I missed out on mclusky for years, because I convinced myself they sounded like Hefner. Who I have never knowingly heard because of their name.

Terje Rypdal, Shaham Hagai, Nejad Rastegar Nasser, Barrington Levy, Isung Yun, Josek Suk (clearly suks), Professor Longhair (damn hippies), Dr John (get back in the surgery), Peter Tosh (clearly tosh), Sofia Gubaidulina (too close to Gobbolino). Man, racism is hard.

- Fuck Buttons- Holy Fuck- Fucked Up (although this uncited anecdote on their wikipedia page is amusing: "Zucker was replaced as frontman after missing several crucial shows while in jail for punching a Toronto police officer who had stolen a ham sandwich from him")- I guess I just don't like band names with fuck in them, okay? although I'm oddly indifferent to Anal Cunt.- Fountains of Wayne (compounded by the fact they're responsible for that horrible Stacey's Mom song)- The Boy Least Likely To
Some of the ones listed that I've heard — My Morning Jacket, Cute is What We Aim For, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, You Say Party! We Say Die!, and Minus the Bear — I thought lived up to the awfulness of their names.

Hefner were better than McClusky- both very good, too. Bad and rather misleading names.
I always thought Nirvana was a terrible name, given their approach, and given that there were a ton of bands in their greater scene that were far more mind-manifesting (Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, Loop)
― bendy, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 12:02 (fifteen years ago) link
Hefner were a terrible band.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 12:11 (fifteen years ago) link
You know, I never bothered listening to Hefner or McClusky, and the names were a big part of that.
xpost re artists performing under their own dull names - I get over this, but initially, my reaction tends to be "What, you just couldn't be bothered going to the trouble?"

Nobody's brought up all the ska bands with some ska-related term in their names or metal bands with highly genre-specific type names. Probably because those that write off/pointedly ignore those names also write off/pointedly ignore those genres.

Unnecessary punctuation is a recurring theme. I mean, who names a band
Boats!
with an exclamation mark? I mean, you might as well call your band "we'reabunchoffucktardsobv".
If I recall there was a band named "Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start" or whatever that Nintendo cheat was. Owch! And the title of their album was "Worst Band Name Ever," which self-awareness did not exonerate them.

When I was in high school we were bored and playing "outdo each other listing obscure bands" and the nerdiest loner guy came up with "People with Chairs up their Noses" and we roundly mocked him for making shit up.
And then later I found out that was a real band :|
