all set for weekend listening, thanks

sleeve, Friday, 30 December 2016 16:49 (seven years ago) link

Hope you guys enjoy it--thanks for listening! This one was percolating for a long time--some of these tracks have been earmarked for years (Bohannon's "I Found My Love on a Saturday" was the first song at my wedding six years ago!). Real life has almost entirely gotten in the way of making mixes, but I'm always listening (and purchasing, for better or worse) to so much new-to-me music and thinking of mixes I want to make. So really hope to do better next year than the one mix I finished this year. But at least the back catalogue is well over 50 mixes and people seem to trickle in.

Can I poll folks--does anyone here prefer the streaming (mixcloud) set up to downloadable mp3s? It takes a good amount of time to get the mixes on there with timestamped tracklists, but I'd like to have all the old mixes (or at least the best ones) on there, just not sure if it's worth the time...

Thanks again!

Soundslike, Saturday, 31 December 2016 16:38 (seven years ago) link

Personally I much prefer downloads but YMMV. If Mixcloud had a direct download option I wouldn't care either way.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 31 December 2016 16:44 (seven years ago) link

I prefer downloadable as I do all my listening on a Sansa clip or iPod classic.

calstars, Saturday, 31 December 2016 18:50 (seven years ago) link

Great funk mix. I'm new to your blog, but if it's all as good as this new mix, count me in. Thanks for sharing!

mom, Saturday, 31 December 2016 19:05 (seven years ago) link

Thanks guus--I'll always do the downloads (for as long as they last, since some get pulled down for whatever reason), but just wondering if setting up streams for old mixes is worth the time. Young people I talk to seem to stream exclusively, and then only if theres an app (which there is for Mixcloud). But it's probably a rare millenial who is interested in this sort of music...

Soundslike, Saturday, 31 December 2016 22:55 (seven years ago) link

Mom, sorry I missed your comment. Glad you like it! I'd say I put a similarly stupid amount of time and effort into culling, refining, sequencing and "packaging" all the mixes as this one, so you'll hopefully find a lot you like.

Soundslike, Sunday, 1 January 2017 22:03 (seven years ago) link

Always impressed with your mix comps. This one no exception.

As far as my format preference... dealer's choice. I like streaming, so I can listen to it in different places, but I've also downloaded your mixes before. Either way.

pplains, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 16:26 (seven years ago) link

Thanks!

I'll make an effort to upload old mixes for streaming--at least the ones for which I have timestamped tracklists and can quickly get onto Mixcloud.

Where does the email get sent from? Hope you like it!

For everybody else, two new mixes focused on stuff from '83-'85: boogie, post-disco, r&b, pop, elctro, hip-hop, etc., one more up-tempo and the other more down:

calstars, Wednesday, 15 March 2017 16:22 (seven years ago) link

Didn't know I had one! Something Wordpress sends out if you subscribe perhaps? It's a bummer for all blogs that the days of Google Reader ended--have to imagine almost everyone's audience became a fraction of what it was. Part of it was that I could make a new mix every few weeks a decade ago, and I'm lucky if I manage two a year now; but it used to be any mix I put up got hundreds or thousands of downloads, now they're lucky to top a hundred or two. Oh well--still makes me happy to put them together, and if a few folks find things that are new to them then I'm content.

It likely won't last long, but thanks to Mediafire doing away with file size restrictions, I've finally shared the *truly* complete '1981' box set, with the never-before-shared-online 'Briefcase' disc. Brings the total collection to well over 500 tracks, 28 hours or so. Enjoy, and pass the blog post along. Thanks!

Thanks guys--hope you're able to download before they inevitably go down--got posted to a website that sent about 3,000 people so far today, so it'll likely get taken down much sooner than expected. It's still fun thinking how so much of this music could be new to somebody--heck, 25 year olds today were 12 when I first put this out! Wish I still had the time to make a so many mixes--but I will say only getting to do a couple a year means I really put them together with a lot of thought.

For whatever reason, I've found recently that if you close mediafire, and click the link again a minute or two later, it will usually then work. That seems to be the case with this one--the file is still up for download.

If they eventually do go down, I'll upload all the mixes to the Mixcloud account so at least they are streamable.

Thanks!

Thanks guys, hope you're digging it. Besides my stated ulterior motive of getting people to buy music they didn't know/have, my other motive with the Musicophilia blog has been trying to parlay the popularity of the post-punk/'1981' stuff into some ears on all the other stuff I love. So if one or two people who never thought they liked 80s funk/boogie/post-disco/R&B/etc. hear these mixes and dig them, I'll be happy ; )

I've put up another collection, gathering the late-1960s to mid-1970s globe-spanning, genre-defying 'Musique du Monde' series, including the 'Le Tour du Monde' mixes, the 'Le Mystere de la Musique' mixes, and a couple of other related mixes including an homage exploring the roots of Broadcast/Stereolab.

that's a formidable roster

(do you allow yourself to use bootleg stuff in your mixes? Because some of Gil Melle's soundtrack work would fit right in there but almost none of it has been commercially available)

I'm sure I'd use things that fit, even if they were never officially released--thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely check out Gil Melle!
