what was it like Ned? Tell those of us who havent been able to sleep in in years. give us detail. give us sleep porn.

Bright Future (sunny successor), Sunday, 28 September 2008 21:52 (fifteen years ago) link

i am so jealous of 10.5 hours sleep omg!!!

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 29 September 2008 00:29 (fifteen years ago) link

i had a lovely day consisting of: brunch, a broadway play (not musical), a walk to buy indulgent eye cream, sushi, and a manicure. so don't want to do hw now.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 29 September 2008 00:31 (fifteen years ago) link

tehresa - that sounds FANTASTIC! Wow. 10.5 hours of sleep was great, but remember that I'm probably not going to get much on Monday night since Tues. morning I need to get up at 4:30 a.m. in order to be at the hospital for a daytime clinical shift... so I'm trying to rest up now!

God I want sushi now. Instead: treadmill, then study study study. Why? ANOTHER QUIZ TOMORROW NIGHT, OF COURSE!

Sara R-C, Monday, 29 September 2008 01:16 (fifteen years ago) link

i am procrastinating on this homework. i did not get much sleep last night because a) some "unknown number" called at 3:15 and then around 4:15 there was some weird noise outside, and then by 8 the dog wanted to be walked. ah well, maybe the eye cream will help this.

i forgot to tell you guys (WARNING: MUSHY LOVEY DOVEY ALERT)

.....

while we were back in chicago, jordan's mum took him aside and showed him this antique ring (over 100yrs old) and told him he could give it to me when he's ready (she already has a DIL, so i'm stoked that she'd rather i have it). of course it was all supposed to be secret, but i asked jordan what the big mystery was as soon as he came back in the room and he told me right away (no secrets here, not even good ones!).

i mean, eventually. unless they are in order now. either way: :)

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 29 September 2008 02:36 (fifteen years ago) link

haha! well. i mean, moving here was pretty much like saying 'okay we're pretty committed' i.e. 'engaged'. jordan told me he wanted to give me a ring just before i go back to nz.

don't tell him i told you guys! he'd be so embarrassed!

Sarah Palin isn't dumb, she's post-modern (Rubyredd), Monday, 29 September 2008 02:41 (fifteen years ago) link

That's awesome!

Describe ring, plz. (yes, I'm shallow as hell)

Sara R-C, Monday, 29 September 2008 03:27 (fifteen years ago) link

oh it was sara that got the 10 1/2 hours sleep, not Ned!! obv. i need sleep.

Bright Future (sunny successor), Monday, 29 September 2008 13:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I am horrendously tired and my body is in revolt from having drunk 4 martinis, a bottle or two of wine plus champagne and dessert wine yesterday. This comes on top of friday's 10 hour international free drinks session. I am all ruin.

That is an awesome story RR.

Christopher Blix Hammer (Ed), Monday, 29 September 2008 14:37 (fifteen years ago) link

sara, i didn't get to see the ring, it was all hush-hush! but i think jordan said it was platinum and diamond/s? but we had plans for simple titanium wedding rings, so not sure how the two would go together...

oh man i had horrendous nightmares about murder and torture last night and i am not feeling very good this morning :(

Sarah Palin isn't dumb, she's post-modern (Rubyredd), Monday, 29 September 2008 14:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Yikes - I hate nightmares. I hope your day is better than your night was, RR.

Hmmmmmm - I'm clueless in the area of titanium vs. platinum, but I would never reject platinum because WOW. My rings are both white gold - wedding band = very simple, plain band that could do with anything. Could you put a white gold wedding ring with the engagement ring? Hmmmm... you'd probably have to see these things together, huh.

Ed - that is quite an impressive weekend of intake there. I wish you and your liver the best of luck. ;)

Sunny... I hope you can get a nap at least!

Sara R-C, Monday, 29 September 2008 15:51 (fifteen years ago) link

I am supposed to be going to the gym this evening but I suspect I shall limit myself to sitting in the steam room exuding toxins. Have to be in tip top form for two more birthday parties this weekend, one of them mine.

Christopher Blix Hammer (Ed), Monday, 29 September 2008 15:53 (fifteen years ago) link

sara, no i really want titanium wedding bands! plus DO NOT WANT to spend much $$ on rings. maybe a few hundred for both, max.

There's an I Love TMI?

RR - I have no clue what titanium looks like (er, maybe I should use Teh Google), but maybe it would work fine with platinum? Our wedding bands were not very expensive, if I'm recalling... of course that was 1995, too. Engagement ring cost a lot more.

Sara R-C, Monday, 29 September 2008 17:13 (fifteen years ago) link

I like the idea of titanium wedding bands.

I now remember limoncello, this is sure the root cause of all my woe.

Christopher Blix Hammer (Ed), Monday, 29 September 2008 17:32 (fifteen years ago) link

titanium is a rather please dull grey.

sunny, we gotta get married eventually so i can stay here. just not sure if we'll do it here before the visa is up, or we'll do it after i go back to nz and apply for fiancee visa.

Sarah Palin isn't dumb, she's post-modern (Rubyredd), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 04:32 (fifteen years ago) link

are there legal issues doing it one way or the other?

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 04:33 (fifteen years ago) link

well....let me think about it. i know you get an "easier" path if you go the K1 plus you get to be a citizen after 3 years instead of 5 but I think if you go get married tomorrow they might put you through a little pain but there really nothing they can do about. you can just be all "OMG were so in love we had to be married right now!!!!!!"

let me research it a little more. i know we were trying to decide between the two.

also dont forget matesupover.com which is a bb for people moving to the states mostly on K1 visas

Bright Future (sunny successor), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 04:47 (fifteen years ago) link

oh shit i heard a this american life about someone who was married but her husband died before they finished processing the visa but it was because the gov't people kept postponing the interview or something, and then they tried to deport her. it was super messed up :(

AND OMG I FORGOT TO TELL U GUYS I GOT MY RAY CAESAR ART BOOK TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i pre-ordered it in january, with the expectation that it would be ready in a couple of months, and i waited and waited... and finally it arrived today! it is my second most treasured possession.

re the marriage thing: it's fairly complicated. legally, we can't get married while i'm here on this work visa, because it's considered fraud to come here on a J-1 with the intention to marry or immigrate. so we would have to fabricate a story about meeting over here or something. plus, i don't think i could work for awhile after we got married. i dunno, it's all very confusing. but we can't really plan anything till closer to the end of my visa, since the laws are always changing. it's v v stressful and i'm constantly worrying about it :/

even if you go via K1 visa you wont be able to work for a good 4-5 months once you get to USA.

And, yeah, if you got married now youd just have to be all 'oh hey we didnt realize we'd fall in love , dudes!"

Bright Future (sunny successor), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 15:19 (fifteen years ago) link

anyway, dont stress about it. its all pretty easy in the end.

Bright Future (sunny successor), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 15:20 (fifteen years ago) link

oh ALSO i wanted to tell you to start documenting your love. Youre literally going to have to prove it, so photos of you together, with his family, photos that somehow show you over time to prove youve been physically together for a while. At some point they will ask for written affidavits from friends and family members explaining how you two met, how the person writing met you, their impressions of you when you are together. I think they ask for three of these.

oh and ultimate trump card - get pregnant. DHS likes it when you make americans.

well, i kept every single piece of written correspondence from the 15 months we knew each other before i came here, plus letters and stuff he sent me. and we already have lots of photos. BUT on the visa journey website i read, lots of nzers have said that when they've brought all the relationship proof stuff to the interview, the interviewer hasn't even wanted to see it. i think there isn't much dodginess going on when it comes to K-1 visas for kiwis, so they don't need to much evidence, it's more just all the paperwork and red tape.

xpost to john justen: kozyndan is AWESOME. we have a print of the wave of rabbits. it's not 'art', exactly, but i will send you a freebie copy of our chapbook if we do a second edition (which is looking likely at this stage).
