Michael Moore is good in longform conversation vs. TV soundbites.

... (Eazy), Wednesday, 27 January 2016 04:35 (eight years ago) link

man the maron intro is just so unbearable though, the amy schumer thing, i have this awful image of the kind of posture of maron when he is Laying It Down on the mic, it is in some sense derivative of the framing used to portray lester bangs in almost famous, does he realise how much he has just fully come to embody this exact like Conservative Radio Truth Teller archetype

bloat laureate (schlump), Wednesday, 27 January 2016 04:45 (eight years ago) link

Yeah that Amy Schumer thing was pretty questionable from mr comedy ethics inquisitor

"Some comics you never heard of said some stuff yadda yadda yadda"

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Wednesday, 27 January 2016 14:12 (eight years ago) link

lol at marc kicking off his impassioned defence of amy schumer with a tale about how he once put together a total sausagefest of a standup night then magnanimously let her go on cuz she was jeselnik's girlfriend

also this was in 2011 when she was already pretty well-established as a comic and he apparently knew fuck-all about her

Butt here is always time for the John Mayer Trio or Sting. (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 27 January 2016 14:21 (eight years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Dug the Cintra Wilson/Zach G ep. Two interesting convos for different reasons.

Darkest Cosmologist junk (kingfish), Tuesday, 16 February 2016 21:49 (eight years ago) link

long one w friedkin today

johnny crunch, Thursday, 25 February 2016 14:35 (eight years ago) link

I just caught up on a couple I'd not gotten to yesterday: Flea/Trujillo and Herb Alpert. Maron's musician interviews are definitely less painful now than they once were.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 25 February 2016 14:39 (eight years ago) link

Only partway into Friedkin (2+ hours long), but really into it.

... (Eazy), Saturday, 27 February 2016 14:54 (eight years ago) link

Is that the longest single WTF episode? It's up there, and it really started to overstay its welcome by the end (Jesus stuff), but I loved when Friedkin went off on 35mm print fetishists.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 27 February 2016 14:56 (eight years ago) link

a funny part is how little marc makes of friedkin saying he used to run practice w the 80s celtics! that is amazing & rad but obv marc has no ability to engage w it on any level, which is fine to be fair

johnny crunch, Saturday, 27 February 2016 15:05 (eight years ago) link

I prefer a host who doesn't care about that kind of stuff

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Saturday, 27 February 2016 20:16 (eight years ago) link

three weeks pass...

Todd Rundgren tomorrow. Should be interesting.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 20 March 2016 21:12 (eight years ago) link

The Herb Alpert one was good and so was the Michael Rapaport one, because they both talked so much that they blocked Marc out.

Josefa, Monday, 21 March 2016 02:44 (eight years ago) link

Friedkin was that way, too. Great interview, like an entire audiobook at 2.5 hours.

... (Eazy), Monday, 21 March 2016 04:01 (eight years ago) link

lol @ Rundgren geeking out about Melt Banana

circa1916, Monday, 21 March 2016 13:25 (eight years ago) link

caught up with the michael rapaport episode over the weekend, gave up when both guest and host started bitching about divorce and child support payments

Upset by racist left wingers calling me an egg (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 21 March 2016 14:24 (eight years ago) link

I can't believe I made it through the whole Al Lubel interview. The guy was so insufferable that even Marc let out a little fake muffled laugh at one line toward the end of the interview as if to say "get the fuck out of my garage".

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 24 March 2016 17:46 (eight years ago) link

That dude's still around?! Man. I remember his bit being like a singing intro to his act and his strongest line was "it's a good thing my parents didn't name me Lou because then I'd be Lou Lubel..."

I've only been dipping in when there's a guest I'm interested in, and I'm very interested in the John Lurie one coming up.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 16:52 (eight years ago) link

^this delivered imo

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Friday, 8 April 2016 17:09 (eight years ago) link

really touching seeing his loneliness and need for connection creep out from behind that curmudgeonly wall. his Lyme disease stories were terrifying. can't imagine living with that.

circa1916, Friday, 8 April 2016 17:18 (eight years ago) link

jon lurie ep one of the best for a long time for sure

a lad of balls (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 8 April 2016 17:51 (eight years ago) link

Maron says a few times in the introduction "We had a dinner together afterwards" and so I was expecting Lurie to punch him out or something.

... (Eazy), Saturday, 9 April 2016 16:48 (eight years ago) link

Today's show blew my mind - I somehow didn't realize that these issues exist for people, or at least that said issues can last an entire lifetime.

Crazy Eddie & Jesus the Kid (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 11 April 2016 12:11 (eight years ago) link

The Nikki Glaser one?

(BTW is it now impossible to download this podcast? Looks like there's just a player and no link.

Yep, that's the one.

And I noticed the same thing about downloads - it seems impossible to do it anymore.

I still see the dl links @
http://wtfpod.libsyn.com/

but idk I never try to save them I just stream

johnny crunch, Monday, 11 April 2016 18:44 (eight years ago) link

I use Pocket Casts instead of the Apple Podcasts app and I vastly prefer the experience fwiw.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 11 April 2016 18:48 (eight years ago) link

I use Pocket Casts for android. It's not perfect, but worth the 3 or so bucks.

how's life, Monday, 11 April 2016 18:51 (eight years ago) link

I still use an iPod :/

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Monday, 11 April 2016 19:24 (eight years ago) link

I lost my iPod right after Christmas. 6th Gen Classic. I used it every day for years for all my music and podcasts and everything, with just some shitty $5 case to protect it that apparently rendered it invincible. It's still somewhere in the house, but god knows where.

how's life, Monday, 11 April 2016 19:30 (eight years ago) link

Player FM for android also works well for me

You should only listen to WTF on pressed vinyl

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Monday, 11 April 2016 19:43 (eight years ago) link

Do NOT give Marc any ideas, dude.

a spate of non-fatal hammer attacks (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 11 April 2016 21:34 (eight years ago) link

i use instacast. they've stopped updating the app but it still works & i love it

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 11 April 2016 22:55 (eight years ago) link

WTF is on Spotify now fwiw (which is how I've started listening to it).

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 01:38 (eight years ago) link

hmm i can't find it there. is it only on android?

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 01:59 (eight years ago) link

Maybe? I can only get to it on the mobile app, not the desktop one.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 02:10 (eight years ago) link

I like the podcast addict app on android

los blue jeans, Thursday, 14 April 2016 00:12 (eight years ago) link

Only drawback of Pocket Cast vs iOS podcast app is that you can't search for a name and find all the podcasts that person has done. More than outweighed by not being a giant piece of shit like the iOS podcast app.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 14 April 2016 01:08 (eight years ago) link

This Julia L-D episode is excruciating, but I'm making myself listen to the whole thing

Crazy Eddie & Jesus the Kid (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 22 April 2016 16:27 (seven years ago) link

I figure she'd be a decent interview. Or is it Maron himself that ruins it?

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Friday, 22 April 2016 16:32 (seven years ago) link

Folks will probably disagree with me, but I feel like Marc's doing fine and trying to warm things up. I don't know if Julia really is into being interviewed.

Crazy Eddie & Jesus the Kid (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 22 April 2016 16:35 (seven years ago) link

The new Louis CK one on the other hand is pretty interesting. At least the half I heard. Basically a Horace and Pete making-of.

circa1916, Friday, 22 April 2016 17:23 (seven years ago) link

^^Yeah! I never saw "Louie" but this new thing seems worth a watch.

Crazy Eddie & Jesus the Kid (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 22 April 2016 19:14 (seven years ago) link

Mentioned it on the Wire thread - the David Simon one from last week is good.

... (Eazy), Friday, 22 April 2016 19:15 (seven years ago) link

David Simon is a p serious dude.
