baah using the lightening port for a headphone jack seems like such a shitty idea, just keep the goddamned jack you don't need to invent an new kind of headphone cable you fucks

Lightning* port obv

marcos, Friday, 8 January 2016 03:47 (eight years ago) link

So sick of carting adapters around. It's bad enough with laptops -- by the time you have all those you need, the laptop is even bulkier and less wieldy than it would have been if they'd just included the damn ports. Lightning for audio-out is the worst yet: the number of unanticipated places it's useful to be able to plug straight in is huge, so I'll end up toting the adapter everywhere.

What does it get them anyway, except more MFI cash? They can make it thinner if they like - the iPhone still isn't as thin as the iPod Touch -- and they can make it waterproof too. Fuckers.

stet, Friday, 8 January 2016 11:41 (eight years ago) link

I remember when Nokias didn't have standard headphone port either, and that was shit. Didn't Nintendo try to have proprietary audio-out on a DS once? That didn't last.

stet, Friday, 8 January 2016 11:42 (eight years ago) link

Oh yeah - I had a Sony Ericsson that you needed a dongle adaptor to use regular headphones with. Crazy times.

When do we think new Mac Minis are coming? Does Apple care any more?

http://appleinsider.com/articles/16/01/08/rumor-apple-to-debut-bluetooth-earbuds-alongside-iphone-7-with-truly-wireless-left-right-earpieces

I'd lose these so quick.

I love the idea of wireless headphones, but recently switched back to wired from some bluetooth ones. It was just annoying to keep them charged

Jeff, Friday, 8 January 2016 20:45 (eight years ago) link

Just when the current earpod line is actually sounding good, Apple has to turn them into walkie talkies. Fuck.

For serious iOS development, which one of these versions of Xcode do I want? The beta one? The regular one? Which one do most developers use?

markers, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 21:08 (eight years ago) link

You don't need to use a beta unless you are an established developer trying to be ready with new OS compatibility and features for a commercial product on day 1 of general availability.

petulant dick master (silby), Wednesday, 27 January 2016 21:35 (eight years ago) link

grab regular unless you're developing stuff specifically with unreleased features, like a future version of mac/ios

To actually set the date back that far manually is quite laborious, requiring lots of scrolling, saving the time and then re-entering the time and date settings to scroll some more. Users are not likely to do it by accident, although pranksters have taken to bricking Apple Store demo units.

But there is a possibility that a malicious attacker could trick an iOS device connected to a network set to automatically adjusting its time settings into setting the date to 1 January 1970 by pretending to be a time server. A hacker could brick every 64-bit iPhone connected to a public Wi-Fi network, for instance.

Users curious about the bug have reportedly bricked their devices trying to disprove the reports on Reddit, ending up having to have the iOS devices replaced by Apple. The Guardian suggests that you do not try it.

hey y'all, can someone legit explain the point of making phones thinner and thinner to me? Bcz it seems to be what Apple is hellbent on doing but they've already got a product that is so thin that it's become difficult to use. What is the appeal of thinner and thinner? do people truly want this?

eventually it will be bendable/foldable i think is the end goal

unleashed profanity-laced tirade (Spottie), Monday, 7 March 2016 19:20 (eight years ago) link

We had the same thin-obsessed execs at Amazon. Not sure what it's all about. The latest Kindle (Voyage) is basically sharp on the edges, which is uncomfortably thin. The iPhone 6/6s have that stupid camera lens bump, which could have meant like 50% more battery life if they had just made the phone as thick as the camera module.

schwantz, Monday, 7 March 2016 19:25 (eight years ago) link

that is so crazy to me, like how much thicker is the bump than the rest of it??? it seems like making it microns thinner and having a bump is SO much more of a nuisance than making it a hair thicker and having everything be flush

With more battery!

schwantz, Monday, 7 March 2016 19:46 (eight years ago) link

I think thinness still signifies cutting-edge in consumers' minds (no pun intended). As the market matures there are fewer of those signifiers left.

Alba, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 01:16 (eight years ago) link

I kind of like the rumors about a 4" iphone, the SE or whatever

OTM. I lost my paperwhite and figured I'd step up to the latest and greatest, but it feels like a step back.

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 9 March 2016 00:56 (eight years ago) link

thinner the better yo

portumnes (alomar lines), Wednesday, 9 March 2016 07:51 (eight years ago) link

Definitely feels like thinness = number of blades on the razor so far as empty consumer status signifiers go. The prospect of folding screens is all very well but we'll need new tech for that, they can't just keep hammering it thinner until it bends.

barbarian radge (NotEnough), Wednesday, 9 March 2016 12:42 (eight years ago) link

the iphone ALREADY bent

I'm cool with thinner. Make it so you can't see the phone outline in my pocket.

they can't even read off the teleprompter without awkward pauses.

I'm probably gonna get one of these new iPads, thanks to Finnair for canceling a long-haul flight in january so that by EU law they had to give me 600 euros

happy about the small phone but the names is indicative of their current lack of imagination. also fk 16gb that's disrespectful.

pastoral fantasy (jed_), Monday, 21 March 2016 18:12 (eight years ago) link

a 64gb model will be available too, but yeah please stop pretending that 48gb is worth $100, Apple

Lee626, Monday, 21 March 2016 18:16 (eight years ago) link

yeah - such bullshit that they went with baseline 16gb again

Nhex, Monday, 21 March 2016 18:17 (eight years ago) link
