I'm with brad on this one, walking in the wind is the second or third best track on the whole damn thing

MrExplorer, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 03:01 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, 'what a feeling' is probably the best song from made in am. It is right above from 'wolves', 'temporary fix', 'walking in the wind' (why did they insist to put their best songs as bonus tracks) and 'perfect'.

Nourry, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 03:05 (eight years ago) link

What a feeling
Wolves
Temporary fix
Walking in the wind
Perfect
Olivia
Never enough
End of the day
I want to write you a song
Hey angel
Drag me down
History
AM
Love you goodbye
Long way down
If I could fly
Infinity

Nourry, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 03:12 (eight years ago) link

Why do you put Hey Angel in the middle? It's an easy #17 for me and I'm curious what it's defenders have to say that they like about it?

Also I'll be a lone defender of If I Could Fly rn i guess: I think its got a really well pieced together set of lyrics, great melody, everyone sounds super sincere on their lines, and the second to last chorus where all four of them take a line is just perfection. I can see that you guys clearly like fast 1D better than slow 1D, and If I Could Fly certainly is sappy, but I can't see why its so low in people's opinions here

MrExplorer, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 03:19 (eight years ago) link

Hey Angel reminds me Robbie Williams' millennium, which for me is a good sign, and it works perfectly as a first song for the album. I do prefer fast 1D, when they go slow they tend to a coldplayish vibe, but 'fireproof ' and 'night changes' are two of my favorite 1D songs and they're very slow, as you say. So... Yeah.

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 29 January 2016 05:22 (eight years ago) link

it's got more of a ryan tedder vibe than i was expecting

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 29 January 2016 05:24 (eight years ago) link

yeah it's kinda wack... the chorus is all wrong

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 January 2016 05:37 (eight years ago) link

i think it's aiiiight

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 29 January 2016 05:38 (eight years ago) link

but leaving one direction to do music like this kinda feels like extra hair splitting

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 29 January 2016 05:39 (eight years ago) link

hey its one of those blossoming vaginas

Spottie, Friday, 29 January 2016 05:39 (eight years ago) link

extreme hair splitting*

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 29 January 2016 05:39 (eight years ago) link

well judging on this he certainly internalized the structure of one direction's singles even if the window dressing is all different

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 January 2016 05:40 (eight years ago) link

Ever since that Fader profile Zayn did last fall (where he's spilling orange smoothie all over his chin on the magazine cover) revealed that he is an intensely uninteresting person, I knew that when he talked about the band holding him back from playing #realmusic etc I knew that his new shit was gonna be some nick jonas/chris brown/weeknd ripoff hybrid. And look at what we have here.

It's decent but

MrExplorer, Friday, 29 January 2016 08:42 (eight years ago) link

Have you guys read that interview? So much gag-inducing inflammatory bs. He calls 1D "generic as fuck" and then turns around and makes sure his first single sounds like everything on the radio. Like I said, you could tell this was gonna be the case, but hearing it now makes me taste the bile all over again

MrExplorer, Friday, 29 January 2016 08:46 (eight years ago) link

Yes but he's all grown up now. I mean, he swears and everything.

groovypanda, Friday, 29 January 2016 09:09 (eight years ago) link

the song IS more 'adult' sounding (adult meaning moody) than the average 1D single, but its still pretty generic. which wouldnt actually be a problem if the chorus actually felt like one, and the paradise/war zone lyric didnt sound like nonsense. bit of a letdown. it sounds a bit over produced too.

StillAdvance, Friday, 29 January 2016 11:01 (eight years ago) link

What a tiresome song. It's like he wants to sing Usher's "Climax" and what emerges is a Tedder ballad.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 29 January 2016 11:51 (eight years ago) link

even though i like one direction's music i thought his argument against their music was pretty cogent and understandable

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 January 2016 14:36 (eight years ago) link

yeah i mean clearly it's possible to sing on those records and want to do something different. i thought it'd be more different from One Direction than this is, though!

apple bottom steen, HOOS with the fur (some dude), Friday, 29 January 2016 14:37 (eight years ago) link

yeah especially cuz he reportedly isn't working with big producers i'm surprised he went so pop

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 January 2016 14:38 (eight years ago) link

Didn't work for Charlie Busted, did it?

Mark G, Friday, 29 January 2016 14:39 (eight years ago) link

well he's working with Malay so i guess i was expecting something slightly more Frank Ocean-ish

apple bottom steen, HOOS with the fur (some dude), Friday, 29 January 2016 14:46 (eight years ago) link

It's The Weeknd with less drugs and more Ryan Tedder!

the mind reels at the idea of Zayn confessing in song dark thoughts to a cab driver.

ok i want this to fail spectacularly so i can have zayn's fightstar

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 29 January 2016 15:18 (eight years ago) link

i wasn't sure what to expect -- even from the interviews and such it wasn't clear whether zayn would actually be able to make any decent r&b like he seemed to want to. so no, this is not really a disappointment to me. it's actually pretty good. obviously it's aiming for the center of the pop audience with a chorus like that, but the production on the verses at least nudges the sonic palette outward a bit compared to what plays there. (on that note i am confused by the thought above that this sounds like everything else on the radio. like, where? obvious r&b 'influence' aside, nick jonas this is not. it's also clearly not 'trying' to be "climax" with a chorus that dramatic. nope!)

I'm still of the opinion that this sounds like a slightly white washed the Weeknd album cut (1D is better off without him imho, and I'm happy about that, so Zayn can chase the trends all he wants as far as I'm concerned), but the more I hear Pillowtalk the more irresistible it becomes. I'll certainly take Zayn's voice over the Weeknd's any day lol, although I will say the mononymous ZAYN is a little bit annoying (is that just me?)

MrExplorer, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 05:24 (eight years ago) link

Related to the above, I've been thinking about this nose post constantly in relation to ZAYN and his new tune:

under prolonged exposure everyone ends up liking everything so stated denial of pleasure becomes irrelevant. this isn't to negate negative criticism, criticism is always encouraged...but it isn't law. putting criticism in the box of personal interest is more rarely than not uninteresting.

publicly stating musical displeasure in a fashion of "i don't like this song" seems kinda outdated bc you're setting yourself up for limitations. i think nothing grows on anyone....a part of you knows immediately if you like something or not, the "growing on" portion consists of finding the vulnerability required to admit pleasure.

ok i like this one

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 February 2016 13:57 (eight years ago) link

yeah, it's way better than 'pillowtalk'. with this one i'm starting to have some expectations about what's coming from zayn.

Nourry, Thursday, 18 February 2016 14:30 (eight years ago) link

for some reasons i listened to this once and immediately had to go listen to "the lion sleeps tonight"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2016 14:35 (eight years ago) link

two weeks pass...

This is the most ridiculous tracklist ever

Nourry, Monday, 7 March 2016 20:48 (eight years ago) link

i feel like there should be a Zayn thread just because i click on this thread because it's a One Direction thread and i'm still pretty dubious about his solo stuff

I can pretty much guarantee that the tracklisting will be more interesting than the actual music, if only marginally so.

the typography of the song titles ;_;

i'm sort of surprised he can't sell any of these songs memorably, they're forgettable and i think it's largely due to him. "like i would" is just wooden oversinging from start to end

like it's really not a great sign when i'm thinking "man, nick jonas would sound so much better on this"
