i missed trill trying to get actively banned, what was going on with that?

(worst thing about suspended accounts is you can't see the history so you can't reconstruct wth drama led to it)

This is true but very few people go into detail about the way in which government-aligned PR people use their influence over the western press, which had been an area of his focus for a while. He put up a long (and broadly accurate if not particularly well written) piece about it about a week before he was banned. Given that Prince Alwaleed bin Talal has over $1bn worth of stock, i'd imagine his complaints would get picked up more quickly than Sarah Jeong's. Swarthy Villain also spends the bulk of his time deliberately annoying other people in a way that could be interpreted as harrassment so there's more plausible deniability than there would be in taking out a more serious critic. It's still a bit of a stretch though.

He was trolling a bunch people people and said "lol if i don't get suspended for this, i never will". He self-deleted and comes back all the time, though i don't know how much difference it makes.

I do want to apologize for @-ing Megan the first time. Honestly, had I known that Megan was struggling with health issues and grief, I would have kept my snark to myself. And I am painfully sorry that this blogpost discloses her survivor status. If it hadn’t been a central fact in the incident, I would have left it out.

And I’m sorry to Sarah K. I never wanted to dig up the past—because it undoubtedly means she (and Megan as well, honestly) will be harassed all over again.

this is such disingenuous smarmy fucking garbage

lag∞n, Friday, 29 January 2016 15:11 (eight years ago) link

she omits her own acidic @ replies to the ongoing conversation at the time to create the impression she just sent a couple of innocent & barely relevant tweets before becoming a victim of the unhinged kilpatricks

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 29 January 2016 15:12 (eight years ago) link

I read that and I'm more confused now

so some dude from jacobin disliked an offhand tweet and went from being a little too angry (he was having a bad week) to being the maddest ever?

idk anything about jeong, is she a good writer, what's the score here

never mind, HOOS has filled me in during the xps

the images where she is like "I never said this very specific phrase, check it out" is pretty ridiculous

matt bruenig wrote a post about the whole thing then... deleted it

lag∞n, Friday, 29 January 2016 15:18 (eight years ago) link

it came back up because she said something about bernie-bros and ppl clowned her and some people mentioned that so she wrote a huge post on just that and then encouraged everyone to i guess report every account clowning her and i guess meanwhile she claims she's been harassed or something.

Option ARMs and de Man (s.clover), Friday, 29 January 2016 15:19 (eight years ago) link

but as far as i can tell this isn't like gater stuff (tho she had a screenshot of one v. nasty tweet from an egg) but just children calling one another names on the internet

http://recode.net/2016/01/27/mossberg-twitter-has-become-secret-handshake-software/

Basically, Twitter has become what I call “secret-handshake software” — something that’s so complicated that, as in a secret society, only insiders know the rituals that unlock its power.

That has to stop. New Twitter CEO (and co-founder) Jack Dorsey has to tear out a lot of this stuff by the roots and rebuild the service in a clearer, more accessible form. The trick will be to find a way to do this that’s both inviting for new users and still attractive to Twitter addicts.

I don't think this is possible for a few reasons:

1. Making Twitter welcoming to late adopters would be kind of an Eternal September for the power users, I suspect; they also already have a pretty ugly troll problem without making the app convenient for dummies
2. Part of making Twitter approachable for people like me would mean taking an axe to several things that are integral to Twitter: the 140 limit, the lack of privacy, and really, anything resembling a cool factor (things people like me do are not cool)
3. Most of the people who are not on Twitter have nothing they want to contribute to Twitter; the interface is not the barrier, you're trying to sell record players to people who don't buy vinyl
4. The functionality they are competing with is me and/or people like me collecting a bunch of handles in a bookmarks folder and occasionally using the "open all in tabs" command. No login, no buy-in, no compulsion to stay up-to-date.

shareholders in the 21st century don't give a shit about profitable, dividends are for chumps, what matters is GROWTH so you can sell your shares to some idiot when the company peaks. BTW shareholders are not allowed to be the "some idiot" in this scenario; company peaks are never in the past.

lag∞n, Friday, 29 January 2016 17:22 (eight years ago) link

For instance, new users might be confused about what a retweet is, or the difference between that and a “quote tweet” (where you say more about something you’re re-posting). And they surely might not understand the need to place a period before the handle of a user, when that handle is at the very start of a tweet you compose, yet not elsewhere in the tweet.

Maybe? But this took me, max, 3 days to figure out? And I am not some kind of social media genius. I am 100% legit OK with Twitter not being dominated by people who can't handle this, though Twitter, as a business, is probably not OK with this.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 29 January 2016 17:23 (eight years ago) link

If Twitter’s real-time feed is its most powerful asset (and it is), it’s not difficult to see a future in which Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, or even a newcomer like Peach (yes, I am citing Peach) focus enough on real-time news that they obviate the need for Twitter’s narrow, noisy, and oft-changing ideas on social interaction.

ppl been saying this abt twitter since like a month after it launched
