hey did we not accept Aphex's Soundcloud data dump as an album? I voted for it that way in P&J.

Does that make you mutter, under your breath, “Damn”? (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 3 January 2016 03:03 (eight years ago) link

Is it "AFx - Sc"? I don't know what that is.

Vote! In the ILM EOY Poll! (seandalai), Sunday, 3 January 2016 03:06 (eight years ago) link

If that is it, can it be a little clearer?
I submitted like so originally to the voice
Aphex Twin / User18081971- SoundCloud Data Dump ( https://soundcloud.com/user18081971 )

Does that make you mutter, under your breath, “Damn”? (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 3 January 2016 03:08 (eight years ago) link

Yeah that's it:

Is it OK to nominate the Aphex Twin soundcloud dump as one album? I've organised it and listen to it as such on iTunes.

If so, would suggest:

AFx - Sc

as the descriptor, since that's how a number of the uploaded tracks were labelled by RDJ (albeit a minority)

So basically that whole Carly Rae Jepsen album got nominated?

Shocking "Warm Blood" was not nominated being as it is one of the best songs on there.

Would like to make it clear that my vote for D.R.A.M.'s "Cha Cha" is for the OG Koji Kondo version and not whatever the hell it became after it got chewed up by the market (and Drake, butthatsnoneofmybusinesskermit.gif)

I've half-voted. I need to listen to some more of these albums, though, because I didn't bother nominating some of what was on my personal list due to the slim chance of any of them placing.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 3 January 2016 03:44 (eight years ago) link

I goofed on one of the 20 songs I just submitted--thought it had been nominated as a song but it was as an album. And two of the 20 I just added myself. Obviously, feel free to ignore those three votes; it's not like they're going to matter.

Flesh emoji (Sanpaku), Sunday, 3 January 2016 10:55 (eight years ago) link

gonna rep for a few things that are not on spotify to counter its monopoly over ilm's listening habits, and a reminder that there is so much good stuff that for whatever reason isn't on that platform

flava d is a garage/grime producer and associate of ppl like dj q; her debut album more love seemed a bit obvious at first in that it's basically garage refixes of (mostly) well-known r&b songs but it was sooooo listenable and after all garage refixes of r&b are still the best music ever regardless of how original they sound. i ended up listening to this a loooot over the summer. i see that she made it a free download on her bandcamp at the end of the year! i recommend it!

(fyi: t q d, nominated on the trax poll = royal-t, dj q and flava d. "day & night" is a fucking banger, both day mix and night mix)

couldn't figure out why sasha go hard's latest mixtape got so little love this year; maybe a sense that she'd missed her moment after taking time off to have a baby? but that feels like the reason it's her hardest, hungriest tape yet. "as long as i'm eating my daughter won't starve / she the main reason that i'm goin hard" she says it herself

dbn nyts' "shumaya" was one of the most joyous afrobeats bangers of the year, this was magnified by a peak ON A BOAT video

fatima yamaha's "what's a girl to do" was one of the most ubiquitous club tracks of the year, though it was originally released in 2004, and it definitely takes me back to a lot of the electrohouse being made around that time (esp ada's blondie but also feels perfectly right for now. "timeless", if that wasn't such a wanky adjective. i nominated the dj haus edit (not much of a change) as it was actually new in 2015 but the original, which is in fact on spotify, would certainly work in terms of year of impact. his migration-themed album imaginary lines is also excellent. if more of ilm went clubbing regularly "what's a girl to do" would prob be a dead cert for top 20.

miley cyrus's "1 sun" was the one keeper off that thing she did this year, earnest environmental electro-ballads aren't very common or usually very good but here we are, she sounds like this is the thing she most cares about in the world

pvc's "levitate". BASS SO HEAVY IT'S A PISSTAKE / BASS SO HEAVY MAKE THE RAVE SHAKE

lol how is rush's "attention" not even on youtube or soundcloud. one of (nigerian superproducer) young john's finest works imo, the way those fluttering synths spiral in on themselves halfway through!

(nb afrobeats comprised a massive part of my listening in 2015, endless amazing bangers and still the sense that i barely scratch the surface of it, if i continued i'd be here all day oh go on then you all need to hear sunkanmi's "singale", heavy-k's "givemeluv" (check them balearic guitars!) and dj kent's "don't let go" at least)

a few underrated things that are on the spotify playlists and are toooo gooooood to be overlooked

geko "baba" - afrobeats vibe via manchester kid of libyan heritage singing about the tribulations of interracial relationships in 2015 britain. indelible hook

honey cocaine's gift rap ep - sugarsweet x hardass rnbass by a cambodian-canadian female mc who calls herself that? so in my wheelhouse. "i'm feeling amazing / this is a rare occasion / young beautiful asian" <33333 "what kind of man got a heart as small as his dick?" <333333333 i am very attached to every song on the ep, i think they're all better than the actual big rnbass hits this year

janet jackson's album was mostly whatever for me (sadly) but "promise of you" is just spellbindingly good. it was a bonus track! they opted to put a truncated 58sec version of it on the actual album! i cannot fathom that logic.

thus ends my transmission from Avoiding Doing My Tax Return

lol i shortlisted this song in each of my three tranches of nominations and cut it every time. it is a v good song but it's not as if i'd have voted for it oh well. side-eye to everyone who chose to nominate 15 million young thug/future songs or every single kendrick lamar album track instead, i guess

yeah i first heard it a while ago (2014 i think) and i'm normally p rigorous with "year of release" for my own ballots but it feels pretty great in this particular short-attention-span era that a song can slowly and gradually gain more and more fans over an -eleven year period- before hitting critical mass and exploding

cher guevara (lex pretend), Sunday, 3 January 2016 11:52 (eight years ago) link

Heh, I currently make most of my income as a DJ and go clubbing regularly besides and I've never heard it before. I don't really play music like that and rarely go to nights that play music like that tho. It feels so far removed from my clubbing context.

oh damn i def meant to make that a link and didn't ugh. anyway long campaign list forcoming

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 January 2016 12:08 (eight years ago) link

- the heavy-k song lex mentioned is amazing and i'm probably voting for it too but my favorite production of his this year is "sweetie"; when those gentle post-disco guitars come in omfg

- i yelled about shura's "2shy" in the nominations thread as a really late discovery; the youtube comments compare it to a prince-written ballad which is the kind of stretch i'm super responsive to. vulnerability and phosphorescent synths that i'm here for forever, etc.

- another discovery from the nominations thread was mikael seifu's "brass" which is a pretty captivating vortex

- the tamia track that was mainly focused on in the rolling r&b thread was "sandwich and a soda," which is great, but i way prefer "stuck with me" as a single, just a perfect, shapeshifting ballad a la "i do take"

- the 1975's "ugh!" bc it's their scritti politti-est ode to surfaces so far

- a lot of k-pop worth voting for this year so i'm going for wonder girls flawless '80s pastiche "i feel you" but it could easily be lim kim's kinda delightfully fractured "awoo" or the gentle, absorbing swell of f(x)'s "4 walls"

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 January 2016 12:22 (eight years ago) link

The under-the-radar singles i'd recommend this year include:

Serebro - Pereputala https://youtu.be/IDixJgx8my4 Ya Tebya Ne Otdam nearly cracked the top 77 last year and this is even better. It's beautiful and unsettling in a way they have never really been before.

Vremya I Steklo - Imya 505: https://youtu.be/n3Go8ub9a1k Totally delightful Ukrainian dance-pop

Ariane Moffatt - Debout: https://youtu.be/prdc3aWnZg8 Lovely synthpop from Quebec that should appeal to anyone who likes Christine & The Queens, etc.

Albums include:

Nicole Dollanganger - Natural Born Losers: https://youtu.be/vS91Gxsqvcg Creepy Canadian indie-folk. First record released on Grimes' label.

Below The Sun - Envoy: https://youtu.be/WAbr38u9nGM Fabulous cosmic metal from Siberia.

Skriptonit - Dom S Normal'nimi Yavleniyami https://youtu.be/ROCmxSoqlHY Kazakh hip-hop possibly not an easy sell but this is probably the best Russian-language album of 2015.

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Sunday, 3 January 2016 12:41 (eight years ago) link

Heavy-K vote-splitting seems inevitable since the third track nominated, Umoya, (https://youtu.be/JqzJfqXYnto) is just as good as the two already mentioned. Sigh.
I guess I'll have to vote for all three.

Brad already repped three of the tracks I was going to campaign for (thanks!) so I'm just going to mention:

Barbara Morgenstern ft. Robert Lippok and Justus Köhncke - Übermorgen (it bounces, it rolls, it's basically a roller disco jam recast as sweet German electronica)
Loreen - Paper Light (Higher) (shambhala x summer jam perfection)

On the albums front, if you haven't heard Susanne Sundfør - Ten Love Songs yet, then do it now! And then vote for it!

xp i used to do the bizarre ritual of listening to as much nom'd music as possible before submitting the ballot as if cramming for a big exam, but i no longer see the point

to be sure, much of the music that i hear from the rollout and/or by browsing the noms/campaigning are great discoveries, but rarely are they *such* a revelation that i feel the need to slot them into my ballot right away. i have to spend real time with music to forge that kind of connection.

I woke up this morning with a sore head and the vague sense that I forgot to vote for sons of kemet and maybe also for kendrick(!) so it's fair to say that my ballot was not the most accurate representation of my listening year. If I hadn't been so busy lately I'd have dug in a bit more but tbh I don't know the names of a couple of the tracks I've loved the most this year, and there was an artist that according to spotify was in my top 3 most listened in 2015 and I literally didn't recognise the name at all, like I'd never heard of them

I can see the motivation to vote strategically in a political election, even though it's usually not my preference. Why even consider voting strategically for a message board poll about music, though?

Why even consider voting strategically for a message board poll about music, though?

I can see why. You can give a lot of points to records you love that most likely won't place or give these points to records you like a lot that actually have a shot at making it to the final list (meaning more people are likely to listen to them).
