk about is Black Lives Matter. It’s not a new thing to me — it’s what Lauryn Hill was saying in the 1990s, or Public Enemy in the 1980s. Is Beyoncé or Kendrick Lamar going to say Muslim Lives Matter? Or Syrian Lives Matter? Or this kid in Pakistan matters? That’s a more interesting question. And you cannot ask it on a song that’s on Apple, you cannot ask it onan American TV programme, you cannot create that tag on Twitter, Michelle Obama is not going to hump you back.’

re-reading it, im not sure that her choice of words is all that problematic. its just not very subtle (which is MIA all over, she cant help herself)

i think people just didnt like what she said as it suggests a certain, um, 'black privilege' (sorry, MIA is influencing my own phrasing lol) w/r/t media presence/coverage/support etc, which obv, if you are campaigning on the side of BLM, might not sit well with trying to drive home the issue that black people are powerless.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 11:42 (seven years ago) link

just to be clear, i am not saying that black american people in general are all living the high life, this is about political campaigns, messages, and awareness.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 11:44 (seven years ago) link

yeah, it's naive & self-serving "political" grandstanding

oculus lump (contenderizer), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 11:49 (seven years ago) link

on her part?

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 11:52 (seven years ago) link

self serving political grandstanding is the name of the game when it comes to musicians and politics. a good dash of narcissism and myopia doesnt hurt either. too much reason and you lose emotional impact. also, artists are sensitive about their shit (to quote ms badu) and prefer to think subjectively rather than intellectually, so trying to introduce objectivity doesnt always go down too well.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 12:00 (seven years ago) link

yes, on her part. like i said, she's throwing shade at blm in order to elevate herself & the causes she cares about, which strikes me as a shitty move. there are already more than enough people out there chanting "all lives matter".

oculus lump (contenderizer), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 12:22 (seven years ago) link

yeah, that was def petty and unnecessary. and surprising from someone as conspiratorial about controls of power as her. directing her ire at the wrong target.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 12:33 (seven years ago) link

although, even allowing for MIA as a kind of political-cause-hipster, she doesnt actually say BLM has no point, or no cause. shes not throwing shade *AT* BLM. shes really throwing shade at the media.

ok im going to stop talking about this now.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 12:41 (seven years ago) link

I'm going to try to sneak the "clean" version of "212" into Friday's school assembly. It seems fine--a little, um, choppy--but I've got to give it an extra-close listen in the car tomorrow morning.
