I totally leaned on ledge's images for the Autechre poll! Otherwise I just post some hueg pictures with some Impact font on it.

I prefer yesterday but they are probably more work.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 21 March 2016 00:37 (eight years ago) link

I drifted off of this thread due to lack of time but I am glad to see that Drugs A. Money has apparently taken on the Royal Trux poll, which I am still excited for but would definitely run with like text-only results

the 'major tom guy' (sleeve), Monday, 21 March 2016 01:17 (eight years ago) link

Ok, now that the Nomination/voting thread for Bauhaus is over can I start the Stereolab voting thread so I can rollout results as soon as the Bauhaus results are over? Or how does it work?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 21 March 2016 18:43 (eight years ago) link

Also I see the usual is top 20 songs and top 5 albums. The scoring that mostly every poll has used for songs is as follows:

Scoring [1:40, 2:36, 3:33, 4:30, 5:28, 6:26, 7:25, 8:24, 9:23, 10:22, 11:21, 12:20, 13:19, 14:18, 15:17, 16:16, 17:15, 18:14, 19:13, 20:12 ]

but what about the top 5 albums? is it: 1:40, 2:36, 3:33, 4:30, 5:28?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 21 March 2016 18:53 (eight years ago) link

You get to choose

Lionel Richie the Wardrobe (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 21 March 2016 19:37 (eight years ago) link

I've used the same scores for the top 5 albums as the top five songs in the past. There's a link to my Smiths spreadsheet near the end of the Smiths results thread, feel free to use that if you like.

Thanks nate!

Who is up next?

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 2 April 2016 16:43 (eight years ago) link

Hendrix or Can would be great!

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 2 April 2016 18:50 (eight years ago) link

70s lite rock going from the enemy to ironic "yacht rock" to essential.

That's a good one.

I'd love to see AM Gold as a companion to some dude's classic rock poll.

Honor thy pisstake as a hidden intention. (WilliamC), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 19:27 (eight years ago) link

That's gonna be a sweet poll, but isn't it a little ways down in the queue?

never ending bath infusion (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 20:03 (eight years ago) link

Ha, I didn't even realize somebody had already gotten in line for that.

Honor thy pisstake as a hidden intention. (WilliamC), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 20:08 (eight years ago) link

It was floated somewhere in the midst of the some dude classic rock ballot/rollout period. Man, what a summer that was.

never ending bath infusion (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 21:09 (eight years ago) link

So Stereolab poll is almost over, who's next?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:03 (eight years ago) link

The queue is basically just a suggestion at this point. If no one steps up in the next day or two, I might get Van Halen underway.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:14 (eight years ago) link

Well, it'd still be appropriate to try and bug whoever's actually next - gr8080 for hard rock/hair metal, Gukbe for Stephen Merritt, or Billy Dods for Fairport, unless I missed those. If they're in the weeds or out to sea, it'd be Z S for Can, some dude for Hendrix, NickB for Genesis, or Veg for Pearl Jam.

never ending bath infusion (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:20 (eight years ago) link

Well, like I said, I'm not gonna muscle anyone out of my way, but if no one ahead of me is ready to go, I'm actually in a good spot to run one over the next 2-3 weeks.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:22 (eight years ago) link

people put their names on this list so long ago, it's really hard rounding them up/reminding them tbh

I'll be very busy in the next month because it's again national fair month and the bar/club I open in the zone is very time consuming this month, but I'll be open afterwards to run the hendrix or can poll if ZS and somedude don't jump in :)

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:33 (eight years ago) link

The Bauhaus poll is over.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:33 (eight years ago) link

"Robots are sexy as shit" - Big Sean (some dude), Thursday, 7 April 2016 23:04 (eight years ago) link

I remember asking ZS/Karl about the Can poll and he didn't seem very enthused about running it, so I'd love to see what you'd fashion out of that, Moka.

Jenny Ondioleeene (Leee), Thursday, 7 April 2016 23:20 (eight years ago) link

I can run a poll if nobody's around, but it has to be for a band I can tolerate.

I can also move the Covers poll up. I volunteered for it back in 2013, and it's looking like it won't happen until 2 or 3 years, which is insane if you think about it.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 7 April 2016 23:24 (eight years ago) link

Excellent I'll wait for Zs to chime in. What about you Eric, want me to help out on the bjork/badu polls?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 April 2016 00:04 (eight years ago) link

Yeah my stereolab poll was in queue for 2.5 years or so. With the current system it's only 2 polls per month... maybe doing simultaneous voting could help so we run 4 polls per month.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 April 2016 00:06 (eight years ago) link

Eric if you do want to run the bjork poll I've got some ideas for the banner graphics so maybe I can help you out with those and you do the numbers/rollout.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 April 2016 06:28 (eight years ago) link

Because I like running polls and I'm interested in the results I'll do Oasis and Pearl Jam (if VG doesn't mind) - can't do graphics though.

nate woolls, Friday, 8 April 2016 06:34 (eight years ago) link

I don't know enough of either bands to provide graphics but I can try.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 April 2016 08:58 (eight years ago) link

It's hard to know any kind of theme to use with either of those bands, they don't really have a look. I'd be happy with just band photos I think, just something to brighten up the rollout a bit.

nate woolls, Friday, 8 April 2016 10:39 (eight years ago) link

For PJ I'd suggest using flannel shirt motifs in the graphics ;-)

willem, Friday, 8 April 2016 11:15 (eight years ago) link

i was going to use the immense archive of ames bros pj tour posters for graphics

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 8 April 2016 16:06 (eight years ago) link

They do have a look! Google Pearl Jam singles or Oasis singles. Pearl Jam does that grunge aesthetic of saturated blurry images. Oasis does either wide shots or closeups of stuff framing everything. A quick sketch in my mind would be have a frame around the banner. Song title in their logo typography, additional ranking data in some other sans font over that kind of photos.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 April 2016 16:21 (eight years ago) link

That's for oasis. Pearl jam would probably be inspired by grunge aesthetics. David Carson style mixed with those saturated photos.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 April 2016 16:22 (eight years ago) link

It obviously needs some polishing but it's a quick sketch. Something that fits each artist's album/singles artwork:

Thank you!

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 April 2016 18:07 (eight years ago) link

let's pool money so that moka can work full time on the ILM polls

Van Horn Street, Friday, 8 April 2016 18:18 (eight years ago) link

I think we should all chip in to a stipend to hire Moka as official ILM Ballot Poll Graphic Designer.

Jenny Ondioleeene (Leee), Friday, 8 April 2016 18:23 (eight years ago) link

beautiful!

Van Horn Street, Friday, 8 April 2016 18:25 (eight years ago) link

Yes, brilliant. Love them.

nate woolls, Friday, 8 April 2016 18:41 (eight years ago) link

Thank you!

I think the trick I think is to emulate the artist's artwork, it's much easier and takes less time than creating a design of your own and it'll fit each artist. There are some artists which make it hard because they don't have any significant personality in their artwork or they shift to much. David Bowie per example doesn't really have any logo/typography he used throughout the years or style of artwork that he followed which I always found odd since he was very aesthetic when it came to his 'characters', didn't seem to put much thought into his album designs, but even there you could probably pick one of his singles covers like this one: http://www.popsike.com/pix/20140118/201022411962.jpg You just need to do the hard light saturated colors (don't know if this is the actual term) in any bowie related photo you pick and a colored frame at the top with the title. It wont scream Bowie because it's just the style of a single cover that he never implemented anywhere else (although the Ziggy album cover also did that hard light thing) but hey, it'll look nice.

In the case of Bjork per example you could probably pick very different styles. Up there I'm using the Medulla/Vespertine look, but if you go back to the Homogenic days she was into digital collages and some sort anime style typography. If you want to be really ambitious you could do different artwork for each song instead of following a template but that is just to much work and noone is getting paid for this haha.
