aaaahh i can't wait for everyone else to hear these songs

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2016 08:30 (eight years ago) link

ikwym but as soon as i started putting together an alt producer list of my own i saw the sense of it, tracks become too distinct in a way that isnt held together by familiarity the way it is here

put more simply, "X" is pointedly different to "(produced by)"

r|t|c, Thursday, 28 January 2016 08:37 (eight years ago) link

i make an exception for tom shorterz who could have done the whole thing and every desired flavour would be fire. mildly scandalous omission imho

r|t|c, Thursday, 28 January 2016 08:41 (eight years ago) link

wait this isn't out until APRIL???

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2016 09:15 (eight years ago) link

i liked the last album more than most but she def seemed to have gotten gummed up creatively, this seems like a real passion project so i'm happy for her

J0rdan S., Sunday, 31 January 2016 08:08 (eight years ago) link

it looks like they're doing a continuous mix of this one too, the one for red was def way better than the album tracklist

J0rdan S., Sunday, 31 January 2016 08:09 (eight years ago) link

Feel like this could be pretty big.

Katy B X Chris Lorenzo - I Wanna Be

not what i'd expect from chris lorenzo but it's v lush

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 29 March 2016 21:43 (eight years ago) link

drip-feeding this over four months when it was all ready to go was such an incredibly stupid decision

sort of counterintuitive but the range and variety of styles mean it works much better as an album - these pre-release singles feel much more random just tossed out by themselves without even a video. (plus none of them are the ones i would have personally chosen!) ("calm down" was a very low-key lead but it did its job well enough, then i'd've gone with "dreamerz" or "lose your head") (well i'd've gone with "come a little closer" but god knows when that'll emerge now)

cher guevara (lex pretend), Wednesday, 30 March 2016 10:56 (eight years ago) link

there's a video for the craig david one. "i wanna be" is pretty great

art baengels (monotony), Wednesday, 30 March 2016 20:56 (eight years ago) link

I'm not sure this is a great album, but it's a good album with great moments. For something that seems intended as a celebration of clubbing life it feels a little lacklustre. The outro is a lot better than any ballad from the last album though.

four weeks pass...

Is anyone else listening to this album now that it's out? I.... kinda enjoy it - it's great for gardening - but haven't been obsessed with any of the songs yet.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Saturday, 30 April 2016 09:43 (seven years ago) link

last four-five songs is an incredible stretch and I love the center (i wanna be/calm down)

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Saturday, 30 April 2016 13:29 (seven years ago) link

yeah the second version of 'Honey' is terrific.

Still listening -- no opinion yet on the whole.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 30 April 2016 13:32 (seven years ago) link

ugh this has more non-entities than any other Katy release

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 30 April 2016 19:01 (seven years ago) link

Feel like the back half of this is much stronger than the first half, as an album it suffers again from poor sequencing and a general feel of trying to cover too many bases at once, although Lose Your Head is excellent.

I've only listened twice but Calm Down and Dark Delirium were the real standouts, sweeping and slinky at the same time. It made me think that a lush, Philly garage sound would be the very best of all possible looks for Katy.

Matt DC, Saturday, 30 April 2016 19:01 (seven years ago) link

Craig David is so unwelcome on this as well.

Matt DC, Saturday, 30 April 2016 19:07 (seven years ago) link

i'm also a huge fan of the all-katy "rumble"

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Saturday, 30 April 2016 19:15 (seven years ago) link

i have heard this album and would rather discuss longneck's gardening. tired of picking the bones out of more ifs buts and maybes

r|t|c, Saturday, 30 April 2016 19:27 (seven years ago) link

it'll prob grow on me a bit tho... credit to katy that it's a lot more coherent than it rly ought to have been

kinda surprised ppl are big on the back half. if it isn't credited already i bet a fiver that kelis 'get along with you' was listened to sometime around the writing & recording of 'dreamerz'

r|t|c, Saturday, 30 April 2016 19:40 (seven years ago) link

I'm not sure she's particularly good at the Radio 1 Big Weekend bangers, or at least not when it feels like she's explicitly writing with that in mind.

J-Hus's verse isn't technically remotely impressive but he certainly has presence, whereas I'm pretty sure you could pull a string in D Double's back that makes him go 'b-d-buk-buk, mui mui, urrr urrr' by this point.

Matt DC, Saturday, 30 April 2016 19:49 (seven years ago) link

'honey', 'chase me', 'i wanna be', 'calm down'... i think katy has the maturity, stride, swag now to pull more confidently towards teedra and this album feels at its best when it reflects or even just suggests that growth

r|t|c, Saturday, 30 April 2016 20:02 (seven years ago) link

just stunned every time by the foul meandering career-low-for-everyone-involved dirge that is 'who am i'. advise to replace with its (okayish) wookie remix if u can find it

r|t|c, Saturday, 30 April 2016 20:16 (seven years ago) link

I find it very unlikely that this it represents a career low for Diplo but yeah that one was an obvious dud. Everything about Craig David's vocal just underlines how great Katy is at phrasing and it isn't even a good song.

Matt DC, Saturday, 30 April 2016 20:21 (seven years ago) link

yes u heard right. it's worse than "bitch i'm madonna"

r|t|c, Saturday, 30 April 2016 20:27 (seven years ago) link

Given the way Rinse is going the next one will be full of bewildering collaborations with yuppie minimal grime nerds and assorted PC Music bellends so enjoy this one while you can.

Matt DC, Saturday, 30 April 2016 20:37 (seven years ago) link

Since you asked (lol) I filled a medium sized container with twigs and sacks of old leaves and then put up a large trampoline. And while I didn't listen to this all the time, after I reached a certain point of exhaustion it was all I could listen to. However I suspect that the album's palatable blandness rather than its soaring excellence was the main reason why it worked so well. Katy can be incredibly relatable once she has the right material to work with but if the material is just below par her music is just there.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Saturday, 30 April 2016 20:49 (seven years ago) link

Given that Katy is the principal songwriter, anything below par is primarily her fault, even if she is attempting a forced rictus grin with Diplo twatting around behind her or whatever.

Matt DC, Saturday, 30 April 2016 20:57 (seven years ago) link

Sometimes the lyrics are there but the production just lacks the drama to make it happen, though I guess it speaks to her limitations as a singer too. I do love her singing so it breaks my heart to even type that. However, there is a chance that this album could be a grower. It's just that there's so little on it to pull me back in.

"who am i" was originally katy solo (and better, not so much to really rep for) and the craig david verse feels v patched in at the last minute. the real crime is cutting the other craig david collab which is properly great (hoping it'll pop up on his album)

Thanks. I must admit that I was blackmailed by my neighbours and mother in law into doing it though.
