The Aaron Bady "top secret note" is what elevated that explainer to a classic I think

http://recode.net/2016/01/27/mossberg-twitter-has-become-secret-handshake-software/

Basically, Twitter has become what I call “secret-handshake software” — something that’s so complicated that, as in a secret society, only insiders know the rituals that unlock its power.

That has to stop. New Twitter CEO (and co-founder) Jack Dorsey has to tear out a lot of this stuff by the roots and rebuild the service in a clearer, more accessible form. The trick will be to find a way to do this that’s both inviting for new users and still attractive to Twitter addicts.

I don't think this is possible for a few reasons:

1. Making Twitter welcoming to late adopters would be kind of an Eternal September for the power users, I suspect; they also already have a pretty ugly troll problem without making the app convenient for dummies
2. Part of making Twitter approachable for people like me would mean taking an axe to several things that are integral to Twitter: the 140 limit, the lack of privacy, and really, anything resembling a cool factor (things people like me do are not cool)
3. Most of the people who are not on Twitter have nothing they want to contribute to Twitter; the interface is not the barrier, you're trying to sell record players to people who don't buy vinyl
4. The functionality they are competing with is me and/or people like me collecting a bunch of handles in a bookmarks folder and occasionally using the "open all in tabs" command. No login, no buy-in, no compulsion to stay up-to-date.

shareholders in the 21st century don't give a shit about profitable, dividends are for chumps, what matters is GROWTH so you can sell your shares to some idiot when the company peaks. BTW shareholders are not allowed to be the "some idiot" in this scenario; company peaks are never in the past.

i only skimmed this piece but i can tell its bad im sensitive to bad tech punditry smell http://www.newyorker.com/tech/elements/the-end-of-twitter

For instance, new users might be confused about what a retweet is, or the difference between that and a “quote tweet” (where you say more about something you’re re-posting). And they surely might not understand the need to place a period before the handle of a user, when that handle is at the very start of a tweet you compose, yet not elsewhere in the tweet.

Maybe? But this took me, max, 3 days to figure out? And I am not some kind of social media genius. I am 100% legit OK with Twitter not being dominated by people who can't handle this, though Twitter, as a business, is probably not OK with this.

If Twitter’s real-time feed is its most powerful asset (and it is), it’s not difficult to see a future in which Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, or even a newcomer like Peach (yes, I am citing Peach) focus enough on real-time news that they obviate the need for Twitter’s narrow, noisy, and oft-changing ideas on social interaction.

mookieproof, Friday, 29 January 2016 17:48 (eight years ago) link

afaict LinkedIn is useful for meeting other people who care about LinkedIn

its subtle brume (DJP), Friday, 29 January 2016 17:48 (eight years ago) link

linkedin is useful if you like sending spam messages to everyone you know regarding linkedin

linkedin is good for getting jobs if you are extremely lazy and have certain technical skills highly valued in the tech industry

lag∞n, Friday, 29 January 2016 17:53 (eight years ago) link

linkedin also good for latently keeping track of people you used to know and if they might be useful to you

petulant dick master (silby), Friday, 29 January 2016 17:55 (eight years ago) link

the slightly less lazy version lol

I found my current job on LinkedIn. It's definitely a useful job-hunting tool. Its "social" aspects are virtually nil - part of my job is to post news related to my industry on our LinkedIn page, and Nobody Gives A Fuck.

im told molly is v cool and nice irl and i'm really impressed by her art, but like, doxxing an aid worker in a warzone bcz she said something you didn't like on line is beyond the pale imo

^^^^^^ and if you follow or know enough of them these feuds can even take up your whole TL & fuck up irl friendships
