Japanese in-train advertising from the 1950s: the Keirin/horseracing ones (set 5) are probably my favourite.

I bought at the flea market a free in-flight book from Sabena from this era and every page is filled with the most amazing illustrations and design. Not this exactly, but along these lines.

Futura was pretty rare post-war, wasn't it? It was designed in the 1920s.

^^ niiiiiice

Futura was pretty rare post-war, wasn't it? - you do see it used in A LOT of popular design from this era, though (including some stuff on this thread) - especially on paperbacks and posters. I was unaware that it was as old as the 20's. I guess I associate a lot of prewar design with Art Deco-style typefaces, but I do not profess to be an expert on the subject (even though I am a g. designer by trade lol).

I would love to read a comprehensive history of typography from the industrial age onward, if such a book exists (recommendations plz).

I know, second repost from that blog. If you don't already follow it, it's a pretty hip shop in london I think that mostly sells like old stationery bits and bobs and has an immaculate sense of design and style. Everything a bit cutesy and pricey but amazing none the less.

I'm currently helping install the new SFMOMA and there's a design show that includes some gorgeous posters for the italian typewriter company Olivetti. A quick GIS for their posters brings up some great stuff:

Olivetti is one of the great designer-friendly companies of the 20th century, both their product-design and their marketing.

From that small but special pantheon which also includes Geigy and Container Corporation of America.

Still find it incredible that, from the early 1960s to the mid-1990s, British nuclear submarines were upholstered in William Morris Tudor Rose fabric. This sample from the HMS Talent. pic.twitter.com/AhNajKUZHf
